If there was a team to bring you heartache year after year it is the Chicago Cubs.  At the start of the season they were favored to go all the way by almost everyone.  They started off a little shakey and managed to heat up at the right time to get into the playoffs.  It was Soriano playing like hot garbage and then Derek Lee losing all his power to drive the ball out of the park and finally pitchers going haywire and breaking down.  Even through all of that they were favored to go into the playoffs and competing for the WS trophy.  All it took was a series in October to help Cubs fans realize that they did it to us again.  They made us lift our spirits collectively with their 97 win record that this was going to be different and it only ended up being the same.

What does this team need to do to play at a competitive level?  How can the worst team in the playoffs beat us AGAIN!  That is two western division teams beating us in consecutive years.  This was truly an embarrasment for Chicago Cubs fans.  I don't see how this team can get over the hump come October.  Next year is already starting out great with Harden seeking out advice from a specialist regarding his elbow.

Can Cub fans go through another tease of a season next year only to be ashamed in October?  What is Hendry going to do this offseason to make this team a guaranteed WS participant?  Hendry did a nice job targeting players that would help us in the long run.  I am not sure that Sam Zell will allow there to be anymore spending.  Can Fukudome stop spinning for a second to swing at a good pitch next year?  Where is the little Matsui and Ichiro mixed player we were expecting?

There will be a lot to think about until next year, but I'll guarantee you that I won't be holding my breathe to find out what is going to happen.  Good luck to the organization and good luck Mark Cuban.  Next year will be just that next year for this team.  Im not waiting around for results till then.

I wont be holding my breathe either...I decided I really wont get excited unless the Cubs make it past the first round, its just frustrating is what it is.

The Redsox went 85 yrs before they finally won a world series again. But the difference is that they had good teams on a regualr basis and almost won the ws at least on one occasion that I remember during my chlidhood. I think I remember Carelton Fisk homering off the left field foul pole and then not winning the series after all. I'll keep on cheering for the Cubbies and some day they will win the world series. To be honest I thought too much went wrong as the season winded down that even the no-hitter from the Zambrano didn't have the same meaning as if he'd of had to pitch in Houston. There was no real momentum going into the post season. The Cubbies just weren't hot. I didn't have the expectations that I had in '84. I'm dissapointed for my Cubbies, but I believe the best is yet to come. I'm not ready to throw the towel in yet. I'm ready for 2009. Lets go Cubbies!

There may have been a bunch of things going wrong for this team, but it was their ability to get out of it that was promising. While they did start a tail spin late august and early september they were able to turn that around and pull away from the other teams in their division. Why they weren't able to win a game is what is troubling. I may have felt better if they lost in a game five, but they just repeated what happened last season.

I think its just a matter of just having your clutch players getting hot at the right time or else being able to get the clutch hits when they are needed the most. It all boils down to being able to perform at a top level when the pressure it on. Curse or no curse the cubbies have this thing hanging over them and they need to break it once and for all. The team that breaks the circle of failures will go down in history and that day will come. Its a mental thing. The only thing required to be good losers is pratice and the cubbies sure have had enough of that. But it all starts in the head.
