Our NHL game tonight on Versus, brings out an ambivalent feeling in me.
True, it is the Capitals hosting the Lightning. While I'm sure most people will watch for the novelty that is Barry Melrose behind the Tampa Bay bench, the game also marks the return to the nation's capital of Olie Kolzig. Wearing a Lightning jersey.
It is a cold-hearted business after all. Still, it does bring back the memory of how Olie was shown the door after damn near 20 years he gave to this Caps franchise. He could've asked for (and gotten) a front-office gig, or at least something in the organization...even a goalie coach.
But he felt he had something left in the tank, and I don't blame him for that. Problem is, he had 25 other teams in the NHL he could've gone to...just not any other team in the Southeast Division.
No, he decides he wants to go to Tampa Bay. That's like trying to picture Sonny Jurgensen in a Cowturd uniform. Blasphemy. Suiting up for (perhaps) the most hated rival the Caps have in the division?? You can't despise George McPhee and Ted Leonsis THAT much, can you Olie??
Now, lest anyone think I'm gonna trash Olie, think again.
It's business; I understand that. My opinion of Olie NEVER will change. He was (and remains) the face of the Capitals--even though Alex Ovechkin is the face of now for the Caps. At any rate, the game should be interesting.
Oh, BTW, I love the story in the Sporting News on the "other" Alex...Semin...you know, the one leading the league in goals right now?? Yeah, THAT one.
