The Yankees have been looking at Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez this winter and they want to biuld up their lineup along with the pitching rotation. But they need pitching and they need to sign some big time pitchers before the 2009 season starts and the new stadium opens. They need long relief and they also need starting pitching. Mike Mussina has retired and Andy Pettitte might go to the Dodgers just to play for Joe Torre and with the Dodgers looking for CC Sabathia, they might be starting up a new generation of good National League teams. Phil Hughes was overloaded with injuries last season and will not have much success for the rest of his career. Ian Kennedy played terribly last year and the Yankees might have to trade him or release him before he makes the team worse. Joba Chamberlain going to the starting rotation was a good move but created injury for him. The Yankees need to rebuild the rotation and that will be the missing piece for the playoffs. They have lost Derek Lowe who might stay with either the Mets or the Astos but in the American League, his only hope is to get a deal with the Boston Red Sox. A.J. Burnett might be looking towards the Cardinals or the Braves but the Yankees are still in there and one of Burnett's representatives have been talking to the Yankees about a possible contract deal. If they do get CC and they need another guy, a good addition would be Randy Wolf or Oliver Perez who don't go for huge deals but they can pitch well. If they want to get hitting, they must go after Mark Teixeira because Manny Ramirez is leaning towards the Dodgers and they will get him to sign with them. Nick Swisher has been placed at first and if the Yankees get Teixeira, they will have to let go of Abreu and move Swisher to right field to make room for Teixeira at first base. Or if Bobby Abreu does decide to leave before Teixeira has been bought, then the Yankees must get him or if Bobby leaves after Teixeira is bought, then the Yankees have to move Swisher from first base to right field and put Richie Sexson who they first have to sign at first base. But the pitching is necessary and possibly three guys are needed to put this squad back together and make the postseason run again that they have to start. This is huge for the Yankees and a big part of the team strength. If they don't get pitching, they don't make the playoffs or have a winning record.
