Texas faced an opponent who seemed custom made to give them problems, which they did. Colt McCoy struggled. Still Texas took care of business. Unless the Longhorns start having this kind of game consistently I feel they can perch at #1. Other than McCoy's int and OSU's better rushing yardage Texas did have better stats by a fair margin. The 'Horns probably won't face another team like this until a bowl game. I can't see tham losing unless Texas Tech has a much better defense than Missouri, which I doubt. Statistically the Raiders look a little better than the Tigers but they haven't played Texas yet which might be the difference in itself.

Alabama played a good full 60 minutes against a Tennessee team people were saying could pull off an upset.  Again, taking care of business is important and winning with room to spare should give them more confidence.

Penn State squeaked a win over the Buckeyes. They shut down OSU's offense but the Buckeye's O hasn't been very impressive against anyone of importance except Michigan State.  In a game I thought would shine some good light on the Big 10 leader (whoever came out on top) I really found more doubt in the skill level in the conference. Hats off to PSU for beating OSU at home but I worry about the Lions' chances against non-conference foes.

Florida and Georgia truly came out to play this week. Georgia dominated LSU and had their statement game. I think they deserve a step up in the ranking. Same with Florida who crushed Kentucky. Not a game they should lose but they did it in a fashion that shows they're ready for the end of the season. The Bulldogs and Gators play this week and the true contender will be left standing.

Texas Tech and Oklahoma shelled the Kansas schools, the difference being: Tech gave up 315 yards of offense, OU gave up 550.  The meeting between the two schools later this season might create some problems like: custom building a scoreboard to handle the appropriate points readout...

USC was the only highly ranked team, this week, to struggle against an unranked team.  They committed one more turnover than Arizona but threw for quite a bit more yards passing... what happened? I didn't see the game but the stats speak of a dud performance. The Trojans seem to do that every few weeks. Doesn't look too impressive on a national scale.

Quite a few upsets down the ranks but in the usual conferences where upsets are, paradoxically, the norm.  Examples:  goodbye Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh and South Florida, hello North Carolina and Maryland. Good thing we have 710 bowl games to accomodate the mediocrity.

My Top 10:

1: Texas

2: Alabama

3: Florida

4: Georgia

5: Penn State

6: Oklahoma

7: Texas Tech

8: USC

9: Utah

10: Florida State

That's it for this week, until preview time....    Bones

Good top ten. I would rather Tide play PSU than FL or GA. FL looked real good although KY had several starters injured. Not that it would have realy mattered.

No comment about the 'Horns there Tide? Can't blame you....because we are coming.

Anyone who thinks you should not be 1 is crazy. Now PSU getting #1 votes I will argue.

LOL @ you putting Florida State #10 and PSU at #5. And Utah at 9th? Seriously? What Kool-Aid are you drinking?

October 28, 2008  12:13 PM ET

I think Florida could beat any of the other top teams. Thanks for ranking them up there.

October 28, 2008  06:44 PM ET

florida is a pretty good team but i guess we will never get to see who they can beat in the top five since everyone else is undefeated and alabama and tx are undefeated for reasons besides they havent lost its because they seam to play as a team everyone else has one or two stars on there team and all of a suden there a great team wrong to win everyone has to play good you gotta have somone step up if someone does not play well florida does not have that option they got a tebow parvin combo and a tail back thats tryin to make a name for himself

colb_osu, other than wanting OSU to be in the top ten, what other adjustments would you make?
First of all, in my mind, OSU has played two good teams and split. Won and lost by close margins. They were 7-6 last year and lost to Troy among other non-factor teams. I'm not 'dissing' the Cowboys. I'd rather see them successful more than a lot of other OU opponents. If they beat Texas Tech and/or the Sooners I'll gladly give them a better ranking.
Florida State is a bit of a reach but I decided against a 2 (or 3, 4, 5 lol) way tie. In retrospect OSU was probably a better choice at 10.
Penn State is undefeated(!) in a conference of questionable quality. If the Big 12 teams weren't putting up huge offensive numbers (mainly against each other) it might be under scrutiny as well. Not a lot of non-conference games to point at to support it's greatness. I'd love to think the Big 12 was the premiere conference in the country but come bowl time they have some proving to do. Most polls are putting Penn State at #3. I feel that's high after watching the Ohio State game but, like most other teams, they haven't had much of a chance to prove themselves non-conference.
Utah has a good recent history against reasonable 'Big 6 conference' opponents. Again they're undefeated. Once a team loses a game (including my Sooners) I don't believe their fans have much ground to stand on pushing their poll position. Take care of business, that'll be your arguement leverage.
Obviously any one of my 'placements' could be argued. You named three... give me your reasons, making a criticism without support is pointless. Give me your top 10 and we can compare Kool-Aid.

My Top 10:

1. Texas (Hook 'em ! ! ! !)

2. Alabama (SEC undefeated . . so far!)

3. Oklahoma (loss to Texas by 10 . . . . 3 minus Shipley's kickoff return)

4. Oklahoma State (loss to Texas by 4)

5. Florida (loss to Mississippi . . . . looking tough lately, but lost to Mississippi)

6. Georgia (got blown out in the first half by Alabama earlier on, but also looking tough lately)

7. Penn State (undefeated Big 10 - just isn't that impressive this year)

8. Texas Tech (we'll find out how good as season comes to an end)

9. USC (LOST TO OREGON STATE - THE BEAVERS)

10. Utah (we'll see if they can beat TCU)

I don't base any rankings on what a team has done in years past. The year is 2008 and each and every team should be judged accordingly . . by what they have (or have not) done on the field THIS year (and only this year).

Aside from the tried and true "Penn State is not Ohio State" song I've been singing, honestly, we'll just have to wait till whatever bowl game we end up in to see exactly whether there's anything to worry about or not.
