This is what the yankees 2009 team should look like

first the yankees let jason giambi, andy pettite, ponson, pudge, and pavano leave for free agency.

they resign abreu and musinna (unless he retires) unless they want rediculous contracts. then the sign a nuber of free agents including C.C Sabathia, AJ Burnett, Manny Ramirez, and Mark Texeira.

then they trade Matsui, and Nady for minor league prospects. then the yankees trade Robinson Cano and Melky for Nate McClouth.

Pitching Rotation

  1. CC Sabathia
  2. Wang
  3. Burnett
  4. Joba
  5. Musinna

i think this rotation would be very effective even if (or when) burnett gets injured we could have phil huges or alfredo aceves fill in.

my bad that i wrote they. I was seeing if my name would pop up. It's a good team you got but I dont think that the Yankees would do that with all the remaining money. Look at all that money that they let go away but all this money is going to waste for three hitters. Joba will stay in the bullpen. What the Yankkes have to do is not get Manny or Texeira. OK, think about it, Ransom playing a full season. No way that will happen. Cano sucks like cfrazy but he's a better full season hitter. Ransom just had a couple of at-bats and did well. But the question is can he do that for a full season. Manny cannot bat last because he's a number five hitter in that lineup. The rotation is fine with me and I agree with you there but the bullpen is going to look like crap. I dont think baqtting Damon last in the lineup will help the team win. Damon will leavde in a year so we want a good season so other teams will pay him and he can get thye hell out of New York. The Yankees are going to win the World Series with the lineup and pitching staff you put up there. Steinbrenner will pay these guys but the question is will the Yankees go over the salary with these new million dollar stars and the big re-sign of Mike Mussina. I dont see Nady in that lineup. What are you going to do, trade him with former teammate Nate McLouth so he can go back to Pittsburgh and play for a lousy team that will once again fail to make the playoffs whether they have Nady or not. Look, gthe Yankees need him because he provides power maybe off the bench or he can bat last and our whole lineup can set the record for homers by a team with like 350 homers because each of them will hit 30 homers. All the people you said are leaving are leaving but I think Moose will leave as well because the Yankees wont want to pay them with all that extra money they need for all those free agents. They will pass the salary cap and have to release a lot of people which will destroy the organization and the Yankees will be doomed but it wiil be a good year.

October 9, 2008  06:03 PM ET

did you even read my blog? i dont have manny batting last. also there is no salary cap in baseball! plus the yankees income is projected to increase from 400 mil to about 700 mil with the new stadium so they could easily pay for all of this.

God I hope we don't do what you suggest! And why the hell are a some Yankee fans blaming Cano for our "Inevitable" step-back year. You want scape goats how about Jason Giambi? How about Matsui being out and Posada being out? Unless you have an equally talented younger player in mind you can't even think about trading Robbie! There's also no way Damon is going to bat ninth and Abreu sixth!

I hope we keep Damon in left and batting lead off.
Jeter at short in the two hole.
Either resign Abreu and trade Matsui, or keep Matsui and let Abreu walk. One of them bats third.
In the four hole I'm putting Mark Texeira as well as at first.
Batting five and playing Third A-Rod.
Sixth and right belong to Nady.
Seventh and Cathing Posada.
Eighth and second is Cano.
Batting ninth and playing center is Gardner/Cabrera and eventually Jackson.

As for the rotation, CC (I hope), Wang, young starter we pick up in a trade, Pettitte (I think he'll be back at a discount), and Mussina (I also think he'll be back for 2-3 more years). As insurance we have Hughes (starts the year as a long man), and Chamberlain (starts the year as a middle man/set-up man).

I'm swapping the 20 that would have gone to Giambi and giving it to CC. I think Pettitte and Mussina and both be had for 10 a piece. That saves roughly 8 over what they made last year. If Abreu comes back at 12-14 that's 2 I save there and by dumping Matsui I gain another 12, that's 14. Otherwise it's a savings on 16 for not signing Abreu. With Pavano's 10, that's 24. Throw in The rest of the dead deals (Farnsworth, Hawkins, I-Rod, etc.) and that leaves me more than enough to offer Texeira a deal in the 14-16 mill range.

My bullben goes, Rivera, Chamberlain, Hughes, Melancon, Bruney, Coke, and whoever survives not being traded.

Now I have Matsui, Kennedy, Veres, Ramirez, Sanchez, Horne, and a host of others to deal for a young impact starter and depth among minor league position players.

By signing CC and Texeira I lose my first and second round picks. I don't see the Yanks picking up Giambi's option or offering him arbitration so I'll lose my compensation there. Abreu will net a first and comp pick and he won't accept arbitration. So I save money, keep my core intact, build around younger players, and strengthen my rotation.

October 11, 2008  06:20 PM ET

dude did i ever blame cano for anything? also nate mcclouth is an eaqually talented young player(he's actually better) and in this lineup where else do you want me to bat abreu and damon. its hard to make a realistic lineup with an all star team. one last thought AROD BATTING 5th. are you nuts! you would have the best hitter in the world bat 5th!

October 12, 2008  01:12 AM ET

A-Rod fails way to often in pressure situations. Moving him one spot down in the order will relieve some of that pressure and he's still protected by a very good hitter. Torre used to bat A-Rod lower than that in the order, and in the playoff's no less. McClouth had a good year but he's not worth Robbie. One the Pirates wouldn't make this trade to begin with (Cano makes at least six times what Nate makes), two, they need him desperately at the moment (at least until McCutchen sticks), and three it doesn't make sense for them to move him. For us it doesn't make sense because one, we have a left handed lead off hitter already, two we don't deperately need a center fielder, and three who plays second? A 33 year old career minor leaguer? Over Robbie! No way.

Manny being Manny for four years and $100 million isn't worth it. I'm not about to give up on Melky either. At 24 years old he's three years younger than Nate McClouth and has comparable numbers (NM .261/.338/.461, MC .268/.329/.374, and RC's .303/.335/.468). Also given that Nate didn't have his breakout year until this one at 26, Melky still has a chance. We also have Gardner, Christian, and Jackson on the way. We can get by with what we have. It wasn't our CF's that killed us but not hitting with RISP and having to rely on Ponson/Rasner/Pavano for 40 plus starts.

One final note A-rod is not Pujols. Pujols is the best hitter in the world.

i know that there are some arguments on whether to trade people sign all these people. but the bottom line is this team would easily dominate the mlb

October 12, 2008  02:33 PM ET

The same could've been said for the team's that we fielded from 2002-2008. And you know what, they didn't! The point is to get better across the board, save money, build up the farm system, and get younger. I love Cash for that. We got $80 plus million coming off the books, there is no need to throw it back on players. If we can get Tex and CC, save $40 along the way, pick up picks we are going to lose by signing these guys, and possibly get a good starter in a trade. Then we are far ahead of the game.

I'd love to see us make a run at Felix Hernandez (though there is no way Seattle moves him yet), Zack Greinke (a possibility), or Matt Cain (another possibility).

1 Sabathia
2 Wang
3 Greinke/Cain
4 Pettitte (he'll want to pitch in the first year of the New Stadium)
5 Mussina (With an upgrade in offense/defense in Tex, a true number 1 in Sabathia, and a young horse at 3, 300 seems like a possibility).

6th man is Hughes/Chamberlain.

At $160 million I like that team. The hard part is who do you keep Matsui or Abreu. Neither one of them can field, so you have to have them DH. I guess it comes down to draft picks for Abreu or what you can get in a trade for Matsui. SF was hot for Matsui once, maybe a package that starts with Matsui and Kennedy can intice them to part with Cain. Another issue is if you commit to DH'ing Abreu for at least three more years and Tex at first for 4-5, what do you do with Posada if he can't catch?

October 12, 2008  08:00 PM ET

i agree that rotation/team would be sick to. there is many different ways the yankees could get better.

one other point why are you so afraid of money its not like the yankees are going to run out.

October 12, 2008  08:14 PM ET

You wish...

October 13, 2008  01:08 AM ET

I'm not afraid of it, I just want us to spend it wiser. I'm tired of seeing one dimensional players get $20 plus million. I'd rather see the Yanks invest $5 million in a 16-21 year old potential stud than multimillions on another Giambi or Pavano. Besides that I'm also tired of hearing how we buy championships and how big our payroll is.

Look around the game as well. The best teams are the ones that have ben built from within without major free agents. The Rockies (if only they could develope some pitching), Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Devil Rays, A's (if they could ever find the money to keep their players), and even that crew up in Mass. People tend to relate better to home grown guys. Think Munson in the 70's, Mattingly in the 80's, and Jeter now. We love them cause their our guys.

Sorry for typing 'o' I accidently hit the SUBMIT button. Here's my comment on your team:

It sucks.

First things first... Yankees should stay far, far, far away from AJ Burnett. They really should. He's another Carl Pavano waiting to happen. No thanks to Burnett. Next, Abreu should also not be re-signed by the Yankees. He's been a good number three hitter but the guy's defense is slipping; he doesn't like running into the wall in Right field. Next thing is that you have way too many guys in the bull pen.

I wouldn't trade Cano but I would leave Ransom on the bench. Ransom is a good utility infielder. McClout would be nice to have on the team. And, no thanks to Manny. Where's Matsui going to play? Here's my team for next season:

Line Up (in order):

LF Johnny Damon
SS Derek Jeter
CF Nate McClouth
3B Alex Rodriguez
1B Mark Teixieria
C Jorge Posada
DH Hidek Matsui
2B Robinson Cano
RF Xavier Nady

Starting Rotation:
CC Sabathia
Chien-Ming Wang
Derek Lowe
Phil Hughes
Joba Chamberlain

Bull Pen:
Mariano Rivera
Phil Coke
Damaso Marte
Brian Burney
Jose Veras
Edwar Ramierez
Darrel Rasner (Long man)

Bench:
OF Brett Gardern
U Cody Ransom
C Jose Molina
1B Juan Miranda

thats so different u changed 4 things. they both still have the same core

Well at least the three of us our somewhat on the same page J.R. McClouth isn't going anywhere yet and would you really want to give up valuable trade pieces for him over a young starter? Lowe hates NY, he prefers Boston. Marte is only coming back if he takes a serious paycut (you don't need two lefties for middle relief duties, so Marte becomes the lefty specialist and at $6 million that's too much to pay him). Rasner is so far off the depth chart that it's likely he's done in Pinstripes (Aceves, Sanchez, Giese, Marquez, Horne, Wright, Kennedy, etc.).

Miranda is going to have a hell of a time trying to beat out Betamit. Wilson sucks as a hitter, but his versatility gives him an overwhelming edge. Miranda sticks if we don't sign Tex and go with a platoon at first instead. If we get Tex (28 years old, as opposed to Miranda at 25), it's not like there's a major trade off in age. The more I think about it, Miranda is starting to look good in SF Brown and Orange (Cain just turned 24).
