Longhorns were the most impressive ranked No. 1 that has been ranked in that spot this season. A week after beating Oklahoma in a game nobody thought it would win, Texas destroyed Missouri. Texas has scored 101 points in its past two games, thrashing rival Oklahoma and beating Missouri even worse in its first game this season as the No. 1-ranked team in the country. But we still don't know whether the Longhorns are the best team in college football. (Im gonna get murdered on that sentence from Texas fans) We still might not know two weeks from now, after Texas has hosted Oklahoma State and played at Texas Tech. For whatever reason, Big 12 teams don't play defense anymore. The league that was once known for its physical defensive plays has been transformed into arena league football. However, the way the Longhorns are scoring, their defense won't have to be stellar down the stretch during the rest of Big 12 and BCS play. Texas' defense, which was one of the worst in the country in 2007, has played remarkably well during the course of the season.
Alabama trailed for the first time all season, scored 24 straight to take a 24-3 halftime lead and then barely held on because the offense went interception, fumble and four punts in the second half (Alabama was outgained 359-326). The Tide has won its past two games by a total of seven points since rising to No. 2 with a series of easy victories. It was also another in a series of close calls with Ole Miss. Alabama had won each of the past three meetings by a field goal, that's something to be concerned about. (Too many close calls for the Tide for me to actually consider that they will win out the rest of the season). The Tide has the league's top running game and rush defense, but was outgained 158-107 on the ground and with defensive tackle Terrence Cody out for a few weeks, the tide are in for a rough time, especially against LSU.
For the first 17 minutes of play, it seemed as though Penn States' season was over. Another 10th straight loss against Michigan was on the horizon but behind the running of Evan Royster and a few momentum-shifting plays by the defense and special teams, the Nittany Lions withstood the Wolverines' early flurry and snapped a nine-game losing streak to their Big Ten rivals. After racking up 185 yards in the first quarter, Michigan managed just 106 the rest of the way. Penn State does not hurt itself with turnovers or penalties, and it's hard to hold down Daryll Clark, Royster , Stephon Green and the offense for four quarters. JoePa's getting a really good look at his latest national championship contender and faces its biggest test of the season this week in Columbus at the shoe which is going to be a rough, physical game.
In closing, History suggests that time spent speculating about several undefeated teams is time wasted. In three or four weeks, we're more likely to be discussing which one-loss team is most deserving of reaching the national title game.
