Don't get too worried just yet. Yes, the Sox have had a quiet offseason so far, their biggest move being that of Coco Crisp. However, sometimes, it's these little, under-the-radar moves that lead to the blockbusters. The decently publicized however not-so-meaningful deal of Crisp freed up a few million dollars that could all lead to something monumental, such as the signing of Derek Lowe or Mark Teixeira.
If you're asking my opinion, I say Boston doesn't end up signing Derek Lowe. I just can't see the fit when Scott Boras is asking for upwards of 15 million dollars a year for him. Paying this type of money for an average major league pitcher (however extremely durable), would almost wipe out their shot at signing Teixeira.
Although some others may disagree, I stick by my word from mid-2008, that bringing in Mark Teixeira is absolutely a priority for this ball club. Believe me, I'm well aware of Boston fan's affection for Mike Lowell. However, if they are as committed to winning as is believed, the love will be outweighed. Being fond of one baseball player only goes so far. Here are my reasons why:
1. Mike Lowell is 35, Mark Teixeira is 28.
2. Mark Teixeira is three times the overall ballplayer as Lowell.
3. Lowell is coming off a serious injury, and I'm not sold on him returning to form.
4. Tex would be around for a decade, wheras Lowell for another two years.
5. If David Ortiz doesn't return to his usual dominance, they would still have one of the best hitters in the game, along with an up-and-coming superstar in Lars Anderson (Portland, 21 years old)
6. Kevin Youkilis is capable of becoming a gold glove third baseman with time.
I could come up with a dozen more. I repeat, Boston signing Mark Teixeira is a top prority.

As a Red Sox fan myself I'd be happy to see Boston spend as much money as they have to in order to aquire Teixeira. I think we need just one more playmaker to win the WS.
