Every morning when I get into work the first thing I do is check in with SI.com to see the newest sports reports to hit the scene. Nothing was different this morning, I showed up unlocked the doors and turn on the old computer and log into SI.com. There was a lot of headlines to look at this morning and the only one that stood out was "Culpepper wants to end his brief NFL retirement". "****" I say.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have been a huge Minnesote Vikings fan my whole life and I loved Culpepper when he was a Viking but when I saw that headline the only thing that crossed my mind was "there must be enough injured quarterbacks in the NFL that Daunte thinks he might actually get a job".
When he decide in September to retire it was because he couldn't find a starting job anywhere and he didn't want to be a back-up quarterback. He also stated he didn't want to sit around as a back-up waiting for someone to get injured enough to be able to play.
Well that time must have come pretty early this year because he is considering a come back out of retirement. I don't believe he will be effective wherever he goes and he has made such a negative reputation for himself that he won't have the fan support as he did when he first set foot in the NFL. The only way he will be able to win the hearts of any fans is to have an unbelievable season, like the 2004 season, but I don't think he has it in him.
As much as I would like to see the Vikings get a quarterback that can actually pass the ball and require opposing defenses to keep an eye on the passer and not the running back. I would hate to see the Vikings make the mistake of trying to pick up Culpepper out of retirement thinking he might be able to take the focus off of Adrian Peterson.
But as we all know, the Vikings would never in a million years have Culpepper as their starting quarterback again. (HOPEFULLY!!!)
