We've all heard it. It's one of the all-time anthems. It's also one of the longest songs ever written. I am speaking, of course, of Don McLean's "American Pie". Sometime around the year 2000, the Locker Room, consisting of three hosts named Marc Stout, Willie B, and D-Mac, on 106.7 KBPI radio in Denver produced a series of songs about Denver sports. One of them was a parody of "American Pie" commemmorating Broncos history, specifically the old Mile High Stadium. It is called, "Bye, Bye Mile High", and it was sung by Mark Bradford. You can listen to the song here.

A long, long time ago
I can still remember
How Broncos Sunday made me smile
I knew if I had my chance
I could catch like Ed or Vance
And maybe I'd be famous for awhile
But then the news that made me shiver
They broke ground by the old Platte River
The voters paid to build it
Because Pat Bowlen willed it
I don't remember if I cried
When I saw the wrecking ball collide
But something touched me deep inside
The day the stadium died

Chorus

Bye, bye O Mile High
Drove my Chevy into Denver crankin' KBPI
The Barrel Man is drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Niners die
This'll be the day Niners die

Did you try the parkin' lot
Or did you give the neighborhood streets a shot
'Til the city told you no
Oh, do you believe in Super Bowls
And can Clarence Kay get off parole
And D-Mac taught me how to run real slow
Well I know that Reeves held Elway back
'Cause when Danny left he got on track
Rich Karlis kicked without shoes
And I dig that Orange and Blue
I was a die-hard face paintin' Bronco Buck
And Willie B partied by my pickup truck
And I just hope the game doesn't suck
The day the stadium dies
I started singin'

Chorus

Well, it began as the home of the Bears
But when the Broncos started playin' there
They changed it to Mile High
Well, Frank Tripucka had the strip-ed socks
Long before the built a luxury box
Or club level seats that no one wants to buy
John Ralston built the first winning rush
And Red Miller gave us the Orange Crush
Bob Martin had the play-by-play
On 85 KOA
Well they always had the greatest fans
And we loved the way Floyd Little ran
Let's have a beer in the old South Stands
The day the stadium dies
We'll be singin'

Chorus

Well, the Elway Era was the glory years
And when Reeves was fired we shed no tears
He couldn't win a Super Bowl
When Bowlen hired Mike Shanahan
And when we saw the way TD ran
We knew we'd see the Broncos on a roll
Well, the bathrooms there are pretty bad
And Stout on the sidelines was pretty sad
But the fans can stomp their feet
And opponents will get beat
So where the Bills got beat with old Jack Kemp
And where Rick Upchurch smoked some hemp
We'll all be a little ferklempt
The day the stadium dies
We'll be singin'

Chorus

I met a girl who was dressed like me
And I asked her where Steve Watson should be
She pointed to the Ring of Fame
Now they won't play there anymore
'Cause they built a new one right next door
And it looks nice
But it just won't be the same

In the stands the fans will scream
The players play and the coaches dream
But no bad words are spoken
As long as we beat Oakland
And the three men I admire today
Mac and TD, John Elway
I wish the could suit up and play
The day the stadium dies
We'll be singin'

Bye, bye oh Mile High
Drove my Chevy into Denver crankin' KBPI
The Barrel Man is drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Niners die

The old Mile High Stadium
