Georgetown's upset of previously unbeaten Connecticut made a statement that resounded throughout the Big East, and the rest of the nation: No team is safe, regardless of rankings.

Supposedly the younger, more inexperienced team, Georgetown looked more confident and, quite frankly, more talented throughout the game. Whether it was jumping out to an early 18-3 lead, or staving off the Huskies after they cut the lead to 3 in the second half, the Hoyas simply showed more poise than the Huskies. And with their 74-63 win over Connecticut, the Hoyas sent a message to everyone in the Big East.

Was there really a favorite to win the conference? The Big East features eight teams currently ranked in the top 25, with West Virginia on the brink of entering the poll as well. The conference is undoubtedly the most competitive from top to bottom in the country (though that is a different debate altogether). And no team, regardless of ranking, can assume a win in any circumstance, as the Hoyas' win showed.

Georgetown's road victory over an extremely talented UConn team showed that they could run with the best of them. But their next two games are against unbeaten #3 Pittsburgh and at #7 Notre Dame, so there is no time to enjoy thier upset for the young Hoyas. By the end of this stretch, the Hoyas could be 1-2 in the conference and looking up at Pittsburgh just like the rest of the teams will be.

The Hoyas win sent a big message to the rest of the Big East, both in games against Georgetown and in other league games: no game is a guaranteed win, and no team is above the rest in the conference. With eight ranked teams, and all but one with winning records (South Florida, at 5-7) heading into conference play, don't expect the Big East to get any easier. Expect every game to be a fight to the finish, and which ever team escapes the carnage on top might well end up being the national champion.
