DraftAce College Football Week 13Review...
Game of the Week: Syracuse 24, Notre Dame 23
Ok, maybe it wasn't the most well played game of the week, but the result was certainly the most interesting. After suffering the most embarrassing defeat in school history, Charlie Weis is now firmly on the hot seat. A 2-8 team with a lame duck coach simply has no business winning in Notre Dame Stadium, but that's exactly what Greg Robinson and his Syracuse Orange did on Saturday. It was the first time Notre Dame had EVER lost to a team with 8 losses. To make matters worse for the Irish faithful, Syracuse's quarterback, Cameron Dantley, is the son of former Notre Dame basketball great Adrian Dantley. The loss drops Notre Dame to 6-5, and with USC and a bowl game left on the schedule the Irish could be looking at back-to-back losing seasons - which would almost certainly mean the end of the Charlie Weis-era.
Player of the Week: Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma
Sam Bradford was brilliant against Texas Tech, and likely takes over the lead in the Heisman race thanks to his performance. The redshirt sophomore threw for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns and did so on a season-low 19 pass attempts. With the win over Texas Tech Bradford has his Sooners right back in the mix for the national title.
Disappointing Team of the Week: North Carolina Tar Heels
Two weeks ago North Carolina controlled its own destiny in the ACC Coastal. After their blowout loss to in-state rival N.C. State the Tar Heels are now eliminated from contention for a trip to the ACC title game. It's been an impressive season for the Tar Heels, who are clearly headed in the right direction thanks to the guidance of Butch Davis. However, the past two weeks have been embarassing for UNC and the Tar Heels are going to enter 2009 with a major quarterback controversy with T.J. Yates, Cam Sexson and Mike Paulus all in the mix.
Draft Related Notes of the Week:
Pat White rushed for 200 yards against Louisville and became the all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks in FBS history. The three guys behind him on the list are Brad Smith, Antwaan Randle El and Josh Cribbs. Notice something in common between those three? They're all NFL wide receivers - and White will likely join them in 2009.
Tennessee defensive back Eric Berry caught his FBS-leading 7th interception of the season on Saturday. He is just a sophomore, and therefore ineligible for the draft, but to give you an idea of just how good he is, if he could enter the draft this year I would expect him to be a top ten selection.
Other Notes for the Week:
Justin Kahut nearly cost Oregon State a trip to the Rose Bowl, and then minutes later saved their season and their Rose Bowl dreams. After missing an extra point which would have tied the game, Kahut was given another shot with a 24-yard field goal as time expired. Now all Oregon State has to do is defeat rival Oregon at home next week to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl. Pardon me for not rooting for the Beavers though. It's a nice story, but do we really need to see a Penn State-Oregon State rematch? Ugh. Go Ducks!
Another unlikely team has put themselves in position to go to the BCS: Cincinnati. With their win over Pittsburgh, the Bearcats need just a victory at home over Syracuse next week to earn a trip to the BCS (and to earn their coach a likely trip to Knoxville to coach the Vols).
The ACC, meanwhile, is not so simple. Virginia Tech controls its own destiny to get to the conference title game, but Georgia Tech could still go if the Hokies lose to Virginia. On the other side of the conference, Boston College controls its own destiny if they defeat Maryland. If Maryland wins, it clinches a share of the division title, but Florida State would be the one to go to the ACC Championship Game.
