Predictably (and unfortunately), USC is the highest ranked one loss program in the country right now, coming in at 9th overall. This despite losing to an unranked Oregon State team. At the same time, one loss Georgia comes in at 11th even though they lost to the 8th ranked team in the country. Auburn at 13th with only a loss to LSU (currently ranked 3rd). So who's really the best one loss team in the country? It's early in the season and perhaps premature at this point to know for sure, but here's my picks. If you truly believe USC is the best one loss squad, please tell us why. If you think my picks suck, please enlighten me. Best 1-loss teams: 1. Auburn 2. Florida 3. Georgia 4. USC 5. Ohio State

I agree with those picks, good job

USC UGA FLA OSU Auburn

September 29, 2008  09:09 PM ET

USC will lose another by the end of the year, so it won't matter. Maybe two, they seem to think that just by showing up they can intimidate the other team into a loss

September 29, 2008  10:11 PM ET

I dunno... I agree that the three SEC teams could all beat Ohio State and USC, but I don't know who is the best among them. I was really surprised that Florida lost. Tim Tebow was not himself, and I think that he will prepare much better in the future. This was his "wake up call". Georgia and Auburn sometimes seem flat. They play tough but have not been able to consistently generate the excitement that the SEC demands. With that, I have to say that Florida is my pick for best one-loss team.

September 30, 2008  12:16 PM ET

SEC fans don't worry, any 1 loss team from our conference will have played several games against top 25 teams and probably a few against those in the top 10... Ga, FL, and Aub should all be able to jump USC in the next few weeks if they get wins over ranked oponents while USC plays unranked P10 foes... all LSU and Bama need to do is take care of business, all UF, UGa, and Aub need to do is take care of business and get a Penn St loss (assuming the B12 Champ will have 0-1 losses)

September 30, 2008  05:26 PM ET

FSU WOOT!!!

no, def not one of the best, if the people the massecared were teams like Oklahoma and Florida then i'd say they would be the no 1 team with one loss...but alas, twas against worthless no good opponents that we gained false confidence and got murdered. WHo knows the beat CU pretty well, and if the beat Miami badly then they could be on eof the better 1 oss teams...one never knows till the season is over.

Why dont u explain to us how osu losing to usc on the road without wells, with boeckman.Isnt the best one loss..look waht rogers did to usc. imagine what wells would have done.osu had a td and a play to the 3 yrd line called back on questionable pen. This game shoulda ben 14-0 osu after 1..osu lost to fl 41-14.that was used to declare osu not a top team..ga loss was worse than osu fl beatdown for starters its at home.why isnt ga declared unworthy of top 10? Fl lost to a really avg ole miss team at HOME.Everyone declared fl offense explosive.fl doesnt look good at all....Why is it Fl and USC lose to unranked teams and its excused by the media. Why is OSU blasted for losing to top teams but its ok for teams to lose to unranked...OSU hasent lost to an unranked in 5 years..fl has lost 6 times in that span. Why does okl who has been blown out of every bcs game by evry conf by larger margins than osu.not get held accountable like osu..they are also 1-2 in nc games.and they lost to wv by 50 points 5 games ago!! i dont hear any anxiety about choklahoma getting to the nc game. And dont give me the osu cant win against good teams{wich is better than cant win vs bad teams}tress is 9-6 vs top 5 teams 28-11 vs top 25..I have to wait 45 minutes into any cfb highlight show to watch the most talented freshman qb maybe ever average 12 yards a carry, running over a lb, keeping eyes downfield and making big throws.Running like a deer,he looks like a man among boys when he is the 19 year old among 22 yr olds, why do i wait? because no one wants to look at osu come back.they are maybe completely unstopable now. with wells back how do u stop the two?....Tell me why no one cares if choklahoma gets in? ...OSU and Pryor seem to be feeding off of this..good thing.no one wil stop an angry pryor or wells..maybe we should rethink whats really better a coach who loses a few big games vs great teams..or coaches who routinely choke to 40 point underdogs...

September 30, 2008  07:35 PM ET

First, I've watched all of Ohio State's games this year and I doubt many people would agree with you that OSU is the best 1-loss team in the land. They looked horrible against lowly Ohio, and could have easily lost that game. It doesn't matter that Beanie was hurt when USC demolished them, or that Tressel played Boekman instead of Pryor. Hindsight is 20/20 but those are poor arguments for a higher ranking. Second, Oklahoma hasn't lost a game yet so there's nothing to punish them for in the polls (we're talking about this year remember...and one loss teams as opposed to undefeated squads). Finally, I agree that USC got off easy for their loss and should have fallen well below 9th. I peg them around 15th. In conclusion, and in case you haven't noticed, I can't tell you why OSU should be the highest ranked 1-loss team because they shouldn't. What reasoning puts them above USC, who is inferior to Auburn, Florida and Georgia?

September 30, 2008  08:44 PM ET

so u hold osu accountable for the ohio game? what about auburn beating an awfull miss st team 3-2? what about ga beating sc 14-7.....even bama had a 13 point win vs tulane..osu was 12 points over ohio WITHOUT there best player{cfb best player}..and fl doesnt look as good as the team that had 600 yards offense vs michigan{mich had 93 yrds vs osu}....so u look past auburns awfull game vs miss st who is awfull{see la tech game} u see past ga lackluster win against a below avg sc team..and a 31 point unanswered 1st half GOOD fb teams dont give up 31 in a half at home to a dog.....I can live with usc being ahead of osu...even though the they didnt get punished as bad as osu..and dont forget psu waxed ore st....scored 35 pts in the first half.....still usc beat osu....i can even live with ga....even though i dont beleive a GOOD team would have done that let alon a great one. but auburn and fl have no business ahead of osu. and unlike the biased ap voters the coaches who i put a little more judgement cred than sportswriters have auburn and fl behind osu......oh and troy scored more points on LSU GA and FL than they did on osu.....How can u judge OSU poorly for the 12 point win over ohio without wells but not hold auburn for a 1 point win vs miss st? and even bam,a for a 13 pt win vs tulane.....It sounds like you have a double standard....or as i call it SEC derangement Syndrome...Osu will have 3 or 4 more ranked games to prove them selves. be sure and watch pryor and wells vs wisc...and then u tell me how in the heck ANY defense is supposed to stop it? And pryors passes..most are where ONLY hisreciever can get it....Ive been watching fb for 34 years and ive never seen a qb with the package pryor has..Ive broke every osu game down on film 4 times..his vision accuracy speed decision on throws and most important that competative fire.Pryor avg 9 yards a play vs usc in the first half. i have compared tress decision to play boeckman in the 3rd to treason...I know most people havent seen him enough do know but im telling u now he is way better than the hype.....It will be clear to u too real soon...If you start donig something about your SDS....

September 30, 2008  11:20 PM ET

Wolfwolfwolf: Ohio State fans needs to realize that their team needs to win a BIG game once in a while outside of your conference to be considered good, much less great. 2 bad losses to the SEC and a 32 point embarrassment to USC is NOT the way to gain favor among the voters. YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. So Pryor and Beanie come in a put some points on the score board. You still need to stop USC from scoring and OSU showed no signs of being able to do that... NONE. Regardless, Pete Carroll can out coach Jim Tressel any day of the week.

Sorry www, I've got to agree with Calm, no doubt Ohio State is a good team but the rest of the college football world has every right to question their place among the elite this year. You can't excuse a loss due to injuries, they're a part of the game. The Buckeyes didn't automatically ensure themselves a seat in the top by losing the last two championship games badly. Many people believed they didn't deserve a shot at the title last year and they seemed to be proven right in my eyes. How many years do you give someone a free pass even if they are the best in their conference. Hey, I'm an Oklahoma fan and I'll admit they were overhyped a couple of times over the last few years... result? Losses in bowl games. Georgia looks like they were overhyped this year, it happens. Ohio State will be back, I'll be happy to rank them highly when they deserve it. If they surprise everyone this year or whenever, celebrate... you were right, just don't expect others to see your team with the same rose coloured glasses that you're wearing.

1. GA [FOR SURE, GREAT 2ND HALF WHEN THEY COULD HAVE FOLDED] 2.FLA [THEY PLAYED LAZY AGAINST OLE MISS--TRIED TO WIN WITHOUT WORKING FOR IT--BET THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN] 3.USC 4. OHIO ST.[ THE NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION, COULD POSSIBLY BEAT USC NOW.] 5.AUBURN [MAYBE, WHY 5? GOT TO HAVE SOME CONSTANT OFFENSE AND SOON. IF THEY DON'T IMPROVE TROUBLE DOWN THE ROAD.]

October 1, 2008  08:50 AM ET

All I can say is that this writer has been watching a different Auburn than I have. They have been consistently awful.

October 1, 2008  08:50 AM ET

And WWW, I think you need therapy. Seriously.

October 1, 2008  10:39 AM ET

wolfwolfwolf, i can seriously see osu having an explosive offense NEXT year, of course they will have lost a lot of defensive horses(lurinaitis, jenkins, freeman) but this year pryor is a FRESHMAN, the sky is the limit but he is not going to wow us all year long as he will inevitably make freshman miscues. As for the rest i see uga as the best 1 loss team. think they simply thought that the funeral possesion alone was going to scare of my tide. still not sold on lsu so i think auburn has to be the worst peforming of the 1 loss teams mentioned. fl did not have that bad of a loss, orgeron did some recruiting down at ole miss, and now they have a pretty good coach at getting the most out of the talent he has. USC got knocked in the mouth and didn't know what to think. 1.uga2.fl3.usc4.osu5.auburn

The jury is still out for me with this one, USC lost to a team that will probably end the season at .500 but I guarantee USC will win the PAC-10 because the PAC-10 sux!!

As for Ohio State, lol, they don't even deserve an explanation.

Auburn lost to a very good LSU team but showed that they didn't have the knockout power that a BCS team needs.

Georgia gave up 21 points to Georgia Southern!! Georgia Southern!! That's one step above SOME Highschool football teams. If you look back at my picks, I predicted Alabama to beat, not upset Georgia.

Florida deserved to lose that game against Ole Miss because of the poor playcalling, turnovers and lack of energy. But!! I think that Florida is still a very tough dangerous team to have to deal with and now they have Percy Harvin to help compliment Teebow.

My 1 loss picks

1. Florida
2. USC
3. Auburn
4. Georgia
5. Wisconsin

But why? That is exactly what the rankings are showing. He posed an arguement as to why it is wrong. You just restate it as if it is obviously right?

Please Explain Norka, we are listening.

Wolf- The problem is consistancy. Ohio State is CONSISTANTLY getting blown out by EVERY highly ranked non-conference team they have played the past three seasons. The best non Big 10 team that they have beaten in recent memory is a rebuilding UT team in the 2006 opener (it was even Colt's first ever start).

All Ohio State has to do is at least hang with a Top 10 non Big 10 team. Lose by less than a touchdown and y'all will probably have people start paying attention to you again.

October 1, 2008  12:46 PM ET

iVE SAID FOR THREE WEEKS..ALL OSU HAS TO DO IS BEAT WISCY, PURDUE, mICH ST,ILL, and Penn st...i know in ure minds thats easy...But they will have likely played 4 or 5 top 25 teams.....I sit back and laugh like i did last year...Just wait for the pretenders meyer carol stoops miles and saban, to lose to nobodys..and they never let me down..last week was a good start..my only issue was fl and auburn ahead of osu......I keep hearing people say pryor will make a mistake..NOBODY thats played against him or the people around him arent at all concerned...when tress says hes not worried about a fresh making mistakes thats him saying he beleives he has something beyond special..he has 6td passes and 1 int wich was a hail mary at half..so 6 td 0 int..he hasnt fumbled...in a few weeks he will be recognized as the most exciting player in cfb..........and not a single response addresed why it is somehow better in all your minds to lose to ole miss, la tech, ore st, ..than it is to lose to #1 or #2......and critisize osu for a close game with ohio...but not a peep abpoiut a 13 point tulane win for bama...or a auburn 3-2 game vs miss st..or a ga 14-7 game vs sc.....so u all think its ok for a team to to lay an egg once in a while as long as that teams not osu......like i said the COACHES got it right with aub and fl behind the bucks.....

October 1, 2008  01:31 PM ET

I agree, but I put Florida ahead of Auburn ONLY because they haven't figured out how to play offense yet. When they get it down they'll be dangerous because they have a dominant defense.
