Cowboys' Gauntlet
Officially, the gauntlet begins for the Cowboys against their rivals, the Redskins. The Cowboys need to run a 7-game gauntlet in order to make the playoffs this year and secure at least 1 home game during the playoffs. We can probably win 5 of 7 and make the playoffs, but we will not host a playoff in Texas Stadium. Jerry Jones paid millions in signing bonuses and 3 million to an offensive coordinator who have yet to earn their bonuses. This is a good a time as any to start earning all those millions.
Keys to running the gauntlet are the following: no doubt that Romo can throw over 300 yards, but can he eliminate the turnovers that allows teams to remain in the game when they should be buried; if Flozell Adams can keep DEs from Romo with a broken hand; the return of Kozier the Left guard should solidify the rest of the O-line; Roy Williams needs to have an impact that takes double teams from T.O., frees up Witten even more, and remove the 8th defender in the box for Barber and F. Jones to have better production; the defensive front 7 need to make sacks and create havoc during 3rd downs when it matters the most; the secondary needs to be able to stay in their zones against the bunch formation in the red zone; special teams must not bring in the rear; penalties must be eliminated especially during 3rd downs that enable other teams to sustain their drives and prohibit ours from moving the ball; no more cake and ice cream from Coach Phillips; and each member of the organization needs to have a sense of urgency.
No more Super Bowl victory smiles after a regular season win until the actual Super Bowl is won. The time is now and there is no better time than the present to turn a season around. From the immortal words of Double A, "it's gut check time".

Good blog, however the same can be said about most teams.

This is a must win game for Dallas for a lot of reasons I won't get into, but in the division and in the conference they can not lose tomorrow night. If they do, I'll be watching the Celtics and counting the days to spring training because this will have been the most disappointing Cowboys season In my memory considering the talent level and expectations.

CCC, I totally agree and it will probably take me a long time to get over it. If we don't do well, I don't think that I will be able to even give my best to Coach Phillips at the San Angelo Football Clinic coming up this summer.

Capt. America, hopefully in a positive manner for my Cowboys.

Discipline is definitely an issue. Not just overall mental discipline - but specifically 3rd down discipline to execute the plays penalty free.
The Cowboys have found more ways to lose this year than they have any right too - The media coverage of Pacman and Romo's injury have overshadowed the others issues, but like you say, they have had problems in almost every aspect of the game.
There is no longer any excuse - They have the 'talent' to be dominant. And if it doesn't come together starting this weekend, it's been an absolute coaching failure.

The outcome of this game is irrelevent to how the Cowboys will do in the playoffs. Obviously, they will be on the road in the playoffs, and they will most likely lose. Playoffs or not, Cowboys 2008-09 season will have ultimately sucked. Sorry, but that is the total package.

Dallas needs it pass rushers Ellis and Ware to get to the QB, although Ware has 10 sacks i think, but that will help out the secondary alot. Romo needs to roll out of the pocket more like he used to do. He stands tall in the pocket which is good, but i think if he rolls out maybe even threatins to run alittle it might keep the defense guessing alittle bit more. I bet it will help out Barber more as well. Not to mention when Felix is better give him way more carries than just 8 or 10 a game, the guy is a stud and wicked fast.

Special teams were a joke last night. After the TD just before the half, the kick coverage was so bad ( and you think it would have been emphasized) to pin them deep. Never mind Folk cannot kick beyond the 5 yd line. What do they do but blow it, let them get the 3 points and momentum AND Dallas is NOT getting the second half kickoff. This mistake could have been a 10 pt turn as Skins were driving well and burned 6 minutes off the clock with opening drive.
Finally, in waning moments Grampa Wade will NOT kick the field goal as he has more confidence in a 4th and 2 than the ability of special teams to keep Skins from scoring on ensuing kickoff---YGTBSM. He made the right choice and I agreed at the time BUT to think you won't put points on the board b/c you are afraid to kick off. Sure to Devin Hester last year I get it but to be so wary in general.....? You don't go deep in this league without good to very good special teams.
Oh and the penalties? Dallas has a knack for timely "drive killers" as we call them at my house.

Totally agree! Is there a new NFL rule that doesn't allow Kickoff teams to break the return wedge?

Good blog TP! I will only disagree with a couple items in it. Roy Williams can only make an impact if they call his number more. So far his catch per dollar paid is way out of line and I don't think he's missed a throw yet!
Secondly the secondary needs to do LESS staying in their zones and more "manning up" like in Sundays game! Playing man totally caught Washington by surprise and actually made us look like we even had a secondary for a change! Everything else you said is on point and I totally agree!
