Texas is not out!!!!

If Florida does not receive 2/3 of the #1 ranking in the USA Today/Coaches and Harris polls, the computers may not give the Gators the #2 slot in the BCS rankings.

If OU moves from #2 to #1, then the Gators better start saying their prayers, because it is very likely that OU and UT will play in a rematch of the Red River rivalry for the BCS title.

One thing is certain, OU will be in Miami!

Check out how the Sooners have built their program at www.SportsByTheNumbers.com with the University of Oklahoma: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports. Click on the Locker and see more OU video, audio, and text!!!!!!

There is no way the voters will put the Gators, who just convincingly beat the long standing #1 team in the nation, in a position where the computers could put Texas in the title game. Anyone who votes has surely run the numbers themselves and realize what must be done to ensure the preferable Florida vs. Oklahoma match up.

December 7, 2008  07:15 AM ET

But for arguments sake, that means that voters aren't voting for who they really think is No. 1, but rather who they think deserves to be in the title game. That means that the voting is tainted, just like the whole BCS system!

Let's think back a year or two. Ohio State #1, Michigan #2. Both teams undefeated going into the most watched rivalry on the planet. Michigan loses to the #1 team. Now we have 2 one-loss teams, Michigan loses to #1, Florida loses to an unranked team. ALL the commentaters go crazy, rooting for Florida to be #2 because, and I quote, "nobody wants to see that matchup again" The MOST watched rivalry game ON THE PLANET!!!, and NOBODY wants to see that again? History proves that Michigan should have stayed at number 2, but the hairspray group and the voters manipulated the system in order to get Florida into the Big Game. Sports by the Numbers is right, the system is tainted!! The voters will make sure Florida gets in, even though they say a team shouldn't be penalized for not playing. Now Texas has to sit on it's thumbs while Urban Meyer gets on tv and lobbys that his team is the greatest and deserve to be in the title game. The media isn't talking to Texas, they don't want the title game to be a rematch of any teams, unless it would be USC involved. They all seem to just LOVE USC!! Let's get this fixed. No more starting the season late just so this sort of thing can be a boost to your team at the end. Every team starts and finishes the same weeks so this doesn't happen. Have the conference play-offs, then take the top 8, and have a play-off. May the best team win. This takes the tainted voting system out of it and makes it just as fair as basketball, hockey, baseball, etc. Of course the powers that be won't go for this because they LIKE having the power to make things the way they want. And that's all I have to say about that!

If there should be a rematch it should Bama vs. Florida. But seriously to play for the national championship the team should be a conference champion. Therefore the only match up that makes sense is Florida vs. Oklahoma.

December 7, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Florida had one bad game vs. Ole Miss. USC and Penn State had the same misfortune. What about those guys? And really, look at what Boise State did to OU a couple of years ago. Utah is still undefeated as well. The Utes come from a Non-BCS conference, but really... are they that bad that an undefeated team doesn't deserve a shot at the title?

Let's look at #1 and #4 in the AP poll. Why is Florida now ranked ahead of Alabama? They both have one loss. In fact, Florida's loss is to an unranked team. So what gives? Oh yeah -- that's right, Florida beat Alabama on a neutral field!

So now lets look at #2 and #3. Two one-loss teams, yet UT beat OU on a neutral field! I can accept OU winning the Big12 because our rules for determining a tiebraker are stupid. But there is no reason why OU should be going to the title game. Unfortunately, that won't become obvious until the Sooners lay another national title egg like they did against USC and Ohio State. Heck, they couldn't even beat Boise St.!

Actually Mississippi is ranked, #20 in the AP, #24 in the Harris and #25 in the BCS. Florida completely outplayed them and lost that game on their own merit with the costly 3 fumbles. I'll give OleMiss credit though, they did stop Tebow on 4th and 1 at the end and also for blocking the XP that would of tied the game. All along I said OleMiss was much better than people were giving them credit for, when you look at their losses, they didn't lose by much; 2 to WF, 4 to Bama, 6 to Vandy and 7 to S. Carolina. Turnovers hurt them in the WF loss (fum and 2 int), in the Vandy loss (2 fum and 4 int), again to S. Car (2 fum, 1 int) and finally to Bama (1 fum and 2 int). Really can't play the "if" game because it's pointless, but just imagine if a few of those turnovers didn't happen, they could easily just be a 1 or 2 loss team. Not sure why nobody really wants to give them any credit, think mostly because most people outside the Southeast view Southerners as ignorant hicks.

See what happens in January, I'm not a Gator fan that will say the Gators are going to destroy Oklahoma or Oklahoma will not be able to move the ball (anyone that does is living in a dream world), but I do hope for another great game and a Florida W. All that will happen either way, Longhorn fans are going to cry foul, if the Sooners win they will all shout we won 45-35 over the Champs, if Florida wins they will shout we should of been there.

Round-robin playoffs are what is needed, a schedule of just 8 games all in conference (and maybe a conference championship as is played now), then the top 32 teams in the BCS standings meet up for a round-robin playoff, you lose 2 games you are OUT and finish off by playing the remaining 2 loss teams till you get to 12~13 games. The higher ranked team gets homefield till it comes down to say the final 8, then the BSC bowls can come into play. Eventually you will have your true #1. Every team can have an off day, as has been seen this season, but if you have 2 off days, well to me that just says you don't deserve to be crowned as champion. The eventual champion's season may extend to 16 games, but could be over in as little as 15 games, which would translate to just 1 or 2 more games than what is played now by real conferences that have a conference championship. Lil' 11 and Pac10 CHANGE YOUR WAYS already. For the Big10 fans imagine seeing OSU and PennSt battling again on a neutral field, it was already a really good 1st game. Anyways that is my wish, it will never happen most likely because those in charge are quite ignorant and only looking to line their own pockets.

A problem with how the top 2 teams are selected can be made an argument for modifyin the selection process, but not an argument to restructure the whole system.

The B12 situation shows part (though not all) of the drawbacks with a division format. Your example shows another. tOSU lost - I see no benefit to a rematch in which the result might be 1-1 rewarding the team with the easier path to 1-1 the conference title (tOSU would have lost at home, won in neutral location - isn't PSU more impressive in that record?)

There are a lot of arguments for a playoff. The need (or lack of need) to modify the selection criteria at the Conference, Division, or BCS level isn't 1 of them.

We wont get a play off , the powers that be are content with this ...best we might hope for is a plus one probably......the longhorns can cry ..the lost late....you lose late and your out...thats how its always been. it would be wrong to hold a team that loses late ahead of a team thats battled back. It would make battling back a waste and would have left Florida out too! the longhorns could have been there but the choked late and shouldnt be rewarded for that over teams like Florida, USC, and Oklahoma. OU has has some bad luck as of late but they stay in the mix because they are fundamentally sound (this years special teams notwithstandin....lol) so dont count them out ...and dont hold your breath for a playoff! It would be nice to have one tho!
