A NEW SYSTEM
Back in May I posted a blog that included my idea of how to fix the BCS. It encorporates a playoff into the Bowl System, keeps the BCS bowls, and helps better determine who the best college football team is. The BCP stands for, of course, Bowl Championship Playoff. All the details of this Bowl/Playoff system can be found by clicking the "BCP" link above. The link takes you to my original proposal of the BCP in my Blog on Fannation.com. If the link doesn't work, copy and paste this URL: http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/186519
If the BCP were introduced this season, this is how I believe things would shake out...
Qualifying for the BCP
In this system, ALL "Bowl Eligible" teams will play in the NON-BCS Bowls. The eligibility requirements would have to tweaked of course, because not all bowl eligibles(68 teams) will fit in the 29 non-BCS bowls. Thats for someone else to figure out. Maybe change the eligibility requirement to 7 wins for all teams.
After all the non-BCS bowls have been completed, the Top 6 teams in the rankings move to the BCP.(A team must win their bowl game to make it to the BCP. So, if a team ranked number one goes to the Cotton Bowl for instance and loses to a top 5 team and ends up ranked in the top 6, they will still be eliminated.)
Here are the teams I believe will qualify for the BCP.
#1: Florida, #2: Texas, #3: USC, #4: Oklahoma, #5: Boise State, #6 Texas Tech
Let me explain how I got to these 6 teams. In order: Florida will beat Alabama in the SEC championship game. They will then go on to beat Ohio State in the Capital One Bowl. After Oklahoma beats Tech, Texas will be in first in the Big-12 South, the will then beat Missouri in the BIG-12 championship game, and defeat Georgia in the Cotton Bowl. USC will win out the rest of their games, then in the Sun Bowl defeat Big-12 North Champ Missouri. Oklahoma will defeat Maryland in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Boise State will upset Miami in the Humanitarian Bowl, while Utah will be out of contention after losing to BYU this weekend. Texas Tech will take down Maryland in the Gator Bowl.
Other Notes: Penn State will lose to Michigan State this weekend, making Ohio State the Big-10 champs. OSU will take out Alabama in the Outback Bowl, finally ending their SEC drought. OSU will fall just short of the BCP, because of Boise State's undefeated record.
Bowl Championship Playoff
First Round-
Top 2 teams receive a Bye Week.
The matchups in the first round of the BCP, will be determined by which teams are seeded 3-6. For instance, in my projection for this season, USC(Pac-10) and Oklahoma(Big 12) are 3 and 4, therefore they will receive home games in the Rose Bowl(has a contract with the Pac-10) and Fiesta(has a contract with the Big 12).
Rose Bowl: USC vs. Texas Tech < Winner: Texas Tech
Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. Boise State < Winner: Oklahoma
Second Round-
The lowest remaining seed will play the #1 team.
Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. Texas Tech < Winner: Florida
Orange Bowl: Texas vs. Oklahoma < Winner: Oklahoma
National Championship Game
This year's National Championship Game will be played in Miami, FL.
So far, the only acceptable excuse I've heard against a playoff-like format is that team will have to play more games. In this system, the most extra games* a team would have to play is 3 and it's only possible for two teams to play 3 games. Most of the time only one would play three game and sometimes you may never have a team playing 3 extra games.
*Extra Games: more than they would play any other season and by season, I am including the bowl game they would play any other year. THerefore, the non-BCS bowl a BCP qualifier would've played, is not an extra game, because under the original BCS system they would've played a bowl game.
National Championship Game: Florida Gators vs. Oklahoma Sooners
National Champion - Florida Gators
QSN: I dont not like Florida. In fact, it's quite the opposite. The game is played in Florida so I assume Florida would have a bit of an advantage.
QSN - originally used by comedian Dwayne Perkins in his blogs, this little acronym means Quick Side Note. http://www.dwayneperkins.com/ Funny Guy, I'm sure you've heard of him. Always gotta throw something random into my blogs, so theres my government mandated random blog moment.

Gee... version 87 of an NCAAF playoff structure...
"So far, the only acceptable excuse I've heard against a playoff-like format is that team will have to play more games."
Either you haven't looked, or you are being very selective in what you consider to be an 'Acceptable' excuse.

Excuses:
The integrity of the regular season will be ruined. Not exceptable. The NFL season is the most popular in the nation and there are 16 games and you can afford to lose as many as 8 games and still make the playoffs. In my system, you would have to come out of the regualr season with at the most 2 or 3 losses and still realistically have a chance to make it to the BCP. Meaning, the regular season will still have a lot of weight.
Second Excuse: Longer season. This system doesn't have to extend the season at all. THe playoff is built into the Bowls. All bowls are kept and played on the same day they always would've been.
The third excuse would be the one I already brough up...teams possibly having to play as many as 17 games and thats not likely to happen. 14 or 15 would be the norm for teams that get into the BCP.
What are the other excuses of why there shouldnt be a playoff-like format?? If there are any I dont know about em. I understand there are a lot of arguements about 64 team and 32 team playoffs, but those are unrealistic concepts to begin with so any arguement against those are ridiculous before they even leave someone's mouth.
My system keeps everyone happy and as I've said probably too many times, the only problems anyone should have with it is that it MIGHT add as many as 3 games to a teams schedule. Big deal...

I like it. I've been telling my friends for years that if they incorporate the bowls and a playoff system together, it could be workable.
Possible downside: The travels that some teams would have to make. Granted, playing in a conference championship and a bowl game are already expensive, but if you were to add the games it would be more cost to schools. I don't think it would be an issue, but I don't handle the accounts of some schools.
Oh, and I think you'd have Tech beat OU. That's something to bet on ;)

The regular season is substantially diminished.
14 to 17 games is a lot for amateur athletes.
Now, if you really want a playoff, here is a starter list of reason there isn't a playoff which you never bothered to look up. Solve these and you will have something.

As for this specific format, i am really not concerned about version 87 of an NCAAF playoff structure which will never happen....

well your forgetting I said acceptable reasons...I'm not accepting reasons that have to do with money, logistics, or anything else that can be fixed with a little old fashioned work.
Also, you give me these statements and dont back them up. You say the regular season is substantially diminished under my system...how?? A team could still ill afford a loss if they want to be considered. Not only do you want to stay in the top 6 in the BCS, but you want to qualify for a Bowl game that will pit you against a good team, so that you can maintain or increase your standing after the initial bowls are played. Each week would a have a huge impact just as it does now. Take Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma for instance: If Texas Tech loses they still have a shot at an NC this year. Under my system, they of course still would too. If Oklahoma loses this week their championship odds would be almost impossible so a lot of people will watch right? sure, but under my system, people would still watch this game because its a great matchup and if OKlahoma were to lose under my system, they would still have a shot at the title, so all those OU fans that would otherwise throw in the towel and focus on Blake Griffin and the basketball team are still supporting and watching the football team instead. It has the opposite effect. its not diminished, its more exciting...theres more teams in contention, so each game will be more important. You just assume that the critics of a playoff are right in their assessment...try looking into your crystal ball and asking what will actually happen under my system.
Also, this blog you gave me a link to is excuses against system that arent as "suit" friendly. You seem to think I'm defending a playoff period. No, im supporting my system cause I feel its the only one that works for all paties involved.
No support...because there havent been any realistic ideas presented...this idea is realitic for eveyone. even financially and logistically youd have no problems, because the entire schedule is the exact same.
and the regular season is a playoff?? that is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. EVerytime I hear that I think how ignorant you have to be to say that. HAving sports writers, coaches, and computers tell me whos better is a playoff?? how exactly?? I see Texas Tech playing in conferences games and doing well, but I dont know how they stack up against a Big Ten or SEC defense...these are things that would be found out in a true playoff, the entire nation would be able to compete against each other to find out if this teams only good beacuse of their conference or because they actually have what it takes...

If your not concerned with my system then why are commenting about it...take your pessimism to England...

I figured you might like some feedback - without which you have 1 comment from a newbie while anyone who has doubl digit comments has chosen to ignore.
My bad. After this commment, the floor is all yours.
That blog is the reasons against a playoff by those who have a vote in its future and appies across the board. Fix those and you get a playoff. Don't nd maybe in a couple of weeks you can tweek this and come back with proposed format #88 for a playoff.
Side note:
You might be the 1st person in FN history to consider my comments too short.
