Many people seem to have this view stuck in their heads:

Romo is good, but in crunch time he melts.

Manning is ok, but steps it up big time in crunch time.

Now while this may be true to some extent, it is not nearly to the point that many people think.  Especially this year.  But before I get into those stats, I'll list some basic ones for the year.

Passer Rating:  Romo-103.2   Manning-91.3

Yards: Romo-2,559    Manning-2,624

TDs: Romo-21     Manning-19

INTs: Romo-8    Manning-8

Lets keep in mind that Romo missed 3 games with a broken pinkie.  So as known, Romo is having a better year so far.  But the argument seems to be that Manning owns Romo in the 4th quarter.  I wouldnt be so sure about that.

Eli Manning stats broken down into Quarters:

1st: 63/92   836 yds    9.1 y/a  6 TD 2 INT  PR: 109.7

2nd: 79/125   793 yds  6.3 y/a  5 TD  3 INT    PR: 84.5

3rd: 44/85  482 yds   5.7 y/a     4 TD  2 INT   PR: 74.7

4th: 38/59  430 yds    7.3 y/a     4 TD 1 INT  PR: 101.7

4th within 7: 28/41   335 yds   8.2 y/a   4 TD 1 INT   PR: 115.7

Ok, the stats dont lie right?  Eli Manning is a good QB in crunchtime, as the stats show.  Now on to Romo.

Tony Romo stats broken down into quarters

1st:  41/63   401 yds  8.0 y/a   3 TD  3 INT   PR: 85.5

2nd: 61/93  802 yds  8.6 y/a    7 TD 1 INT     PR: 113.3

3rd:  47/79    604 yds   7.6 y/a    5 TD 4 INT   PR: 83.5

4th: 43/63      652 yds  10.3 y/a   6 TD   0 INT   133.8

4th within 7: 27/39   440 yds   11.3 y/a   5 TD 0 INT

What's this?  Tony Romo hasnt thrown a 4th quarter interception all year?  He has better 4th quarter stats than Eli Manning?  How?  Romo is supposed to stink it up in clutch situations.  But wait, I even have more telling stats:

Manning stats when down 9-16 points:

47/84  521 yds  6.2 y/a  3 TD 2 INT   PR: 76.8

Romo when down 9-16 points:

61/97   794 yds   8.2 y/a  7 TD 3 INT  PR: 99.8

The stats clearly show that Romo has been better in 'crunch time' this year than Eli Manning.  Am I saying that Romo is a better clutch TD than Manning?  No, I'm not.  All I'm saying is that Romo is not horrible in the clutch like many people say, and the Cowboys arent automatically 'doomed' in the playoffs.

Hope everyone enjoyed the read.

These stats are meaningless. Look, I'm not debating Romo isn't a very good QB, he is a top 5 talent, but look at how his last two postseasons ended, the infamous bobbled snap, and tossing a pick into the endzone against the Giants backup cornerbacks. He has stumbled down the stretch in December and the playoffs the past two year, we'll see if anything changes starting this Sunday in a huge game with the Steelers

Great info... Romo did bobble the snap and that stinks, but there are a number of games where Romo has lit it up vs cost his team a win. The pick in the endzone was a situation where the Giants had 8 guys sitting in the endzone guarding the line....sorry, but not many QB's will find an open man and Romo was doing what he does best, squeeze the ball into tight spots.

Dallas has a sick schedule down the stretch and if Romo gets his team 2 wins out of those 4, they will make the playoffs and be a scary team to face...especially if 2 of those wins come vs NY or Pitt.

Being a Boys fan, I love these games coming up b/c they are going to see 4 of the toughest defenses in the league and if they do get in, it will be vs good talent and not a bunch of nobodies.

If stats were meaningless, then why do they keep them? Considering Romo wasn't even drafted speaks volumes right there. Eli was a #1 pick for crying out loud. How many times has Eli been booed before he finally got it together at the end of last year?
I think Romo and the 'Boys will do good. All this hubbub about 12 years w/o a playoff win, is just that...hubbub. Teams don't remain the same, nor do the coaches, so that's like comparing apples and oranges. 13-3 beats 5-11 any day. I will say this tho...the 'Boys need a better back up Qb for sure, and neither of what they have will do it. If they would have had a competent back up QB during that spell, chances are, their record would be a lot better.

Romo is a VERY good QB. He is calm in pressure situations and was leading the Cowboys down the field agains the Giants in the playoffs last year. He threw a desperation pass with time running out and is getting a ton of blame for a pick where other than threading the needle, there was very little bright side. Throwing short and the game would have ended. Throwing medium and the game would have ended. If it was a hail mary, he would have gotten less crap for it.

He's going to be fine and as long as the team plays well collectively by limiting penalities and mental mistakes, the team will play well.

Farve has throw passes that are ****!!! Tony's pick was on 4th down with little time on the clock with no timeouts remaining down by 4 against a prevent defense against a team that went to and won the super bowl. How is there any shame to this out come and why are people such morons.

The bobble sucked. But he almost got up and ran it in for a touch down, and it wouldn't have even been an issue if the spot wasn't changed after a booth review from a 1st down to a 4th down.

It's like people don't even watch the game.

I have this prepared rant because it annoys me each time someone trys to throw Romo under the bus.

Giants v. Cowboys 2008: Romo gets too much blame. In the game, he held the ball once too long and that lead to a sack when he could have easily have thrown the ball out of bounds, and then he threw the ball away while in the pocket and Barber wasn't close enough to the overthrown ball for it not to be called grounding. That's it, 2 mistakes. Technically 1 since Barber should have been in a different location.

The defense giving up a 70 yard drive in 47 second to include Jaque Reeves playing 10 yards off the ball, to the 15 yard penalty on a face mask during that drive, and piss pot poor tackling of Amani Toomer for a TD, and again on a punt return by 2 special teamers to set up the Giants in great field position, to Leonard davis hitting strahan while he was on the ground for a 15 yard penalty, to crayton dropping a first down ball at minimum and possible TD, to crayton easing up on a 3rd down play in the endzone at the end of the game, to an illegal formation play that negated a first down, to ineffective blocking that constantly had Tony Romo running away from 3 blockers when the defense sends 6 and there are 6 blockers.

The Cowboys didn't deserve to win because they played poorly, but it wasn't Romo's fault. For anyone to say it was, is just completely assinine.

Also, against the Seahawks... does anyone remember that Tony did a quick pass to Terry Glenn who slipped and then fumbled the ball which led to 2 points for the Seahawks and possession of the ball. And I'm trying to think, what was the margin of victory.... EXACTLY!

December 3, 2008  10:28 PM ET

Romo is obviously not as bad in the clutch as he is made out to be.

But, to earn true respect, a QB does need to show that he can step it up come playoff time. Romo hasn't done it yet, but given his short career, he still has plenty of time.

People used to called Peyton a choker for a few years until he finally broke though.

December 6, 2008  06:46 PM ET

I think fact YOu CLEARLY have yer head buried up Romo's A*s disqualifies you from this comparison. Eli has ALWAYS played well late in GAmes... Romo Has Not. Stats can be Misleading. In Baseball a guy with a 990 fielding percentage by your estimation is better than a guy with a 980 fielding percentage... Well, anyone who has a brain can tell you that that is a falicy. Maybe the guy with the 990 percentage does not get to alot of balls, so his percentage remains high, and the guy with the 980% does get to alot of balls but because he fields them in stretched out positions, he can't make strong throws to get outs. No, you ask me, i would rather have the guy who gets to everything than the guy who gets to nothing. Stats can be Misleading. There are three moments, two drives, and a game that define the difference between the two QBs

1. Less than a Minute to Play before the half in Dallas, in the Divisional Round of 07 playoffs, after Romo Marched the Cowboys down field on i think a 10 minute, 15 play TD drive for the Lead, Eli gets the ball and i think with 45 seconds on the clock runs the Giants down the Field for a TD.. IN 45 SECONDS! thats drive was HUGE! it put the Giants Right on Dallas' backside going into the second half with all the momentum

2. The Final Drive in the Superbowl to beat the Patriots, with everyone and their grandmother knowing they had to throw, he marches the giants down field for 7 points and lead

3. The NFC Title Game in Green Bay in -4 degrees, i know i was at that game and i thought i was going to DIE. And Eli Outpl;ayed, and Out toughed One of the Toughest QBs in NFL History.

THose Three instances illustrate the Difference Between the Two QBs.. When all heck is breaking loose around Manning is When he Plays his best.. Romo Has not had a moment like that in his short career, not one. And Like bill Parcells Says about Romo "Romo is a Good QB, but there are those guys who just have a knack for doing that one thing that you go WHAT WAS THAT?! and it costs you field position or the game occasionally"
