I know that everybody has been hatin' on the BCS lately. I just shake my head no. This is because I am a fan of a school that doesn't have a good enough rep' for a playoff system. Maryland has always been, if not good, a very decent team. But we don't get credit for it.

Example: Maryland NCAAB last season. 18-14 regular season. No Big Dance. Winthrop is in a mediocre conference and they make it close to every year because they win the division. Maryland is in the ACC. UNC, Duke, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech. They all got in, Maryland didn't. I sat and watch while UNC, Duke, Miami, Clemson, and VT fans were cheering their teams on. What I went through is being snubbed. Most of you know how it feels to bbe left out or picked last, I know this because you are on FanNation instead of playing sports. This is how many NCAAB fans feel. Like Florida and Ohio St. fans in the same sport. Maryland, Florida and Ohio St. are all thinking, "I did that for nothing? I got a big trophy (except for Ohio St.) but I don't get any respect?" If UNC was 18-14, they would get in because they are UNC.

This is why I love the BCS. Everybody that deserves it gets to be the Champion for that night. Granted teams like Northwestern and South Carolina finished 6-6 and still didn't make a bowl, but other 6-6 teams did (including Maryland). Every one gets a chance.

If the BCS went to a playoff system, many would feel snubbed. And I can't take that for two straight seasons.

So non-Top 10 team fans, ask yourself, do you really want to have your team not make a Bowl game because the stubborn top 10 teams want to determine whom the real National Champion is?

Well Put, NCAA FBS (Div. 1-A) is the greatest sport in the world BECAUSE of their post season, it is like none other.

YES!

I have a different criticism on the BCS selection - the at large teams.

In 2007 fore example, there were 3 at large teams from the major 6 conferences. Not 1 finished in the top 2 of their conference. Good teams that did finish in the top 2 of their conference (like Missouri) were left out.

...not a criticism of the bowl system, a criticism aimed directly at those who select the teams, taking teams that finished 3rd in their conference and leaving out teams that finished 2nd because they lost recently (frequently the title game).

In 2007 BC lost the ACC Championship, but Clemson and Virginia advanced without even playing, therefore Clemson was chick fila and UVA was Gator, while BC was Champs Sports.

#3 is exactly right. Not only that, but take last year for instance... when the Rose took 9-3 Illinois versus say, a Georgia/Oklahoma/WVU to play USC. As a Big Ten homer I understand tradition, but I'd much rather see a great game. Another example? Kansas being selected over Missouri. I like both programs, but Missouri won the head to head, and were still #6 in the final BCS rankings despite losing to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game. They should have been selected... not that Kansas didn't make for a good opponent versus Virginia Tech.

the BCS is absolutely terrible. Does anyone really get excited to watch the Insight Bowl, or Motor City Bowl, or any other crummy bowl. Heck, other than the Rose Bowl and BCS Title game, they can't even sell out the other BCS Bowls. Imagine the excitement (and money) that a playoff would create. I'm really disappointed that they couldn't at least look into a (plus 1) formula to determine the champion. I'm not saying we need a 16 team playoff, but what about 8, or veen 4. Let Chic Fil-A keep their bowls, I for one, won't be watching.

October 12, 2008  03:58 PM ET

If your team was in those bowls, you'd get VERY excited.

Agreed.

I enjoy watching every bowl a team from my favorites conference plays in, a team from my home state plays in, a team that interests me plays in, as well as the top match ups.

If I were to disect your comment, I could find a handfull (perhaps nore) of reasons in this statement alone it is not in NCAAF's interest to introduce a playoff - but that's a blog, not a comment.

a playoff system would allow for there to be other lesser bowls just like there are now. Basically it would be the same just better because there are no controversies, just good teams trying to be #1. While teams like Maryland can still have their chick-fil-a or humanitarian bowls! SCREW THE BCS!

October 13, 2008  05:37 PM ET

You people don't realize how they select the bowl teams. It is conference #1's for the big bowls, then the standings in the conferences determine which bowl. (with exception to at large teams).

Good blog!

The problem with the BCS is that a deserving team might get snubbed, e.g. 2003 USC & 2004 Auburn. The BCS has gotten lucky for the most part, but it will not always be as lucky. Penn St. might get screwed this year, and I would hate to see that b/c I love Joe Pa.

I guess having one team being snubbed is better than many teams being snubbed year after year.

Actually that's not how it's done. Bowls Choose from the conference with the contract who they want to play in their game. Example, in 2007 ACC runner up Boston College fell all the way to the last pick, The Emerald Bowl, because of their small following and fan base.

October 14, 2008  07:51 PM ET

True, but there are more than one bowl per conference.

Missed the mark by a mile ! Why is it thought that if there was a play-off System put into effect for the bcs that all of the minor bowl games would cease to exist ? The BCS system as it is now is nothing more than a boys club for Eastern Upper Society NCA College football teams. ( the We're better than anyone Leagues ) . Sure they've made a few mistakes by throwing out a few bones to the Upper Western leagues , and they've had to include some schools from the east that just aren't in their class - but it is a well known fact that it is believed that those schools can't play ball with the Upper eschelon schools of the east. Their present system is so flawed they can't even follow their own rules - it doesn't matter if you're in the top ten BCS teams if you're a non-bcs school - only one non-bcs school is allowed a bcs bowl game in any given year. This is because of the ever so flawed system of conference auto-bids. Why should a school with a poor record be auto-bidded into a BCS bowl game because it wins it's conference? Wouldn't it be a better system if a conference with an auto-bid that didn't have a winner with a good enough record - it Loses that auto-bid? It's easy to say "they can't compete with us " if they're never allowed to play against you. In two of the last three years it has been proven that the so called " they can't compete with us "schools...... CAN.
If a play-off was to be put into effect , it could actually bring in more revenue then the current system , be played in the same time frame as the current system , and produce an indisputable Champion. All the other bowl games could still be played as normal .
16 team playoff - the top 16 teams of the BCS polls - stating the last week of november and finishing the first week of Janruary with a one week break between the semi-final game and the final. Playoff would be played as a seeded tourney. team 1 vs 16 - 2 vs 15 and so on. Games would be played on nuetral fields preselected before the season starts .
