I started out on this project to see if there is a direct correlation to teams which are consistently bad or consistently good; and how they draft. I went into this search with the notion that teams are bad because they draft badly. Vice versa for good teams. Because I want to see how teams draft, I used the following criteria:
- I looked at the 20 year period between 1983 and 2003. My thinking is that it is too early to pass judgment on any draft class after 2003
- I looked to see what the player did WITH the team that drafted them
To determine the success of a team I used their overall winning percentage for that 20 year period. I was a bit surprised by what I learned about some teams. I then ranked them by their %.
I am going to drag this out over several blog entries because I am still putting together the data from my research. I am not going to post my data, just the results of it. (I do not want anyone stealing my hard work and exploit it in throwdowns). I will release it to those on my list of friends and if I think I can trust someone who asks to see it. I will say that I used common places such as NFL.com, databasefootball.com. It really isn't that difficult to put together the same data that I did, I just do not want to make it easy for people to do it.
Anyway, here is what my initial research as revealed:
The 5 worst teams over this period starting with the worst (based on winning %):
The 5 best teams starting with the best (based on winning %):
