There is a story about a small town high school football team that was located in the outskirts of town. The town was surrounded by small farms and there was this farm house about fifty yards from the football field with a pond located between both the field and the farm house. There was a retired high school football coach who lived in the farmhouse and would always watch the team practice after school. This particular coach had led his football teams to six state championships during his heyday. The team would win about six games a year and all of the players were outstanding students and would never miss practice. One day, one of the players found out that the man who would always watch them practice had coached teams to six championships and decided to pay him a visit after practice while the coach would be watching practice beside the pond. The young player arrived and politely greeted the retired coach and the ol' coach politely returned the greeting. The young player explained that the most wins the team experienced were six even though each member of the team did their best and never missed a day of practice. Then, the player asked, "What or how did it take to win six state championships?" The Ol' coach grabbed the player from the shoulders and dipped his head under water and the player resisted and fought with every ounce of fiber in his body to get his head above water. The player punched, clawed and scratched to get his head from underneath the water. Finally, the Ol' coach released the player from the shoulders. The player asked, "Why did he do that to him when he came for advice?" Ol' Coach responded, "When your desire to get your head out of water to breathe air is the same as it is for winning that only then will you begin to win."
Seems that the desire is the only thing the Cowboys were lacking this past season because they obviously have the talent to win.

Pakage, let me throw another Landry quote at you.
"I don't believe in team motivation. I believe in getting a team prepared so it knows it will have the necessary confidence when it steps on a field and be prepared to play a good game."
I just don't think they are prepared properly week in and week out.

I definately think it was chemistry the Cowboys were lacking. The Yankees have shown us for the last 8 years that just assembling a bunch of talent doesnt guarantee you a championship.
You have to get a bunch of guys that are team players and want to work together, and I dont think the Cowboys players have that in them. They all want to be individual stars and mug for the cameras. In order to win in the big league you gotta have selfless guys who shine the credit on their teammates instead of throwing them under the bus. Talking to you T.O.
Great blog as always T-Pack.

Need to have the desire to function as one unit just like a motor. If one of the spark plugs is not working properly than the motor will not function at all.

It starts with the coaches, and the Cowboys are one of the worst coached teams in the NFL. From top to bottom. I am not a Cowboys fan, so it is my observation. There is not one player/position that got any better the last two seasons. DBs that constantly seem out of position, a QB that regresses from game to game, and on and on. You could say the RBs did better, but that is the easiest position to start from nothing in the game. Rookies run great all the time. In a word, if I was the owner, there is not ONE position coach I would keep. They must spend all their time " motivating" and not teaching....
The OL does not know who to block on blitzes?, silly penalties, Roy Williams is on the team nine weeks ( a full summer and pre season schedule) and does not know what routes to run?...That is all you need to know about what is wrong with the Cowboys...

It seemed to me this summer that some players DESIRE was self promotion and not so much on TEAMWORK! I believe the desire is still lacking a bit but until we start to play as a team we will struggle. We have a team of CHAMPIONS, but a CHAMPION TEAM will beat a team of champions everytime!

This whole team is a mess, I dont know where the problem begins but I'm sure it starts with Wade, after that who knows.

After Wade you can turn your head towards Garrett. Several players on the other team has stated that their offense was way to easy to read.

It's an interesting analogy - but I don't think it fully applies to the Cowboys. Desire was just one component they were missing.
Unlike baseball or basketball, talent can only carry you so far in football - There are so many people involved in football schemes that play-calling, timing, chemistry, etc are equally important factors as talent.
