Here is a short list of the top prospects the Browns should be considering at the #5 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft (if they don't trade it away for more picks which is what I personally want them to do based on past high first round busts).
(In no particular order.)
Option 1 - Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech. This guy might be the type of playmaker at WR the Browns were hoping that Braylon Edwards would have been. Seattle will probably take him at #4 though.
Option 2 - Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, THE Ohio State. If he decides to come out to the NFL early, the Browns cannot pass him up especially since Jamal Lewis' "tiptoeing" style of running the ball is not cutting it anymore. Wells can easily be the next Adrian Peterson-type of RB in the NFL.
Option 3 - Malcom Jenkins, CB, THE Ohio State. Eric Wright is a ball hawk but still learning how to play against NFL WRs. He is many steps above and beyond where Brandon McDonald is at. Pick Jenkins and he might be the shutdown corner opposite of Wright that the Browns defense needs.
Option 4 - Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas. Pure pass rushing talent is needed on the Browns defense. Shaun Rogers led the team with 4.5 sacks....and that's it. A guy with that "hunger to eat the QB" is needed and Orakpo might just be that guy.
Option 5 - Trade the #5 pick and move down in the first round while also attaining more picks in other rounds. Savage traded too many drafts picks in the 2009 draft and the Browns need to get back into those missing rounds. Attaining picks in other rounds can also happen by possibly trading players like Derek Anderson (inconsistent), Kellen Winslow (body is falling apart), Braylon Edwards (ego and butterfingers), or even Kamerion Wimbley (draft bust). Trading these players will not get high picks, but at least the missing picks in the important later rounds.

i dont think wimbley is a bust he is not in the right position. what the browns need to do is go back to a 4-3 defense keep andre davis at middle linebacker move dqwell jackson to outside linebacker you have alex hall for the opposite side of jackson.then for the best part move wimbley to DE then you have shaun rodgers and corey williams at DT and draft Brian Orakpo from texas and that would give the browns one of the best front defensive lines in football.

Although the possibility of getting Micheal Crabtree is very exciting. I think the Browns need to go for Jenkins, Orakpo, or maybe even an Aaron Curry. There are still some dbs in the bottom half of the first round so if they could trade down and maybe get a Taylor Mays then you wouldn't have to worry about letting Sean Jones go. Ultimately I think they go defense eventhough it'd be nice to get a guy like Crabtree and trade away Edwards and or Winslow.

God could give the Browns the inside track on what moves to make in the draft and they would still muck it up. The Smothers brothers, Jerry Lewis and Carrot Top all would be able to make better picks. I'm picking another NFL team after being a Browns fan since 1964.

I agree with dchbrowns on going back to the 4-3 and moving Wimbley back to DE. The guy was a damned good DE at FSU, and I'm just not seeing more than a couple of moves from him at OLB. Call it an experiment that just didn't work and move on. Hopefully the new defensive coordinator will have the same idea. The 4-3 just seems the natural way to go here in the AFC North.

Wolf, you are amazing. Yet another Cleveland Fan wishlist full of hometown heros and "cant miss" playmakers. What they need to draft is all defense AFTER they make up their mind on what scheme to run, not before like they seem to do all to often. Draft/trade for players tht fit the scheme. Either way they go I say Ray Mauaga from USC...he is a run stopper, and for a team that has been last or next to last over the course of several seasons....the run is where they need to focus. NO MORE RECEIVERS!

Obviously you did not understand the blog because I included defensive players. Also, I guess you do not understand the draft, but when you are picking at #5 you pick the best player/talent available at that position at that time. You do not pick for your scheme that high in the draft, you pick the best talent. Finally, the reason I chose an option to trade the pick is so that you can pick for your teams scheme and gain more picks.
Oh yeah...your hometown heroes comment is dumb because Wells (if he comes out early) and Jenkins are easliy going to be top 5-10 picks in the draft. And Crabtree would be needed because did you see how thin the Browns are at WR this year (Steptoe started nuf said)? More talent and depth at WR is needed too and if he is available at #5 then you gotta go with him.

I fully understand the draft and I also understand we do not need any more receivers and nor do I think we need another running back. As big a fan of OSU, I really hope we do not draft Beanie. We have have Jamal and Harrison as a solid 2 back threat. Drafting the best player available with no plan is simply a recipe for disaster, just ask the Detroit Lions. Get a GM/Coach and install a scheme. See what players you have to fit said scheme and what holes you need to fill via the draft and free agency and go from there. We must quit drafting "playmakers" and draft football players. Living in the burgh, I see how an organization is ran successfully. Look at the Steelers past drafts. Woodley, Mendenhall, Timmons, Bennie Boy, and the Flyin Hawaiian. Hard nosed football players...not whiney playmakers who wish to speak their mind to the public. If it were up to me, I would trade DA and Winslow then cut Stallworth (he is always injured anyway). That will free up cap room to bring in some free agents so we can get a veteran back up for Brady and either an LB or a 3rd WR that will play more than 3 games a year.
