The Philadelphia Phillies outscored the Tampa Bay Rays in the second segment of the suspended Game 5 to complete their 4 games to 1 victory in the World Series. Left-handed reliever J. C. Romero got the Win, with the incredible Brad Lidge earning yet another Save. Never before had there been a suspended game in World Series competition, and this suspension lasted from Monday to Wednesday due to the inclement weather. Phillies fans were patient waiting for the resumption of play, and it seemed very fitting that the long-awaited triumph was completed in the city of Philadelphia. None of the Phillies were anxious to return to Tampa Bay's Dome.
This was only the Second World Series Championship for the Phillies, the previous one occurring in 1980. I feel very satisfied because I have been a long-suffering Phillies fan and this year I have been saying that it was OUR YEAR. The so-called "Experts" said the Phillies would finish behind the N.Y. Mets in NL East. Then after the Phils won the NL East, they said C.C. Sabathia was unhittable and the Brewers would be too much for the Phils. Then after Milwaukee was defeated three games to one, they all predicted that the Los Angeles Dodgers, led by the invincible Manny Ramirez and a dominating pitching staff, would make short work of the Phillies. When the Phillies defeated the Dodgers (despite Hot Dog Ramirez' hot bat) four games to one, the great majority of the "Experts" selected the Tampa Bay Rays to win the World Series. Never before have so many media people been so consistently wrong about a team. The Phillies' victory is sweet indeed for the city of Philadelphia!
After years of frustration for the Phillies, the Eagles, the Sixers, and the Flyers, maybe now the national media will start to respect Philadelphia. Philly fans are knowledgeable and passionate. They deserve to be winners!
