Remember last year when Gardner Webb came into Rupp Arena and beat the then 22nd ranked Wildcats by double digits? Well today the Cats had a horrible episode of Deja Vu. Kentucky struggled from the onset falling behind early, and by as much as 22 (36-14 13:32 first half). Kentucky narrowed the margin but could never get the deficit to under 10 until 9:18 left in the second half. With just under five minutes to play Ramon Harris made a lay-up, and Kentucky took a 2 point lead. It seemed then that the Wildcats would put away the pesky Keydets for good, but VMI responded with 5 quick points. At this point they would not lose the lead and hung on to spoil yet another home opener for the Wildcats, 111-103. The overwhelming theme for the game would have to have been lack of defense, Kentucky kept giving up open shots to a VMI that specializes in shooting the three. On the other hand VMI continued to deploy full court pressure even though Kentucky had no trouble breaking the press and getting easy lay-ups at the other end. Kentucky dominated the boards but Patrick Patterson had just 8 points. For Kentucky there is simply no excuse for giving up 111 points to VMI. VMI has been one of the highest scoring teams in the country year in and year out, but the Keydets did not have the man power or the size in seemed to hang with an SEC program, but VMI made 14 of 31 threes (45%) and got a combined 42 points from Chavis and Travis Holmes. Kentucky might have suffered their second most embarrassing loss ever (Gardner-Webb #1), but UK fans should not be calling for Billy Gillispie's head, yet.

VMI has been a very underrated team for a while now...had good seasons the last two years that I know of and they are in a competitive conference with George Mason and VCU.
