IF you couldn't tell, Bowl selection and BCS season is my favorite time of the year. I get to lay into noobs that have no idea what they are talking about on why I believe the BCS is good. But this time I do have a problem with it. It isn't something like in 2004 with Auburn, or like Michigan in 2006. This is worse.

Oklahoma vs. Texas: 45-35 Texas. The fourth quarter was all one sided (Texas).

Texas vs. Texas Tech. 39-33 TT. Texas lost on a miracle last second play in which the best WR in all the land had one of the greatest and clutch plays I have ever seen.

Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech. 65-21 Oklahoma. Blow out.

They are all 11-1. They all lost to one another. Texas Tech got blown out. So they shouldn't be in contention for the NC. Texas lost to a team that got blown out on the last play. So they shouldn't be. Oklahoma got rattled in a game which score does not reflect Oklahoma's playing.

But wait, look at the time of possesion from the Red River Rivalry. 37:10 for Texas, 22:50 for Oklahoma. Just my point.

Texas would have been undefeated if it wasn't for a last second play.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That was Colin Cowherd's point. This is mine.

  • If Oklahoma beats Missouri they will be in NC no doubt because Texas didn't play. Just like Michigan in 2006. Only if Mizzou can pull a great upset, will the Longhorns be in it. But wait a second.
  • Wasn't Penn St. going to the National Championship until they lost to Iowa? They lost to Iowa on a game winning field goal. Iowa is not that bad of a team too. They are 8-4. I realize that the Big 12 South and the Big 10 are way different this year, but they blew everybody out until Ohio St., but still won, and they barely lost to Iowa. They played good enough to be in the National Championship no doubt.
  • The very same applies to USC. They lost to a very good Beavers team, and is 10-1.
  • Florida lost to a very good Ole Miss team.

So although I am very against playoffs, if your team is one of these, I can understand. But what I can't understand is what is so bad about the Sugar, or the Fiesta, or the Orange?

Texas should be ahead of OU because Texas BEAT OU, period, end of statement.

December 1, 2008  09:24 PM ET

Someone commented that OU deserved to be ahead of UT. No way as Texas beat OU head to head AND on a neutral field. Again, Texas deserves to be ahead of OU. Yeah they lost to Texas Tech, but they lost on a last second play. They weren't destroyed like OU did to Texas Tech.

December 1, 2008  09:50 PM ET

Texas should be ahead of OU. Plain and simple.

The question is could we have a Texas and Oklahoma (assuming OU beats Mizzou) National Championship game if Florida beats Alabama?

It's possible but I doubt it because I would assume that Florida would leap frog Texas.

December 2, 2008  02:27 AM ET

"But what I can't understand is what is so bad about the Sugar, or the Fiesta, or the Orange?"

How dare you attempt to bring a healthy perspective of the game and the teams to FN.

haven't they drive home the point there is the NC Champ or...
...nothing but despair and disappointment for a year?

Texas did not lead against Texas Tech until less than two minutes were left in the game. Tech led UT 19-0 at one point, and 22-6 at the half. Only with 1:29 on the clock did Texas lead. I do not think that counts as "losing on a last-second play". If anything, Tech almost lost at the last second. UT was down the ENTIRE GAME. Don't overlook a team just because you think it was a fluke.

Tech beat OSU by 36 points, whereas Texas beat them by only 4 and OU by 20 (combimed 24).
Tech beat Kansas by 42 (at Kansas' homecoming game), while Texas and Oklahoma COMBINED beat Kansas by the same 42.
Yeah, Tech dropped the ball hard against OU, but Tech beat the snot out of almost everyone they played against. They aren't a fluke.

December 2, 2008  08:00 AM ET

the texas lead on tech came after a bogus offensive pass interference penalty ....with about 4 minutes left in the game when Tech was fixing to put the game away the yellow silk came out(texas secret weapon) and tech had 1st and goal from around the 25...that penalty was horrid..the ref should be fired.....texas had it and lost it...tech had it and it was ripped out of their hands.....3 way tie should go to Oklahoma , they should get the right to defend their title because texas couldnt hold on to it....Oklahoma got it back thru great play down the stretch.....there is plenty of bogus yellow silk left on the CottonBowl field for the texas fans to dry their eyes on..the fix was in and you still lost it.....the look on McCoy's face when Crabtree scored was PRICELESS!!!

December 2, 2008  11:10 AM ET

Texas Tech beat Texas head to head. They should be ahead of the longhorns.

December 2, 2008  12:27 PM ET

In the end it came down to the computers...which is what the BCS wants. I am completely okay with the OU selection over Texas due to this simple fact: If all three teams met on a neutral field today and played round robin the outcomes would most likely be as follows...Texas Tech 0-2, Texas 1-1, and OU 2-0...with the OU/Texas match up the only one up for discussion. Just my opinion. I think Tech is not a fluke by any means, I just dont think they could repeat their win against the Horns away from Lubbock nor do I think they avenge their loss against OU in Norman. Remember my alma mater (Baylor) was a mystery offsides call away from potentially winning the game against Tech last weekend...in Lubbock...lost by 7.

December 2, 2008  12:58 PM ET

astrosin07 you are funny.. you forget that Tech had the ball at the end of the game and ran out the clock.. Tech could have scored easily and won 42-28.. also that mystery offsides. was close.. just watch the cowboys play.. that is the Demarcus Ware call... he moves just as the ball moves and is called offsides about once a game... I feel for you Baylor fan but Tech would have won anyway. or worse. may have tied and went into overtime.. where I say Tech would have won anyway.. just ask NEbraska.

also UT fans.. Tech won on the so called last second play by crabtree.. but you forget if the play had been out of bounds or dropped Tech does have a field goal kicker.. he could have easily made a kick from the 10 or 14 yard line.. and if the ball had been dropped Tech was in range and odds are Carona would have made the kick.. sure chance he would have missed it to but only wide right or left. he has plenty of range... UT your defense dropped the interception.. shame shame.

OU fans. well your number 5 should have been kicked out of the game.. hitting out of bounds..horse collars, blaten horse collar.. it was called but you could tell he did not care.. he should have been booted... yep Tech would have still lost but OU fans your team better not choke this year in the bowl.. or big 12 final.. you don't deserve to be in the big 12 final until you win.. then I will support you.. then you don't deserve to be in the NC till you win. .then I will support you.... no more excuses OU.. you better win.. now is your chance to silence your critics..

as far as BCS.. it is BS.. but then again .. take the top 16 or even 32 teams.. have a playoff.. the last two play in the BCS final as they do now... the others play in bowls.. as they do now.. so easy to do.. and not that big of a deal.. it would silence everyone.. get on the band wagon and lets make it happen.....

Guess OU shouldve just lost to Tech then. That way UT fans never would've been able to whine about the OU UT game. But you said it yourself, the only team to beat UT got blown out by OU. Guess Hooked Horns logic misplaced that one though, you know, when nothing else matters aside from 45-35! Finish the season with your heads up horns, quit whining about the outcome and make your case next season.

"the fourth quarter was all one sided" didn't know we just count the fourth quarter, and Crabtree is all anyone remembers from the 4th quarter

As I've said repeatedly, OU deserves it over Texas. The head-to-head argument is absurd and any attempt to discard Tech from the three-way tie is just as ridiculous.

The arguments I've seen in favor of Texas would send shivers up the spine of any logical person.

Please- I know you Longhorn fans are disappointed. But don't be blind homers.

December 3, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Texas lost late ..they should have fallen farther back in the polls ...end of statement ....you lose early you have a chance .....you lose late your out !!!! bye bye texas! there is plenty of yellow silk littering the cottonbowl field to dry your tears on ....bring back logical progression ....a team in front of you loses you move up one slot ....several teams lose, you move up that many slots..............you dont lose then you dont drop....stop all the ranking crap that went on this year.....fit the losing teams in behind the unbeaten and one loss teams. That will cut down on the bs

This strengthens the argument for Texas:

Texas was down multiple times on the road, with 4 key players injured, and Colt still managed to come back and get a lead in the 4th.

What did OU do once they lost the lead in the 4th? Oh yeah, Bradford choked on 3 straight 4th quarter drives.

TEXAS fought that thing out without a ton of players and still almost won.

Don't forget the dropped INT!

how can you forget butterfingers .....texas choked late ....bye bye texas....back of the line.....

IT'S VERY SIMPLE:

Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma all have the same record and are 1-1 against each other. The only way to decide is who had the tougher schedule, and that is Oklahoma.

TA-DA!

That is why they need a playoff, because right now it's based on a popularity contest.

Oklahoma is the winner, Texas is the winer, and Texas Tech is the one getting screwed.

Ehh most SOS polls you look at have Texas and OU very close together with Tech clearly out of the equation...in the SOS argument. Texas got hosed, Tech got hosed, but OU deserved to go...horrible position to be in and there in lies the problem. The problem is not that OU got the opp to play Mizzou over the other two bc I think OU deserved it as much as Texas did, its that the BCS decided the outcome whether it be indirect or not. Texas will be sitting at home watching the Big 12 title game knowing that they beat both teams...one of them they throttled. If only FSU or Auburn could have pulled an upset last week, there might have been a rematch...damn
