I want to start off with saying that i have nothing agaisnt Michael Phelps. What he did this summer was one of the greatest individual sporting achievements ever. But sometimes sports is greater than just individual accomplishments on the field. Hamilton is one of these cases. After years of being known as such a promising prospect, he almost threw it all away to drugs. He ultimately won the battle through support from his family and his love of baseball. I had the opportunitty to attend the home-run derby this year, and it was one of the most surreal moments of my life. Watching him at the plate, surronded by his peers while the theme from the Natural blasted was so powerful and moving. It was almost too good to believe. In my opinion, he is the ultimate role model for anyone who is at rock bottom, either in sports or life, that you are never fully out of it. I strongly believe that Josh Hamilton should be considered for Sportsman/Co-Sportsman of the Year. Aside from his all-star season, what he has battled through is a remarkable story and needs to be celebrated.

Overcoming a personal failing does not qualify one as sportsman of the year. He didn't overcome a physical condition or circumstances beyond his control, he simply stopped abusing illegal substances. That may be something to celebrate on a personal level, but certainly not a reason to anoint him sportsman of the year.
