This game would be so much easier to predict if the teams just stopped playing each other. I don't know about the next two weeks when Texas Tech has to play Oklahoma State and then the Sooners in Norman but for one day they were flat out amazing. A lot of sports columnists and announcers have questioned Mike Leach and the Red Raiders coaching staff about not going for two after scoring their game winning touchdown. Maybe Texas Tech's coaches should be commended more for the game plan they used to dethrone the Longhorns. Through the first half they seemed to know what to do at every step catching Texas flatfooted so often it was hard to tell who was # 1 and who wasn't. The Longhorns played like champions for most of the second half but Tech showed some great composure and desire. Hats off to them, if they didn't have Oklahoma in their path I'd pull for them the rest of the way.

Florida continued to play very good football this week, Georgia did not.  Georgia did get a couple of bad calls but losing 49 - 10 is not a matter of bad officiating. The Gators held Knowshon Moreno to 65 yards rushing and it seemed after the Bulldogs missed an early field goal they completely lost control of the game. Georgia has played a yoyo type of season and this was the wrong week to play on a downswing.

Elsewhere Alabama and Oklahoma cruised to easy victories. Hard to fault 'Bama for 'only' winning 35-0 against Arkansas State. The Sooners impressed a lot of people in their crushing of the Huskers.

Penn State and USC had the week off, wait a minute USC played Washington... yes USC had the week off.

Florida State continues to tread water with the rest of the ACC, losing to Georgia Tech and wasting an opportunity to prove that they're a cut above. South Florida did a similar nose dive against Cincinnati, and Tulsa against Arkansas. Utah barely beat New Mexico and in my mind that casts serious doubt on their credibility. Look for the Utes to tumble against TCU or BYU.

    My top 10 this week:

1: Alabama

2: Texas Tech

3: Florida

4: Texas

5: Oklahoma

6: Penn State

7: Oklahoma State

8: USC

9: Missouri

10: TCU

How many years before we see another undefeated national champion I wonder...

Until preview time... Bones

How many years you ask? Don't sell Penn State so short.

Hey Norka, true Penn State might pull it off but after watching the PSU/OSU game my view of them clouded a bit. That on top of watching the Big Ten struggle again this year. Weirder things have happened, I was just hoping Oklahoma wouldn't be embarassed by Florida State in 2000 when they won it all. I have little doubt that the Nittany Lions will get to the big game but I can't see them winning at this time against Florida or Texas or Alabama. If USC gets in I think PSU could pull it off.

Penn State will go undefetaed and win it all this year.

Maybe we should question the caliber of the entire Big 12 conference since Oklahoma routinely loses BCS games to inferior opponents. Of course that makes no sense, but that's exactly what everyone is saying about the Big 10 based on Ohio State's pathetic performances in the last 2 BCS title games.

I though Penn State going into the Horseshoe and winning a night game against the Buckeyes was very impressive (no penalties or turnovers the entire game). I'm not saying the Big Ten is great this year, but it's still the 3rd best conference behind the Big 12 & SEC (and after Florida and Bama, is the SEC really all that good?).

Alabama will be exposed in the SEC title game. They are very overrated.

Best teams in the country are Oklahoma and USC, too bad neither will get to the BCS Title game!

One more thing...

TCU in the top 10 is absurd. Beating an awful BYU team is hardly anyhthing to brag about. I'd take Ball State over TCU any day of the week (and for the record, Ball State is overrated).

Bones, with that comment I take it you think even less of the Buckeyes! I'm a Buckeye to the core so 'bear' with me whilst I take out my homer flag and fly it in your face. Whoever Ohio State face in their BCS BOWL will be soundly defeated. I really do believe they are playing great D as of late and should win out. But anyway I always enjoy your blogs, keep up the good work!

What an idiot. USC is bottom half top ten at best. I'd take a bet TCU even against Penn St. any day. TCU shut OK down running and except for two slipped defensive backs, the score is 21-10.

I will take that bet all day everyday. TCU wouldnt score on PSU.

Hell I'd give 14 and watch PSU walk away

TCU against Penn State? I even agree that TCU at 10th might indicate that he is a little **** for the Horned Frogs.

I bet there are 113 teams in Division I college football that can say "Except for (insert 1 or 2 bad plays here) the (insert team name) would have won." That's only thinking that the 6 undefeated teams left wouldn't take any plays back.

The fact still remains that TCU is 9-1 and their only decent win was against BYU. BYU on the other hand doesn't really have a decent win. The beat Illinois, which looked good at the time but not really now, and they beat UCLA, which also looked good at the time because UCLA had just beaten Tennessee. However, look how Tennessee has ended up so far.

So really, the highlight of TCUs season is losing to Oklahoma by 25 points. Not much of a highlight is it?

November 4, 2008  04:22 PM ET

They bleeped out h.o.r.n.y. oops!

November 4, 2008  04:34 PM ET

I keep repeating to myself... "One game at a time. One game at a time. One game at a time." whoa... gotta stop typing that before I go all "Shining" on everyone.

I understand the #6 "power" ranking.. and have no quibble with an opinion. But would you, if you were a voter in the Coaches poll, put a 1-loss team over an undefeated major conference team in the final poll?

"I'd take a bet TCU even against Penn St. any day. "
I don't care who you are, dats funny right dare.

Thanks for the posts everyone, I hit a few raw nerves I believe. Ill try to support my decisions in one (huge) post - here goes:
A: TCU beat BYU and Stanford, not great but not a bad resume for a 1 loss team this year. The other games they won they dominated (except a close one v.s. Colorado State) and they played Oklahoma pretty well compared to OU's other opponents save Texas. Boise St. beat Oregon by 5. Utah barely beat Michigan and Oregon State. Both Utah and Boise are ranked higher than TCU and in all the major polls a 'non-Big 6 ' conference team (or two) is ranked in the top ten. Who really does deserve top 10 status? There really are about 6-8 teams that have shown themselves to be worthy of top ten status. Somebody has to fill it out. I'll take the **** Frogs until proven wrong, ha ha. Look at the top 25, how would yours look?
B: Two - three weeks ago many posters were saying I was crazy for underestimating Georgia and Ohio State. Now they both have 2 losses and are on the outside. I'll be the first to say I'm wrong my fair share of the time, but the PSU/ OSU game seemed to me to be a lot of poor execution mixed in with some good defense. No penalties is a great stat and I'd take it in any game my team played in a second, does it prove national championship worthiness, I don't believe so. During that game both teams seemed to be playing not to lose, I think a team that was at a higher talent level could have opened things up and not have had to rely on a turnover to make the deciding score.
C: Would I choose a team with 1 loss over an undefeated big 6 conference team for the national championship game? Not a chance. If Penn State wins out they deserve to go, I just believe they'll lose that game. No major conference team should be penalized by their conference quality in any given year. Ohio State had every right to be in the last two title games. However... weak conferences are going to breed undefeated paper tigers until a playoff system is created. Almost every conference has sent a poor representative to the big show along the way.
D: I've said it before, I'm not sold on the Big 12 (where my Sooners reside). Until the bowl games we have to rely on what we've seen and read to speculate about how they'll fare against each other. And it'll stay that way until... (see playoff comment above). The offense is great in the conference but most of that offense has come against B grade early opponents and... against other Big 12 teams. The only way to make a judgement is to watch the games and estimate the relative skill of the players and execution. Texas and Texas Tech looked good. PSU and Ohio State looked like they struggled.
E. PSU is one of the teams I'm pushing for. If the Sooners can't win it all. Penn State and Texas Tech top my list. Just to set the record straight I don't think Oklahoma is ready for the national championship game, their defense is soft and if their running game was stuffed and they had to rely on passing alone they could start turning the ball over against a good defense. I'll feel better about their chances if they beat Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Anyway, thanks for the debate. I'll stick to my choices and yes, I'm insane for thinking so...

I like PSU and as long as they are undefeated, I agree they should go to the Big Game. But I saw the balloon balls that were floated out there by the OSU QB Terrelle Pryor, and I bet every DB in the SEC was salivating. Yet none of those airballs were picked off by the PSU defense. Speed kills, and in this case, lack of speed is going to get Penn State killed if they go up against the Big 12 or the SEC in January.
