Lampard on England midfield
Frank Lampard has admitted that he and Steven Gerrard have not played to their full potential in England's midfield.
But, ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan, he said there is too much focus on their partnership.
"We both want to be at our best for England and will probably say that, for the last couple of years, we haven't done that," said Lampard.
"Everyone is trying to find the solution but it's not just me and Steven Gerrard, it's the whole team."
The debate over whether the duo can play together in central midfield was reopened when England impressively beat Croatia 4-1 with Lampard and Gareth Barry in midfield and Gerrard missing out through injury.
Chelsea's Lampard and Gerrard, of Liverpool, could be given another chance to show they can play together against Kazakhstan before the team travel to play Belarus on 15 October.
Can Gerrard and Lampard play together in midfield? The frustration over the way the pair have struggled to combine for England has been compounded by some spectacular form for their respective clubs.
"My view is that it is very important to talk about the team," added Lampard. "We look into the wrong issues. It's not about individuals.
"If you look to much into things you can create your own problems. What we want is to win the game.
"There are times with any partnership when it works on the pitch and when it doesn't," added Lampard.
"We are breaking it down much too much at the moment. What's important is getting results and not trying to find issues with certain players.
It's never wise to count Steven Gerrard out early. Just wait and see what he does For England.
"Me and Steven get on very well off the pitch and I think we get on well on the pitch but we want to improve as we haven't done what we could do in the last couple of years.
"Steven and hopefully myself have been playing at a high level for our clubs and people expect the same thing playing for England but that's not necessarily always going to happen.
