Today is the Fourth of July. Obviously today is the most patriotic day in the American calender so it got me thinking. "What is the most patriotic thing one could do today?" What did I come up with? Burning a flag. Am I gonna go burn a flag today? No, no i'm not. However, if someone were to do that today (let's face it there's probably someone doing it) many would consider it "unpatriotic" and "treason." In my opinion, those people are wrong. I'm assuming i'm going to catch a lot of flack for this but I really do think that burning a flag is one of the most patriotic things an indiviudal could do. Why? Because the First Amendment says you can. Being patriotic isn't waving the biggest flag or saying "God Bless America" or "U.S.A!" the most and the loudest it's taking advantage of the rights you have. It's expressing your freedom in every way imaginable. It's telling the government you're mad as hell and you're not gonna take it anymore. Howard Zinn put it best--dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
Anyway, with that said, Happy Fourth of July everyone. I for one will be BBQing at the beach today and I hope you all are doing the same. Have a happy, safe, and responsible Fourth.
As a little extra, I guess I'll write a little something about two of my favorite American things.
1. The Constitution and the freedoms it gives us as a people. Usually, I'm not very ethnocentric but to me, this, along with the Declaration of Independence, are two of the most important documents in the history of the world. The Bill of Rights is truly revolutionary and I cherish it and will do so until I die.
2. Baseball. There is no game on this planet greater than baseball. For more thoughts about baseball, read my blog titled "I miss it."
Again, Happy Fourth of July, everyone.
