The year was 1988. For much of my life, the Blazers had been a team I might wear clothing for, see on TV or hear on the radio, but they did not mean much to me. They hired a local guy as coach named Rick Adelman. It didn't mean much to me. Fast forward to Spring of 1990. I was in Pendleton, Oregon attending community college. I had made friends with a number of cowboy types from my Animal Science classes, and I was hanging out at their apartment. I was sort of bored, and started watching what they had on TV. What they had, was the first round of the playoffs, and I was hooked. I watched those Blazers all the way through the playoffs, even through their finals loss to the Pistons. I loved the players, I loved the style of play, they were a fun team to watch. For the next five years, my passion for the Blazers equalled my passion for the Ducks. It faded a bit when they fired Adelman, and faded more when they became a team of overpaid underachievers, and faded even more when they became the Jailblazers, but I always dreamed of a team that I could put my hope in like those Blazers of my college days. Portland, and the Blazer Diaspora, we have that team again. I have a feeling that this year, even though the experts say they are "too young" and "inexperienced", we could have another magical run like 1990, the year I became a Blazer fan. Buck Williams (my favorite), Porter, Kersey, Drexler, and of course Duckworth will always rank as the team that made me a Blazers fan, and be special for that reason, but these new Blazers....I just have a feeling about them.....in the future yes, but perhaps this year as well.
