Here is Totally conclusive proof as to why Derek Jeter shouldve won the MVP in 2006 and why Dustin Pedroia shouldnt have won the 2008 MVP.  Their stats are listed below. Who do you think deserved the award more?

G     AB    R     H    2B  3B  HR  RBI  BB  SB  SO    AVG  OBP  OPS  SLG

Derek Jeter-   154,  623, 118, 214, 39,  3,   14,  97,  69,  34, 102,  .343, .417, .900,  .483

D. Pedroia-     157,  653, 118, 213, 54,  2,   17,  83,  50,  20,   52,  .326, .376, .869,  .493

Jeter beat Pedroia in 8 of 13 stats (not including games, at bats) despite having played 3 less games. And he didn't win the MVP!

Pedroia beat Jeter in 4 stats, 2B, HR, SO, and SLG%

-Jeter had more hits, triples, RBI's, walks, steals, a higher average, OBP, and OPS,(they both also had the same amount of runs 118)

If anyone wants to argue that ESPN and other networks whose writers vote for the award are the unofficial broadcasting networks of the Boston Red Sox, I think that this is perfect evidence, for Pedroia to win the award and Jeter not to is total BS. Unbelievable

You can't effectively compare MVP candidacy with stats of two players from different seasons, that makes no sense. Yes, Jeter put up a great season, and yes, it was better than Pedroia's, but to successfully argue this you have to show who each player was competing with for the award. Jeter deserved it in '06 because he put up great numbers, especially 97 RBI as a #2 hitter, had a ridiculous batting average in clutch situations (like 2 out RISP), and he was the only consistent player on that team, never batting below .300 after early May, I believe. The best argument to make for any MVP discussion is to say, "Ok, so let's say I take this player off the team. How significantly is their game affected? If the team loses noticeably more often, then that player is the MVP of the team." It's simple as that, and I believe that Jeter was much more valuable to the Yankees than Morneau to the Twins two years ago. I also agree that Pedroia wasn't the most valuable player on Boston this season, as many writers have been saying.

I want to make this clean but can't help it. You're a moron. So what if Jeter's 2006 stats are better than Pedroia's 2008 stats. What's that got to do with 08 AL MVP? Is Jeter more valuable than Morneau in 06? No. Is Peddy more valuable than the rest in 08? Yes.

By the way, Ordonez 07 stats are way better than Jeter's 06 or anybody else's 08 stats. Shall we then award Mags the 07 MVP and don't give any award this year?

this shows that the MLBs system for choseing the MVP should be changed. The players should have the vote not the bais reporters

Great post, I was thinking of something along the same lines as this too. Speaking of awards and Yankees getting shafted, how about the 2005 Cy Young where Bartolo Colon beats out Mariano Rivera yet Mo gets more MVP votes. Additionally in 2003, after Nomo, Sasaki and Ichiro win ROY, people like Lou Pinella of all people start bitching about Matsui not being a "real rookie" and thus writers vote for Angel Berroa. And Posada could've taken home the MVP in 2003 or Shannon Stewart.

its alot more difficult to compare a #4 hitter (ordonez) to jeter and pedroia (both #2 hitters) my point for this blog was to proove how horrible these voters are! also if you remember 2006 was the year that the booing of Arod started. if you took jeter off that team they wouldve been in 3rd in the al east.

I also believe that youk shouldve won the MVP over pedroia.

hands down...jeters stats smoke pedroias. i think pedroia is good but all these idiots who compare him to jeter need to get their heads examined.

I do agree that the way the MVP is chosen needs to be assessed. But even though Jeter, who is my favorite player in baseball, had a better year in 2006 doesn't mean that that THE RED SUCKS are getting preferential treatment. Morneau had a little better season that Jeter in 2006 so he won it. I Don't think that Pedroia was the best player in the league this year, but he did stay consistent and helped his team win through the while Manny thing, which deserves some ADDA-BOYS.

There were 2 clear candidates in '06 and the voting was very close. Jeter and Morneau were both named in the Top 3 by 26 of 28 voters and it was 15-12 for Morneau for 1st place votes. This year, you can make a case for Morneau, Youk, Mauer, Quentin, even Lee (but not K-Rod imho) but Pedroia in majority of MVP voters (and in ESPN's own voting) has the edge.

I would have voted for Jeter in '06 and Youk this year but in both years, the voting wasn't horrible. If say it was 24-4 in 1st place votes either way in '06, then yes, that is horrible voting.

Lastly, your blog is about why Jeter should've won in 06 and why Pedroia shouldn't in 08. You should have compared Jeter's stats and value against candidates in 06 and compared Pedroia with '08 candidates and then argue why you came up with this conclusion. Comparing Jeter's 06 with Pedroia's 08 stats does not matter and does not make sense in answering who deserves (or not) the MVP in 06 and 08.

This is the dumbest post i've ever seen on here. What does it matter that Jeters stats in 2006 were better? In 20078 there was no clear cut MVP candidate. Pedroia's numbers and value were higher than Morneaus.

2ns you act as if its's a joke Pedroia won and that Jeters satst "kill" Pedroia's by saying he beats him in 9 categories. Pedroia had more extra base hits and half the K's. Jeter had the better year but was also in a more potent offense that didnt have the injury woes the Sox did.

On the note of biased for the Red Sox, thats the dumbest thing iver ever heard. The Yankees are topic of every network all the time. AROD farts and its on the news. There the two biggest msot popular franchises deal with it.

November 26, 2008  08:04 AM ET

And by the way all the writers absolutely love Jeter, dont act like theres biased against him....
