Yes, go ahead and sign Mannie, 3 years and sixty-five million. I'm not sold on Casey Blake, bring in Furcal for a good price, yeah yeah, yeah. Whatever you do, sign Derek Lowe.  Billingsley, despite being terrible in the playoffs, is coming on if he hasn't come on already. Kershaw is ready for a full-time spot in the rotation. You can round out the 4 and 5 spots with some kids or a guy like Maddux. Signing Lowe gives us a reliable front-of-the rotation prescence that will give us 12-17 wins, 200+ innings, and 32+ starts. His name is not as flashy as peavey or Sabathia, but he is nearly as reliable and will not cost as much.

Lowe gives me gray hairs. He has his share of starts where he gives up a few runs, a few more hits than you'd like, has to work out of a few more jams than you'd like, and doesn't inspire the "lock-down" confidence you'd get from a peavey or Sabathia. BUT.........If you take strikeouts out of the mix, his stats are comparable, he makes as many starts, and keeps you in as many games. Yes the offense and especially the defense will have to actually do their jobs,( hopefully Coletti isn't drooling about a Jeff Kent comeback), and perhaps he isn't the dominant #1 ace everyone dreams about, but he is solid, consistent, and will show up in October. On top fo that his salary requirements will not be nearly as ridiculous as Sabathia's, and you won't have to give away the core of your team that the Padres will be looking for in exchange for Peavey.

Lowe says he wants to play on the east coast, although he hasn't ruled out playing for the blue. This is the time for Coletti to make a serious pitch, before the Yanks and Red Sox wake up. While signing Lowe may not be up there with a Mannie or CC signing, it does give the blue crew a strong prospect of three strong starters going into next year, a neccessity if they are to build on last year.

I still think Lowe will go with Boston, but you never know what Coletti will do.

Be lucky in finding your dream job.
