Past and Present

There were some critics that were comparing Danny White to Tony Romo after the Cowboys lost to the Steelers, but the comparison is not an accurate one.  Romo's woes in December and the lack of a playoff win have been well documented and mentioned by various experts.  However, the comparison is not even close and not by a long shot.  If anything, White should be compared to Greg Norman or maybe Jim Kelly.

First, Danny White had the misfortune to become the Cowboys' quarterback after Roger Staubach, a legend.  This is already a no-win situation for him if White didn't win the Super Bowl.  White guided the Cowboys to three straight NFC championships that the Cowboys lost.  The Cowboys lost to the Eagles, 49ers, and the Redskins, and all of these losses were not blowouts or that White committed turnover after turnover that caused the Cowboys to lose these games.  None of these happened.  The Eagles had been climbing up the ladder to become a NFC east rival, the 49ers had just made a turnaround from 4-12 to 12-4 with Bill Walsh, and the Redskins took advantage of strike-shorten season.  Second, Danny White led the Cowboys to back to back 12-4 seasons and White even guided the Cowboys to a come-from-behind victory against the Falcons when the 49ers won the NFC and the Super Bowl.  Third, White had a great running game with Tony Dorsett and a great defense with Randy White, but he didn't have the same receivers that Romo currently has.  White had Drew Pearson, Tony Hill, Butch Johnson, and Doug Crosbie as his receivers.  While Romo has T.O., Roy Williams, Jason Witten, Patrick Crayton, Marcelus Bennett, and Miles Austin and two of his receivers are possible future Hall of Famers.  One can argue that Drew Pearson should be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Finally, White's Cowboys must have won at least two playoff games in order to get to the NFC championship.

In brief, White can be compared to Greg Norman because both of them had to follow a legend and losing three NFC championships in a row can be compared to Jim Kelly losing four Super Bowls in a row.  However, Romo cannot be compared to White because White at least won in the playoffs and Romo should instead be compared to Steve Peuller and Gary Hogeboom.

I was a fan of the Cowboys back in the Landry days.
I'm sure i'm alone in this, but taking "everything" into consideration, I would take White's recievers over Romo's.

Danny can always say he was a starter for a Super Bowl winning team.

I just read a great quote from Tom Landry. Ask yourself if it applies to Romo.

"Leadership is getting someone to do what they don't want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve. "

Great blog by the way TP.

You cant really compare anyone to Romo until Tony's career is over. He very well get some playoff victories like White did, sometime in the future.(As soon as they get rid of T.O. and get a good head coach. Wade Phillips is just a great D-Coordinator, but not a HC.)

Good Work. Cannot argue with you. Romo has a lot of years left, but to date he is not on the level of D. White. And , it is fair to say the NFC East was a stronger Division then, throw in the 49 ers, and the level of top quality teams was greater....

I remember watching those recievers play. Remember the hold out of Randy White. First time i learned what a hold out was. heheheehe

I agree Whites recievers may or may not have been better, but one thing that is for sure, I dont think they were as selfish.

I may be wrong as i was pretty young........34 now, i just dont remember the drama being around as much then.

I do remember the medicine balls that White would throw though!!!!!

There are a lot of people who look for any excuse to dump on the Cowboys. Calling Romo a bust or a failure is a ridiculous exageration. Despite some untimely mistakes this year, he still continued to put up good overall numbers and it was clear the team suffered greatly without him in the line-up. He still needs to mature as a QB but I would still take him before 3/4 of the QBs in the league.

Thats true 50year, not in the same class as Danny boy but we'll have to see how Romo is at full strength due to his pinky and back injury, I'm not defending Romo, just a matter of fact, but... your right other teams are getting stronger, and we'll see an even stronger 49er team next year.
