DraftAce College Football Week Twelve Review...
Game of the Week: Notre Dame 27, Navy 21
Truthfully, there wasn't a game of the week, but I guess I have to chose one anyway. Notre Dame ran away with this game early, but in the final minutes Navy decided to make it interesting. The Midshipmen trailed 27-7 in the 4th quarter, but put two late touchdowns on the board and recovered two onside kicks to get the ball back trailing 27-21. Notre Dame stepped up though, stopping Navy in the final minute to avoid losing to the Midshipmen in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1960-61.
Player of the Week: Case Keenum QB Houston
So much for Tulsa being the team to beat in Conference USA. On the shoulders of Case Keenum, Houston dropped 70 points on the Golden Hurricane, and now control their own destiny in the C-USA West division. Keenum threw for 6 touchdowns, 5 of which came in the first half, and added another rushing touchdown late in the game.
Disappointing Team of the Week: LSU Tigers
Ok, so they did come back to win, but the first half against Troy was quite possibly the ugliest half of football in LSU history. The defending national champs were trailing 31-3 at home against Troy - the same Troy Trojans that lost to Louisiana-Monroe two weeks ago. Jarrett Lee threw yet another interception that was returned for a touchdown - his 7th of the season! The Tigers have clearly mailed it in; the offseason can't come fast enough for LSU.
Draft Related Notes of the Week:
Vanderbilt cornerback D.J. Moore had a monster week, helping Vandy earn its 6th win, making them bowl-eligible for the first time since 1982. Moore, while playing his natural position of cornerback, intercepted two passes, including one in the final minutes which iced the game for the Commodores. Even more impressive, however, was the fact that the cornerback also led the team in receiving yards and caught 2 touchdown passes. The two touchdowns were his first two career receptions. That's right, Moore had 2 interceptions AND two touchdowns. Now scouts probably don't care much about his abilities on the offensive side of the ball, but his success on defense has made him a potential first rounder.
Rhett Bomar, the former Oklahoma quarterback, is tearing it up at Sam Houston State. Bomar threw for 504 yards on Saturday, the second highest total in school history. He also topped the 5,000 yard mark for his career, becoming the schools all-time leading passer. Bomar clearly still has all the skills that made him an elite prospect at Oklahoma, and NFL scouts are taking notice. Bomar could come off the board as early as the second round in April.
Cal-Poly wide receiver Ramses Barden caught two touchdown passes on Saturday giving him 15 on the season. More importantly, it was his 18th straight game with a touchdown reception breaking Jerry Rice's FCS record and tying Larry Fitzgerald's division one record. Barden will have a shot to break the record next week against Wisconsin.
Other Notes for the Week:
What mess the ACC is this year. Overall, the conference is better than I expected, but it is still as mediocre as a BCS conference could be. It's possible that everyone except Duke and N.C. State could be bowl eligible. Currently, Miami, Boston College and Maryland all control their own destiny in their respective divisions (Maryland and B.C. face off in on November 29), but Wake Forest, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Virginia and North Carolina are all still alive in the hunt for a trip to the ACC Championship Game.
The Big East isn't much better. Fortunately we don't have to suffer through an actual Big East title game, but there are some very meaningful games left to be played. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh both control their own destiny and face off next weekend. If Cincinnati wins, the Big East is essentially theirs; all they would have to do is defeat Syracuse in their Big East finale. If Pitt wins, the Backyard Brawl becomes the de facto title game between arch rivals Pittsburgh and West Virginia.
