I nearly made a big mistake Thursday evening, I almost decided not to watch the USC and Oregon State game. And all through the game I had the feeling USC was about to turn on the 'boost' and bury OSU. Wow. USC has some serious line issues on both sides of the ball. Jacquizz Rodgers played an amazing game but to see USC missing tackles like they did was surprising. Carroll and co. will straighten things out next season I`m sure but this season it may already be too late. They look like a team that could lose another Pac 10 game and even if they don`t, strength of schedule won`t be on their side by the end of the season. I overrated USC... a lot. They were soundly beaten at fundamentals and didn`t have the skill to razzle-dazzle, and they seemed to think they could. No doubt Oregon (U of)  smells blood this week, it doesn`t seem at this point that they`re outclassed by USC even as injured as they are.

Some people were saying Georgia just doesn`t look ready and boy were they right. Losing in the manner they did won`t be easy for voters to forget later in the season and Alabama put themselves in a position to be the SEC frontrunner. They have games later this season against LSU, Auburn and Mississippi. If they lose to anyone other than those three it`ll be another shocker. Each week Tennessee proves to me they`ve fallen further than I thought. Alabama should crush them. Kentucky is next on their list but it`s hard to imagine the Wildcats beating them this year unless they`re rendered near paralysis by the euphoria of this weeks win.

Oklahoma did what they needed to do. It`s comforting to see that. It wasn`t a `glamoùr game` but they took care of business while Florida and USC did not.  Now it`s off to Baylor to try to do it again and not look ahead to the showdown with Texas. Apparently the OU running game was pretty weak, however if the passing attack is working naturally the numbers are going to go down. Why force an aspect of your offense if you don`t have to...

I was pretty shocked by Navy`s victory over Wake Forest. Not a good loss (if there is ever such a thing).  Penn State is looking strong, at least in the Big 10. I saw Fresno St. and UCLA and the Bulldogs didn`t impress me in their victory. They seemed to be an equal match for the Bruins and that`s not where they want to be in their quest for large scale respect.

I`m starting to think the Alabama - LSU game might end up being the most important non `conference championship` game this year. Not a profound statement but how many people would have thought it would have been this important at the beginning of the season.

     My top 5 this week:

1: Oklahoma  Texas in two weeks, how big is that...

2: LSU   A proven commodity in the SEC the last few years, they get my nod

3: Alabama   Saban has them looking good, real good

4: Missouri   I`ll be watching the Mizz - Nebraska score closely next week.

5: Texas   They haven`t played great teams but they`ve looked strong against their overmatched opponents

(Penn State, South Florida and Florida are close behind. Florida loses by one point to Mississippi in a thriller, I don`t think they`ve fallen that far)

Until preview time that`s all,    Bones

Bones, It feels to me that South Florida is flying under the radar. Last year they kind of self destructed late in the season, I'd like to see them do better this year and play Texas in a bowl game. Clash of the beef cattle. The winner could "steak their claim". Another matchup I'd like to see in a bowl game strictly for their nick-names is Oregon Beavers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks.

Wow, good job! I agree with you, except that I'm still waiting before I predict who is number one. I will say that I am disappointed in the rankings placement of USC in the top ten after that god-awful game. Better teams had better games against better opponents and are ranked lower? They can't be serious! It's really upsetting to think that LSU and Alabama will play each other in a few weeks, and one of them will have to lose... and the same idiots that ranked that pathetic USC team over Florida, Georgia and Auburn will probably screw it up. I guess I should be happy that they haven't yet ranked Notre Dame in the top 5... but the season is still young.

Good points..
My top 5 looks a lot like yers, with the exception of UT and Mizzou switched. I figure Colt ???don???t call me a 15 year old in a 25 year body??? McCoy is causing some serious damage to opponents, and what with the Tigers having last week off.
Bottom line in the Big 12???the winner of Red River shootout takes Big 12 and ???presumably???goes to the BCS game. I don't think Mizzou can handle OU or texas. They can probably take the North again this year.
Too early to make these kind of calls? Sure, alot can happen in a week. Of course it???s too early. So I???ll go another step and say OU not only wins its first BCS Bowl since Y2K, but that it???s the big mamajama in Miami. Boomer!
5th time???s a charm.

DoIt4, just curious, what's up with all the question marks? My guess is that it is still early and anything can happen? Is that what it means? Is it? Is it? Is it? Good stuff though just the same.

UF lost to a terrible team in Ole Miss, they should be pretty low. Alot of teams can learn how to play UF by watching that game. UF will lose a couple more this year.

Thanks for the posts all. No norka, never considered Beavers and Gamecocks getting together in a football sense. 'Tis a natural though. I do however refer to the Notre Dame/Purdue matchup yearly as the 'Dames' v.s. the 'Dueds'.

All I can say is Bama looks pretty impressive. They are a young team and still has a lot of growing to do. They are the youngest team in the SEC and probably the NCAA. I am really impressed how the freshman have stepped up. If they can stay out of trouble we will see a pretty unstoppable team. Although in todays college football programs, no one is unstoppable. I think the major challenge for a coach with a winning team is to keep the players feet on the ground. I think when a team reads into the hype it can become a fog that blinds the path to greatness.

Hey sharky, I didn't realize 'Bama was quite that young, that makes them even more scary. Very true about the mental state though and youth makes a difference. I don't know how young LSU is, they seemed to lose several high profile people to the NFL draft so I assume they're young-ish. Can't wait for that game though.

And dp169, I don't know how terrible Mississippi is, they looked pretty good in the part of the Wake Forest game that I saw, they nearly won that one too. Wake Forest proved to be no world beaters but they're a pretty good team. I think UF might have been a little cocky and panicked for a while when they fell behind...? I don't know. I still think they might play a part in the grand design in the SEC.

UF lost that game to some poor decision making on the coach's side. It didn't help that Tebow played like he was on Benadryl or something. Ole Miss still played a great game. I think Coach Nutt will pull a few rabbits out of his hat like that every year, just like he did at Arkansas. Alabama and LSU are the two best teams in the league in my opinion. I can't wait for the game, but meanwhile LSU is not about to overlook Florida or any other SEC team. The SEC is fierce! I think that if LSU's freshman quarterback, Lee, can get comfortable and confident, LSU will be really hard to beat. They have a great runningback in Scott, an explosive return man, a couple of great receivers, and a massive and talented line on offense as well as defense. LSU's defensive line is a battering ram. I have to say "Thanks" to the LSU Tigers for playing so well, taking everyone's mind off of the catastrophes that were two massive hurricanes. It has been really tough for a lot of good people. I have neighbors who lost their homes to wind damage, and we are two hours drive to the coast! This football season has been a real spirit lifter. I also enjoy your blog, some really insightful comments.
