Well its that time of the year again.  Snow falling everywhere north of the Georgia border, Christmas lights, Charlie Brown Christmas on TV and the New York Yankees buying countries.  Was anyone else surprised when it was announced that the Yanks had signed two players for a quarter billion this year?  250,000,000.00  Thats a little more like it.  Its really funny how little that number looks when you are talking about New York.  Lets put this in perspective.  The Yankess have committed more money to C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett over the next 5 years than the GNP of 99 countries.  Ok so what does that mean?  The GNP (Gross National Product) is the total value of goods and services produced within a nation in a particular year, plus income earned by its citizens, including income of its citizens living abroad, minus the income of its non-residents living in that country.  So what exactly does that mean?  Well, quite simply, the Steinbrenners could probably buy and sell half the world.

So this brings us to the next point.  The Yanks haven't won a world championship since 2000 and the guys they have gauranteed this amount of money too are good players but are they worth it?  Sabathia's post-season era screams A-Rod and Burnett hasn't been healthy his entire career yet he was given 5 years at the age of 32.

I know I will probably upset all the burroughs in New York outside of Queens or at least ruin some of the feel good vibe that is floating around Yankee-land but outside of dropping another hundred million or two the Yanks haven't done enough.  They still have holes to replace.  They had 80 or so million come off the books this year so there is still room to add a couple more all-stars to the lineup.

What do you think America?  Have they done enough?  And who is the next in pin-stripes?

Your GNP numbers are way off. Only 9 countries in the world have GNPs of less that 250 million a year - and they are tiniest islands.

(Even East Timor has a GNP of 459 million a year).

You might have been thinking 250 billion - not 250 millon.

The Yankees average what, four millions fans a year? with a wealthy yes network and loads of endorsement deals. I agree that it is a recipe for disaster if they try to plug in every hole with a massive long term deal, but to not spend the money that they have would be unacceptable.
