Oklahoma and Texas were truly tested for the first time this week. The Sooners failed on defense in a dramatic and disappointing fashion. Texas played well enough to win but if they end up playing for the national championship they'd better get more solid on D as well. For OU Ryan Reynolds (LB) went out injured but if you're planning on being a national champion you can't crumble like that losing just one starter.

True the running game looked poor as well but a team should win when scoring 35 points.  Apparently OU blogs have some 'fire Stoops' rants happening. That would truly be an idiotic move. However I'm starting to lose faith in Brent Venables, the Sooners haven't had a truly great D since their national championship year and it seems each year since there has been at least one game where an offense has seriously exploited their weaknesses. At least we didn't have to wait until the national championship to find out this time. OU is probably a top ten program and their offense is excellent but without a reasonable D those SEC teams will chew them to pieces come January.

LSU proved that they took a step back after losing the people that they did in last years draft. They still could exploit Alabama's youth and win that showdown later this season but now Alabama has to feel confident about their destiny. The Tigers seemed to fall apart after the opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown, they need to be more stable than that to compete for the SEC title.

USC looked good against Arizona State. Or should I say the Sun Devils looked bad? In any rate the Pac 10 belongs to the Trojans, big surprise. I was impressed that they held ASU scoreless, I always expect this game to be a shootout, maybe USC has solved their D problems so apparent in the Beaver game.

Of all the top teams losing this week you've got to feel a little sorry for Missouri, they're probably as good as the other teams that failed but their history as a football program will now have people questioning them a little more. Of course losing at home to the Cowboys doesn't help either but a lot of these teams were tested for the first time, OU drops to #4 and Missouri drops to #11? A win in the Big 12 conference championship would restore some credibility but how much?

Penn State is slowly turning me into a believer. Beating Wisconsin as badly as they did was impressive. If they don't look ahead to Ohio St. this week and beat Michigan they could run the table.

As my punishment for overrating OU again (at least their defense), I got to see Tennessee on TV once again. They looked scattered and inept, again, but what surprised me was how Georgia did not(!) dominate like they should have. The Volunteers look like a mid pack team from a weaker conference (ACC maybe) and the Bulldogs looked better but again not great.

     Top 5:

1: Alabama (can their youth handle the pressure?)

2: Texas (beat a real defense and I'll call you #1)

3: Penn State

4: Florida

5: USC

I guess that's all for now, I'll be back with a preview in a couple of days, I missed last week due to illness, tis' that time of year...anyhow later,    Bones

You mean USC's DEFENSE looked good. I've never seen such horrible offense coming out of the Trojans during the second half.

Bones, hope you're feeling better, glad you're back and I'll be looking for your next preview. Your blogs are always top notch.

I am looking for anyone who has news about Florida's placekicker Caleb Sturgis. He started out as the kick-off kicker at the beginning of the year and now I can't find any news about him. Lord knows we need a placekicker to compete with the Big Boys. Thanks.

i echo norka's sentiment. it is that time of year. i have a cold myself...trying to decide if i want to use my sick days for when i really need them or save them for the beach..

anyways--i wish mikey would putter out at AZ and go back to norman. brent venables looks cool with the play sheet strapped on his manly forearms, but getting scorched the last 4 BCS bowls has me calling for his job. i guess i like bob stoops, hell i was glad they faked that punt on 4th and 6 even if they came up a tad short.

but old brent needs a co-defensive guy calling some shots. if its not the secondary, its something else (usually the secondary).
and reynolds going out shouldnt cause the entire thing to collapse, as you pointed out.

loved how OU put up 35, but damn if you let them come back and hit you harder. that kick off return by speedy gonzalez shipman sucked, as did his 2 other TDs or however many.

sam bradford threw for 5 TDs!! and yet, precisely as was stated, OUs defense somehow couldnt stop them. hell there was one dropped pass in the endzone by some fat guy #99 that was a gimme, yet they go and convert the next play. sheesh

i attribute any incoherency to the nyquil.
would that i could always use that excuse.

ps fat guy #99 for texas...who is that guy? a fullback?

Week 7 thoughts. Any chance you could carry out the top 25 when you do your review of the week? I just am interested in your opinion on all the teams. Get well soon Bones.

Hey DoIt4Johnny, thx for the well wishes (norka and bourbonheel too) good luck with your cold as well. According to the Longhorns' roster 99 is a DT, he must be a multi-purpose player. Strange to put someone that big in a pass catching role. Didn't matter that he dropped that pass for sure, Texas could do what they wanted on Saturday. Venables said they were using a tested and tried scheme that has worked for ten years... maybe it has against Baylor and the 'directional schools' (SE Louisiana Tech State or whomever, lol), but against an experienced QB who has been putting up 50 pts per game... hmmmm. Wonder if that's a scheme they used against West Virginia last year or USC in the N.C. game a few years ago, etc. I loved the fake punt too but I also think it was an indication of how little faith they had with the D's ability to stop the Horns. I'd love to see Mike come back too, maybe we should seek out some Arizona boards and start pretending we're disgruntled Wildcat fans.

bourbonheel87, I'll expand my top teams soon but at the moment there's still so much unsettled. My top 5 has been virtually obliterated each week. It's almost strange when one of the teams hangs on for a week. After seeing what happened to ECU, Fresno St. and Wake Forest I'm very suspicious about hot lower profile teams. I was big on Utah for a while but now I'm wondering. I still feel BYU isn't worthy of top 5 status. Maybe top 10... but when your signature win was against UCLA, and your potential future best games are against TCU and Utah... I don't know. Anyhow I'll try to expand as soon as I feel I have a better grasp of who's who.

>Venables said they were using a tested and tried scheme that has worked for ten years... maybe it has against Baylor

precisely, it has worked for 10 years during the regular season against teams not ranked in the top five. sure, he raves all about it when OU (barely) beats iowa st. or baylor, but where was it when coachless W VA ran it up last year.

and please o please dont get me remembering that boise st game. oh boy, here come the chest pains. where the **** was that tried and true defense against that *** ****** statue of liberty play? or the 4th and 35 before that when they lateraled the ball 6 times to score.
notwithstanding the exact plays...ah forget it. now i'm sour.

anyway.feel better. mizzou beating UT will help my recovery, to be sure!

The problem with pointing out the "flawed" Big 12 defenses is that you have failed to point out the extremely unproductive SEC offenses. You can argue that the offenses in the SEC play badly because of the good defensive play, but I'm not buying it. The SEC offenses are far worse than the Big 12 defenses.

Don't worry. It won't be long before some poor team comes along and makes Venables their head coach.

October 16, 2008  10:53 AM ET

DWS, Florida's lowest point total this season has been 26. Hardly unproductive. And with the SEC winning the last two (and 3 of 5) national championships I've got to believe their D does give them an advantage. Your 'Horns beat USC in a great shootout, I still thank Texas for that game and I don't thank Texas often, lol. However, OU's D has failed them in big games numerous times lately and if they're winning the Big 12 most (!) years and many of the Big 12 teams play a similar game then I have to agree with the fawning SEC D fans.
Also, I'm sure you're right, someone can use Venables, but he hasn't improved the OU D over any of the previous coordinators since the Mike Stoops era. Great coaches sometimes need to find a great fit.

October 16, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Sorry, edit... he (Venables) hasn't improved over any of the previous seasons... each year there's an important game where there's an embarassing lapse in D.
