Once again the Ranger faithful have to endure another knee-jerk trade that leaves the rest of the league laughing and us scratching our heads.
I don't care what you say about this trade being in the "right direction" for the Rangers because the truth is we traded one of our most valuble trading chips for a AA pitcher with a history of shoulder problems and a 17 YEAR OLD who has never pitched in American baseball. It is hard to convince me that just because he can throw 95 mph in highschool that he'll be able to be effective with it at any other level. Nobody knows. He's probably over throwing and destroying his arm while he's young.
Regardless on how these "if's" we traded for pan out, our current farm system is FULL of "if's" and "will be's" that are still a season or two away from contributing to the big club.
This is the same trade that the Tigers offered the Angels for Mike Napoli and the Angels laughed at them. So they called the Rangers knowing full well they could get something for nothing.
What we said we were going to accomplish this offseason was trade our wealth of catching for "young, Major League ready arms" who can contribute to the big club.
Laird is certainly worth more than one pitcher who hasn't pitched past AA and another who isn't old enough to purchase tobacco. There was all kinds of talk about how so many clubs were trying for Laird. And we go with this.
Looks like another typical year in Arlington this season....and next season......and next....
