The Deep South's oldest rivalry resumes this weekend as Auburn hosts the Georgia Bulldogs for the Tigers final home game of the season. Georgia is coming off an unexpectedly dramatic victory at Kentucky, a game for which lineman Ben Jones earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors. Auburn won this past week as well - a 37-20 decision over UT Martin. In that game the Tigers Tristan Davis returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and for his effort he earned SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Auburn is only 5-5, however, and just 2-4 in the SEC - and they didn't exactly dominate UT Martin, either.
Coach Tommy Tuberville said, "It was good to get back in the win column. We didn't play that great. The sense of urgency was not there as much as it will be for the next couple of games. We didn't ask that of a lot of our players. We wanted to kind of let them out of it for a week and get them back mentally."
So that was Auburn's strategy for UT Martin - let the team zone out so they could be mentally prepared for Georgia.
Interesting, especially considering last week was Auburn's Homecoming.
Well, that feels like potentially good news for Georgia fans. "Zone out this week guys, because next week we play a real team." I think Georgia fans, for all they have been through this season, could be feeling a lot better about things after the Auburn and Tech games. We'll see.
