USC and Florida? BCS News: College Football Bowl Match up & Analysis by Jamestowncalif.com Sports The BCS The BCS is a far from perfect format for College Football to determine the #1 seed, but with the way the Bowls are structured this season, Which teams should be matched up with each other to find out who is really number one in College Football. Unlike in College Basketball, there is no tournament or brackets. The match ups are determined by the teams regular season play. In 2008, we have a very interesting stage for the top 8 teams for 4 bowl games, and in my opinion this post is to determine what I think which teams play in the Four Bowl Games. First and foremost, I don't think there is a team in college football that is as good as USC. USC is big, like LA's Pro team, but the critics are quick to point out that USC was defeated by Oregon St. 27-21 September 25 week three of the season. Sports Radio Personalities have been writing USC off for even being in the contention to be in the Final or Championship Bowl game. I don't think that in a Bowl game any of the teams in the top 8 can beat USC. USC is on another level, and teams once and a while have an off game. Fans expect perfection with USC, and anything less than a perfect game, whatever happened imperfect is what people will be talking about. Hey did you see that missed tackle in the 1st quarter, or how about the kicker missing 2 FG's in the first half against UCLA things like that? There is nobody that can beat USC in my opinion right now. Critics like to point out that the Pac 10 conference was not as strong as prior years or as good as other conferences this season. USC at times plays flawless football and overwhelming dominance and beating teams making it look easy. USC is 11-1 in 2008 ranked 5 according to the poll I am referencing to, yahoo.com. According to the poll, Texas is ranked #3 and Oklahoma #4. There seems to be a bias against USC for not going 12-0. The only 12-0 team in the top 8 is Utah at 12-0 ranked number 7 the Mountain West Champion. Television ratings and commercial sponsors money has and will have some influence on the match ups? Has any Network Producer come up with possible match ups, and fairness? Like I said before it would be nice to have a first round, then a Championship Bowl game, but right now it is BCS, four games, 8 teams. With #2 Florida defeating #1 Alabama Saturday 31-20, that gives Alabama the teams first loss. Does that mean because the way BCS has it, Alabama is out of the contention for the bowl game that will determine the #1 ranking for 2008? Now Florida is going to be ranked #1 most likely going in, but are they that good? Ya they beat a #1 seed, but it was a conference game. Florida's only loss this season was week 4 against Mississippi 31-30 September 27. Mississippi is an 8-4 team, 5-3 in conference and finished 2nd Southeastern. Alabama beat Mississippi 24-20. So although Florida is ranked 1 now, can they beat USC, or would USC beat them 45-13? The Bowl Match ups at times are bias against USC, and this season it seems that there is bias in my opinion, and already Florida a 11-1 team is the most likely to get the first bid of two at 11-1 to get to play in the Championship Bowl game whether it be Rose, Sugar, Orange, or Fiesta. Also you have Penn St. that is 11-1 and should also be evaluated to being one of the teams that get to play against a top seed and be in a real Championship game. Penn St. is ranked #6 at 11-1 the first place team in the Big 10 a very prestigious conference. The Nittany Lions almost had a perfect season, but lost by one point against Iowa late in the season 24-23 November 8th. I think that the win streak in itself for Penn St is remarkable. A USC/Penn St game in the Rose Bowl would be a great game, and the way originally the Rose was to be: Big 10 visiting Pac 10. We like those residences coming in and spending money in the local economy for that game after the parade. The Networks are reluctant to have that match up be for first place. The other conferences seem to be getting better treatment. There is more talk about how good they are in their conference and how not as good the other conferences are. Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Texas Tech are all good teams. Utah is undefeated so right there BCS is not perfect for one school with a 12-0 season. Texas lost to Texas Tech 39-33 week 11 at Texas Tech November 1. So Texas Tech is a strong and good football team beating Texas. Texas is ranked #3 at 11-1 first in the Big 12 in the South. Texas beat Oklahoma 45-35 October 11. Oklahoma goes 12-1 and finishes 1st in the Big 12 South. Oklahoma rolled and beat teams within the division badly running up the score in many games. Texas Tech was humiliated by Oklahoma 65-21 November 22. Texas Tech at the #8 seed are 11-1 also first in the Big 12 South. So with that game against Oklahoma, Texas Tech will not be considered in the final 8 to play in the Championship Bowl game. If Texas Tech beat Texas, where does that leave Texas? And if Oklahoma lost to Texas where does that leave Oklahoma? Every year this happens in College Football. A few years ago everyone wanted to change the format and do it the BCS way, but this season it is obvious that the format will not please everybody. Maybe have the games, and the winner of two Bowls play in a College Super Bowl? Many Experts, Radio and TV, and Commercials Sponsors peoples have thought of ways to change the BCS, but it has not happened yet. Mostly because of the school schedules and students in between Christmas and finals, and semester changes. The networks are making a lot of money, in the billions of dollars off the athletics in college sports. This is how I would like to see the bowl games. I don't think neither Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama are as good as USC, and I don't think Florida is that good either. USC is the best all around team, and any of the other seven I think would get beat by USC by at least 2 TD's. Penn St. would be the best match up or competition against USC I think. Others might disagree considering the fact that USC beat the Ohio St. 35-3 week two September 13. "The Ohio St." as they say their fans. Ya "the" Ohio State: T, H, E for the 3 points scored against USC. Penn St. beat Ohio St only by 7 points 13-6 October 25. So what would happen if the two matched up? On paper it looks like the comparison is USC better than Penn St. but with both teams at 11-1 that is why you have to play the game. If Penn St. beat USC, then that would be gratifying to being the Champions this season. If any team can beat USC, that is what makes a team number 1, but I don't think any of the other teams are just good enough to compete against USC although only beating UCLA 28-7. These are the fairest match ups in my opinion for the Bowl games. USC versus Florida in the Rose Bowl or Fiesta Bowl. Utah against Texas in the Rose Bowl or Fiesta. In the Orange Bowl Texas Tech versus Alabama, and in the Sugar Bowl Penn St. versus Oklahoma. Florida against USC, I'd like to see if Florida is really that good, or good enough to compete against USC. Let the teams play, and that will determine which team is the stand out #1 team, and being that Florida is now 1, I'd like to see USC beat Florida and run up the score. Florida/Penn St. would be a good game and match up in the Sugar Bowl possibly, but if Oklahoma has run up scores all season, wouldn't that be a good challenge for Penn St. playing Oklahoma. Then who would compete against USC? For Ratings the best game is USC/Florida. We will see if the networks peoples are doing there homework, and which sports writer agrees or disagrees or if anybody can come up with better match ups for the New Years Games. thank you all links www.Jamestowncalif.com Sports all rights reserved http://jamestownjupiter.com/ http://jamestowncalifornia.wordpress.com/
