Jamie McCourt's recent comments about mulling whether to pay too much money for free agents or build extra baseball fields is hopefully, like she said, "rhetorical" and not describing the Dodgers intent this year.
Putting the best team possible on the field will be what makes the team successful, not how many community programs they are involved in. They are going to have to overpay for free agents, and hopefully they'll do a better job or have better luck than they did with Jason Schmidt and Andruw Jones.
It's fine and good that the Mc Courts wish to get involved in the community, especially after Mr. Compassion himself, Rupert Murdoch did almost nothing. But bottom line is, being a major-market franchise, they need to win, and part of that is getting in the spending wars with the Steinbrenners of the world.
They should go ahead and pull the trigger on a Jack Wilson trade, as long as the Pirates eat some of his salary, and don't want too many prospects. Hopefully they don't give up De Jesus for him. That will help solidify the sketchy middle infield defense they had last year. Furcal's bat, the few times he actually used it, will be missed, but not his defense. Chin-lung Hu has a fine glove, but looked totally clueless at the plate. He is not ready.
You know the free agent market is over-priced when Edgar Renteria gets 9 mil a year. Agree or disagree with Jamie's comments, it is understandable if they are a bit squeamish. If that over-the-hill, middle-of-the-road free agent is getting those kind of bucks, how much do you think the guys in their prime will get?

If the Dodgers want Jack Wilson, they should be prepared to give up Ivan DeJesus Jr. in the deal. If they acquire Wilson, of what use is DeJesus to them? They have two back-up caliber shortstops in Berroa, and Hu, and (hopefully), Wilson would be their shortstop for the next few years. It would be illogical for the Bucs to pay part of Wilson's contract, and settle for less than the Dodgers' best SS prospect.
