The old vs the new (well still old, but new).  Brett Favre was traded to NY for a conditional 3rd to 1st round draft pick.  Chad Pennington the old QB was deported to sunny Miami.  The rusult?  Lets see who's been better thus far.  Is it the gunslinger, or the game manager that no one wanted in NY anymore?

Pennington is 5th in the NFL with a 100.5 passer rating, Favre is 13th with an 89.5.  Advantage: Pennington

Pennington has completed 140 of 202 passes for 69.3 % completion ratio.  Favre has completed 161 of 235 for 68.5% completion ratio.  Advantage: Pennington (close)

Pennington has thrown for 1,710 yards. Favre has thrown for 1,611. Pennington has 100 more yards passing despite throwing the ball 33 less times.  Advantage:  Pennington

Pennington has thrown 7 TD's. Favre has thrown 15. Advantage:  Favre

Pennington has thrown 3 INT's with 1 fumble, which was recovred.  Favre has thrown 11 INT's with 6 fumbles, with 4 recovred.  Pennington 3 total turnovers, Favre 13 total turnovers.  Advantage:  Pennington

Pennington has been sacked 11 times.  Favre has been sacked 16 times.  Advantage:  Pennington

Pennington has had 1 poor game this season in a loss to the Cardinals.  Favre has had 3 poor games this season in the past three games with passer ratings of 73, 47, and 76.  Advantage:  Pennington

Through 7 games Pennington's longest pass has been an 80 yard TD, Favres has been 56.  Advantage:  Pennington

Pennington has 20 pass plays of 20 yards or more. Favre has 17.  Pennington has 5completions of 40 yards or more, Favre has 4.  Advantage:  Pennington

Pennington is 3-4 with the rebuilding Miami Dolphins. Favre is 4-3 with the rebuilt NY Jets.  Advantage:  Pennington (close)

Who's the better quarterback? Pennington leads Favre in 9 out of 10 major statistical categories.  The numbers through both QB's first 7 games have shown that Pennington has done more with less. He has passed for more yards with less pass attempts to receivers like Greg Camarillo, Fasano, and Ted Ginn.  He has not turned the ball over and has given his team a chance to win every week. In short, he has done more, with a less talented team. Althought Favre has thrown 8 more touchdowns, he has 10 more turnovers than Pennington which produced 8 more scoring drives.  Favre has turned the ball over and has repeatedly put his team in position to lose games rather than win them, this includes the "gimme games".

The arm strength that was questioned in Pennington now sees Pennington leading in every major passing category, including downfield completions.  I will admit that I am biased, but this is hard evidence that when you put two quarterbacks in brand new offenses, same amount of time to learn the playbook, one has clearly outshined the other.

In my opinion, this team wasted a draft pick and millions of dollars to put some #4 jerseys in the seats in Giant stadium.  Maybe it's about money and publicity, but Pennington has clearly been the better QB of the two at this stage in their careers.
