It was a fun and powerful weekend in college football that saw a lot of change in the national pecking order.

Time for me to eat some crow. I have to admit that I choked on a few this week. LOL, actually I did no better than a coin toss as I went 4-4. For those keeping score, that brings the total to 24-7. Gee, I hope I haven't lost any of my cred.

OK, now time to re-examine some of my flawed logic and how I saw the games.

SOUTH CAROLINA over KENTUCKY - Kentucky played well at times in this game, but once again repeatedly blasted their lower appendages with their own weapon. SC on the other hand, managed to overcome a bad offensive perfomance in the first half and play very well in the second. Once again the Ball Coach swaps QBs faster than he can fling his visor. This time he found the man with the hot hand. Meanwhile, the Gamecock defense continues to look stronger and stronger.  I think that anyone that has SC remaining on their schedule should not consider them an easy "W".  As long as they continue playing good D, they have a chance in any game.

MISS STATE over VANDERBILT - My Dores let me me down. They have been living dangerously all season by spotting teams the lead and making dramatic comebacks. Unfortunately, this time they ran into a good defense that slammed the door on them. I think Johnson should have made the QB swap earlier, but it might not have made any difference in the end. In addition,  the Bulldog offense showed some signs of life as they got the running game going with Dixon. Both teams might yet have something to say about the East/West races.

GEORGIA over TENNESSEE - This went about as I expected. Georgia's defense pretty much throttled the Vols helpless offense, although the freshman Stephens did show a real improvement at the QB position. But with no running game (they finished with 1 yard net rushing), the Vols became one dimensional and Stephens got a rude welcome to the SEC.  Stafford put up over 300 yards but also had 2 picks. The Georgia offensive line continues to be an issue for the Dawgs and they are really going to have to step up before they meet the Gators.

ARKANSAS over AUBURN - I was right in thinking that AU was ripe for the upset. I don't care what anyone says, the circus surrounding their program this week has to have had a negative effect on the players. I didn't get to watch the game personally (I wasn't shelling out that kind of money for that kind of game), but having seen Arkansas a couple of times, it is hard to imagine that their defense would hold Auburn to just 193-yards of net offense. And only 4 of 15 in third down conversions. The most pitiful and telling part is the 56-yards of net rushing on 33 attempts (an average of 1.7 per rush).  I also said that this defense has been put into too many bad situations and that they are getting tired mentally and physically.

A question I would love to ask Tuberville: what in all-that-is-holy-in-college-football were you thinking having Burns pass 3 times when on the Arkansas 5 yard line???

The Tigers get a much needed off-week this week and maybe the coaches can get their heads together and get a clue.  They better make the most of it, because their next game is at West Virginia and the Mountaineers would love to improve their season by clobbering a name opponent.  Unless something drastically changes, I can see AU ending up with 5-7 for the season.  Although the way they are playing, even Tennessee-Martin may not be a given. I am sorry my Auburn friends, but it just looks that bad.

FLORIDA over LSU - Actually that should read "Florida beat the holy crap out of LSU". It was that bad. And I for one sure has hell didn't see that one coming at all. I would have never thought that the LSU O & D line would have been so totally manhandled. I guess I drank the koolaid and thought LSU was stronger. And before it is offered up, it would not made a single bit of difference if Jean-Francois had been there  or not.  Florida, which has had no running game (other than Tebow or Harvin) all season, ran all over the Tigers. And Tebow looked like the Heisman winner that he is.

But the big shocker was the Florida defense. A unit that has been suspect so far, suddenly looked like a pro team. They made Lee look like the freshman that he is, and totally slammed the door on Scott, holding him to just 35 yards on 12 carries.

Had this game been even marginally closer, I might not suggest the following: LSU was way overrated. What happened Saturday night was an embarrassment and a total domination on both sides of the ball.  For all of the hype, the vaunted LSU O & D lines got totally whipped in all phases of the game. It is just that simple. So was it a case of Florida being that good or LSU being that bad? I guess time will tell. But if it is the latter instead of the former, it could spell doom to any hopes of the Tigers repeating as SEC champs (after that kind of beat down, I don't think even a one loss LSU gets into the BCS title game).

The SEC East now looks like a mad scramble. Georgia, Florida, Vandy all with 1 conference loss, and SC looking much better at 5-2, the next few weeks will be a heckuva ride. It is anybody's title.  In the West it looks like a two horse race. Bama and LSU control their own destiny. For now. The way things have been going, each week is bringing new surprises.

I actually did better on the "Other 3" picks this week going 2 for 3.

TEXAS over OKLAHOMA - In what was a back and forth offensive showcase, the Texas defense came up when it had to. My hats off to the Longhorns for really stepping up. Colt McCoy played a great game and showed real leadership and Texas found a rushing game in Ogbonnaya. But I still have questions about both defenses as they both gave up over 430 yards of total offense. Or was it just because they were up against two great offenses? A few more weeks in the pass-happy Big 12 will answer those questions.

PENN STATE over WISCONSIN - Forget the Spread HD offense - although it performed as advertised - the star of the Nittany Lions' win was a defense that smothered the Badgers. Clark also delivered on the passing attack as he connected with 8 different receivers (Auburn, take note that is what the spread is supposed to be). I'd have to say that for right now, PSU looks like the team to beat in the Big 10, and their final game against Michigan State may decide the conference champ.

NORTH CAROLINA over NOTRE DAME - I told you guys that the Tar Heels are a team with guts. They just find a way to win. Sexton again proved to be a real leader (I wonder if Yates will ever get his job back?) showing a load of determination in scoring the winning TD. I think that their game with Ga Tech on November 8, will be a huge matchup in the Coastal Division. But in the meantime, this UNC bunch is a fun team to watch. However, like Vandy, they may get burned living so close to the edge all the time.

We are now starting to have some clarity in the NC race, as most of the top teams have gotten past their soft games and gotten into the meat of their schedule. So I am quite sure that there will be more surprises to yet come. I am still anxiously awaiting the first BCS Poll so we can really rant and rave about the injustices of the system.

Your not the only one that didn't see the results of the Florida/LSU game. Wow that was a beatdown. The Florida offense finally came alive for the first time this season, and LSU really laid an egg. I missed every game this weekend due to a big argument with the wife. Well every game except the last drive of the first half of this game and the 3rd Quarter. Though looking at the final score I didn't miss anything by not watching the 4th.

Not sure what the hell is going on with my Tigers, there is no excuse for losing to the Razorback's this season. Looks like the wheels are beginning to fall off of the bus though. I had mixed feelings about the firing of Franklin, but I without a doubt thought that Todd should have been benched a long time ago. Good thing they have two weeks to get the D healthy and teach the offense how to play football.

Bru, always impressed with all the effort and enthusiasm you bring to your blogs.
Plus 3 week 8. There are two rather obvious top 2 games this week, I won't mention those just so I can see what you decide to pick. I cast a vote for last pick, unbeaten BYU at 6-1 TCU. I chose that game because of all the controversy surrounding BYU's BCS buster image. A victory by the Horned frogs would end that saga!

You know what irks me? When broadcasters pick games and the miss 'em and pretend like it never happens. <imaginary conversation>"Herbstreit: Hey, Corso... remember when you picked Michigan over Toledo? Corso: Nope. never happened. I knew Toledo would shut down the Wolverine offense" </imaginary conversation>

Props, Bruce, for humbly admitting you cannot predict ALL of the games in the crazy SEC. :)

I enjoy the blog. keep up the good work.

LSU doesn't even belong in the top 25 after the Florida loss. Who has LSU beat so far? I'll tell you, App State, North Texas, Uburn, and Mississippi State. How could you NOT see the LSU defense giving up a huge game? They are the only team that made Auburn and Mississippi State's offenses look competent. Voters are still putting LSU in their polls based on last year's results, which is ridiculous. Maybe Michigan should be back in the top 25 since they had a good bowl win over Florida last year. Give me a break!

I can agree with you now. But then again, hindsight is always 20/20. I admit, I bought into the LSU hype and ignored the nagging little voice in the back of my head. Just like you, I voiced concerns about LSU's defense following the Auburn and MSU games. But I couldn't get over Florida dropping the game to Ole Miss and how they seemed to have been exposed. LSU will definitely have to show me something to get my respect again.

October 13, 2008  12:32 PM ET

If I was Florida, I'd be worried that I actually gave up 21 points to LSU.

LSU's resume keeps looking worse and worse. For comparison's sake, LSU beat Auburn 26-21...Arkansas beats Auburn 25-22...is LSU and Arkansas playing the same football?

Arkansas was able to hold Auburn to less yardage and gained more. In fact, Arkansas dominated yardage at one point 336-84 and was behind 20-16.

Maybe Florida just had a bad game against Ol'Miss and they are as good as everybe thought at the beginning of the year. Everyone has a bad week. Its inevitable. If Texas or Penn State lose a game to me Florida is more deserving of another shot at the NC game then say USC.

Good point BigJoe.

Why wouldn't the same argument be made for USC though?

Or, are you saying it does but Florida would have a stronger case in the event they both end up with 1 loss?

hmmm, that is a tough argument. If you look at it, is a loss to the Beavers or the Rebels worse? On the face of it, both teams seem about the same - overachieving in some cases, underachieving in others.

However, all things being equal, if both Florida and USC go undefeated, could you not argue that Florida had the tougher remaining schedule? Especially considering that Florida's path would also include the championship game in Atlanta?

This weekend just proved once again that the games have to be played. Nothing ever seems to go the way it should.

I second that motion. As my old coach used to say, "it'll all come out in the wash"

October 13, 2008  10:26 PM ET

Sounds crazy but if the Game Chickens can get by LSU this weekend (it is at home), and I give them a pretty decent shot, than the remaining schedule all of a sudden does not seem that daunting. If FL beats UGA and Vandy starts to fold, the USC - FL game could decide who goes to Atlanta. I think Garcia will play the rest of the way as well. No more Smelly. He smells...I think you will be hearing about Garcia for a long, long time.

October 13, 2008  10:39 PM ET

I agree. And judging from LSU's offensive performance this weekend, and in light of SC's defensive performance this season, I am going to have to think real hard about that game. SC seems to have all the momentum going. The big factor is going to be whether LSU can pull their pants back up and play some ball. But I have had questions all season about their O & D lines being as good as advertised.

If nothing else Steve Superior is still one the best coaches in the game. Compared to Les Miles, the advantage is almost criminal.

But I need to stop, I am giving up my next week picks early ;)

October 14, 2008  12:00 AM ET

You guys talk about how LSU must not be as good as advertised after one loss, but say how Florida must have just had a bad game against Ole Miss. How come LSU just couldn't have had a bad game against Florida? Ole Miss isn't that great of a team so it would stand to reason that if Florida has a bad game and loses by one point then if LSU has a bad game against a really good team the win would be a little bit worse don't you think?

LSU is nowhere near as bad as they played against Florida I can assure you. I would bet the farm LSU beats SC by at least 20 this weekend as they are going to be really pissed off about the Florida loss. SC is terrible at QB, have an ok running back situation, ok reciever situation, and a pretty good defense. So I guess also by most of you guys thinking Miami must be better than LSU right I mean they didn't lose to Florida nearly as bad right?

Florida doesn't get beat in the Swamp at night by anybody. Once they get a lead against anybody in the Swamp the points come in bunches. If you let them score early they score often in the Swamp. I don't care who they are playing.

October 14, 2008  01:33 AM ET

Just a couple issues I found in what was a pretty good blog post...

To say that Mississippi State could still have something to say about the race in the West might be a bit of a reach. Don't forget, this offense is 103rd in total offense and 114th in points scored this season, including getting shut out offensively against Auburn in a loss that's looking worse by the second. And they let up 22 to La Tech and 38 to Ga Tech, so it's not like their defense is really playing with a high level of consistency either. They could steal a game from a contender at some point, but that's about all the say they'll have in the SEC West race.

And as others have mentioned, it may have been more obvious that LSU was overrated than anyone would like to admit. Right now, their first four wins look mediocre at best, and considering how bad Auburn's offense looked against an obviously inconsistent Miss St (and now Arkansas, but that's after the fact) defense and how good it looked against LSU, you'd almost have to consider them "bad wins", if they exist.

And this is nitpicky, but Texas had a good rushing game before the OU win...too much was made of Colt McCoy being their leading rusher. Currently they have 16 rushing TDs compared to 18 passing. In comparison, teams known for their rushing like LSU and Georgia have 9(10 passing) and 13(9 passing), respectively. As far as rushing yardage, Texas has 1156 yards on the ground, compared to Georgia's 956 and LSU's 909. But good blog, just arguing like I always seem to.

Well lets see UGA and LSU have played SEC defenses and Texas has played cream puff and Big 12 defenses oh wait they are the same thing.

it seems like grounghogs day on FN. i just keep getting in the same arguments......as for you wildbill, i do not agree with what you say, but i will defend to the death your right to say it. im not going to claim the SEC defences are not good, i wonder how much of the SEC's defensive "prowess" is really just in sub-par offence.

the only good SEC D either has seen is Bama. auburn is at best average, tenn, miss state, and sc??? give me a break. fla could probably be put some where above auburn but no where Bama.
