Look, we could all trash the Pro Bowl. I could sit here all day comparing Chad Pennington's numbers to Brett Favre's. I could speculate about if the Jets would be better off with Chad under center than Brett right now, but I am sure radio shows in the New York City area have already given this topic due treatment. I want to talk about my favorite story of the Pro Bowl roster announcement: Mario Williams as starter for the AFC.
I will admit to not knowing who the hell Williams was coming out of College. I will admit I thought the Houston Texans wanted the player it could sign before the draft, not the best one. The Texans even passed on Vince Young, a local legend, to take Williams. The Texans have looked very smart in taking Williams over the 2006 Rose Bowl Alums.
Williams is a great story. He makes the Pro Bowl after hearing so many say his selection was a mistake, that Young wanted to come home and Reggie Rush was a rare talent. Williams responded from a disappointing, injury-hampered first season to record 14 sacks in 2007 and 11 so far this year. He is quickly becoming the face of a Texans team that is finally forming an identity after those lean David Carr years.
Even though the Pro Bowl has some unworthy players comparatively, Williams is an excellent choice.
