So it has been a week since the firings of GM Phil Savage and head coach Romeo Crennel. In a week there have been interviews, cancelled interviews, and indecision. Bill Cowher was Lerners first choice, and said no thanks. Pioli was interviewed and supposedly given a timeline to accept the GM position and no decision. McDaniels, Tucker, Spagnuolo, and Mangini all interviewed. More interviews are also in the works for the upcoming week.
Wasn't Pioli a lock for the position after Cowher said no? If so, why hasn't he accepted the job yet? Not enough money or power? What's the deal? It looks like Lerners search might have gotten harder especially since McKay cancelled and now doesn't appear interested. Pioli obviously isn't the lock at GM that Lerner thought.
So what's plan D? Plan C was McKay and plans A (Cowher) and B (Pioli) appear to be lost as well. What next? How about Shannahan or Schottenheimer as GM candidates? Maybe Lerner should go back to Cowher and offer him $15 million with ultimate say so and power. It looks like the Cleveland Browns are yet again a destination that no respected NFL person wants to come to, and offering a "Butch Davis like" deal may be the only way to get anyone to run this team. Word has gotten out in the NFL that the Browns are a team with no direction and identity, just like their owner. It is time to face your fears Lerner and get in front of the camera to address one of the most loyal fan bases in the NFL on the state of the Cleveland Browns.
