More at www.metscitiblog.com-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Last Tuesday, the Mets made their first offer to free agent Derek Lowe. He is their top priority for a free agent starter, with Oliver Perez next and Randy Wolf to an even lesser extent. This off-season has been a methodical one for the Mets and many teams in the MLB. They have been playing the market pretty effectively as opposed to letting the market play them. In offering Derek Lowe a 3 year deal for $36 million, they are treading on thin ice between owning the market and alienating a player they want to sign. There have been rumblings on several sites that this is an initial offer and the Mets are sure to go up from it. There are also whispers that the Lowe team is not happy with being offered a contract for less money that Seattle Mariner Carlos Silva. Silva was a 4 year-$48 million deal that has been a dump of a signing. However, Lowe is light years about Carlos Silva and it looks like he is trying to leverage a salary based on that deal. The problem for him is that the market is a lot different this year. I still believe there are other teams out there that will bid on Derek Lowe. The Cardinals may have money to spend as well as the Brewers, Giants, or even the White Sox if they trade Gavin Floyd to the Orioles for Brian Roberts. Without Gavin Floyd, they only have Mark Buerhle and John Danks left. Who else is going to pitch? This Derek Lowe signing just is not going to be as simple as it seems I think and what about the other offers they are supposedly making to Perez and Wolf? Methodical is one thing and when it gets to slow, other teams can slip in front of you. Omar, it may be time to get this done. How about a 3 year deal for $14 million a year-$42 million total and a fourth year option at $15 million? That is still quite a bit better that the market looked initially. Also, it gets Lowe more per year and an option to get a fourth year and finish his career in New York.
