As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Minnesota, a look of disappointment and anger engulfed the Viking sideline. This was not dissimilar to the feelings of Giants fans spread across the country who were left with boiled blood and concealed fears.
Never have two emotions gone on a collision course in fans brains so quickly in a game that their beloved team was not even playing in. It was the unstoppable force vs. the immoveable object...which emotion would win out?
Would it be the deep-rooted detestation of every name up and down the Eagles roster? Only made worse by knowing an arrogant grin was slowly spreading across the city of Philadelphia. A thought that makes us all grind our teeth and openly campaign for the chance to crush their dreams first hand.
After all, nothing would be more beautiful than to watch Brandon Jacobs steamroll Brian Dawkins on his way to the end zone, or Donovan McNabb sniffing smelling salts on the sideline after Justin Tuck introduced himself.
Best of all would perhaps be the stunned disbelief on Andy Reid's face. A man I hate as much for looking like a walrus as I do for his choosing to step aside while his family disintegrates.
Andy Reid's family has accumulated so many arrests that the Cowboys and Bengals rushed them in for a tryout. His sons were using and distributing so many narcotics that even Nate Newton was shocked.
Or...would it be the hidden trepidation locked away in the back of Giants fan's minds?...seeping out little by little every time Westbrook finds a seam or Eli is rushed by Trent Cole.
Familiarly breeds contempt. Yet at the same time, it creates a new dynamic which allows teams to know each others idiosyncrasies, as well as anticipate plays that non-divisional foes would be unprepared for.
It is this same familiarity that turns every single NFC East contest into a blood-soaked war, regardless of the records of each team. It is this same familiarity that allowed a confident Giants team to dismantle the heavily favored Cowboys just a year ago.
The Eagles soap opera goes something like this:
The local media calls for the head of a big name head coach rumored to have lost his locker room. This after the face of a franchise demonstrated horrendous decision-making on the field, leading to a steep midseason decline.
This same team puts it all together at the right time in the season's final game, to ride a wave of confidence into the playoffs (a confidence that would then carry them to a convincing road playoff victory, setting up a divisional rematch away from home).
Does any of this sound familiar? It should...because it's the same script that ended with Eli Manning taking a knee in Arizona as the Giants shocked the world.
It is a scenario that makes droplets of sweat bead down our foreheads, perhaps because it is so fresh in our own minds. We know how important momentum is, and how advantageous it can be to play a divisional opponent left rusty and cold off a bye week.
There are virtually no surprises, and no benefit of an extra week to prepare and engineer a complicated new game plan. Nine times out of ten all wrinkles have already been exposed during the two regular season matchups. These games were far too important to win, and no stone could have afforded to be left unturned.
This game will simply come down to execution. It will be decided by who wins the weekly "battle of the trenches."
If the Eagles run the ball more effectively, and disguise their blitz packages, they will be headed to the NFC Title game.
If the Giants' 3-headed rushing attack, which I now refer to as "Cerberus" (brush up on your Greek mythology), controls the game for four quarters, the G-Men will be on their way to a strong title defense.
Whether Giants fans are displaying a "BRING IT ON" or "why did it have to be Philly" approach heading into next Sunday's clash, try to embrace the challenge.
After all, if you could write the script of a repeat title run...would you have it any other way than to roll over the last two teams to beat you in the playoffs?
It could never compete with upsetting the Cowboys, Favre in a frigid Lambeau, and the undefeated ‘Brady Bunch'...but it's a start.

I admit that I would have preferred to play Arizona over Philly, but the flip side of the coin tells me that a Giants victory over the hated Eagles will help to make this year's run as sweet as last year's.
Protect Eli + Contain Westbrook = Giants Victory. We'll need to execute both parts of that formula to achieve the result.

Couldn't agree more...and if we win i would have wanted no other path to the NFC Title game than through Philly's heart...but it also would have been nice to sleepwalk through Arizona without worrying about it...haha

Wow, i thought only cowboys fans would sink low enough to attack another team's looks or family... I guess I was wrong. You all sound scared...I hope your team is as scared as your fans are. Then I know you will have no chance at winning. You know we have the best shot at beating you. Do you think you will have more than 211 yards of total offense or less? Peterson had 83 on 20 carries. I hope your team is ready. Your fans sure are a bunch of ****.

Peterson was injured 1st of all...and still averaged over 4 YPC and scored 2 TD's. He was able to do that on 1 leg even with Tavaris Jackson under center, the worst QB on any playoff team. He is not exactly the Superbowl MVP...who will be under center for the Giants actually...but you wouldn't know anything about winning Superbowls, because you never have.
The Eagles were able to completely key on the run, and the Vikes still had a VERY nice game. They rushed for nearly 150 yards as a team, which would put you 28th in the league if you repeated that performance every week. That is what the Browns avg. during the regular season.
Also, what kind of comment is "Do you think you will have more than 211 yards of total offense or less?" The Vikings had over 300 total yards, and we had over 400 against you in November, including 219 on the ground alone. That is like me asking if you think Westbrook will have less than 30 yards rushing again against us. It's a naive statement to make.
Of course we are nervous playing the Eagles, we know each other very well and you are a very solid football team. The problem is how ignorant Eagle fans are, heading right to profanity and name-calling instead of actual analysis.

i couldnt think of a better opponent to play, go right through the eagles and their ignorant fans en route to another super bowl run. funny how much the eagles fans are mouthing off after their less than impressive season, making the playoffs only after some shocking performances by the other playoff contenders and beating a terrible dallas team that should call themselves the dallas chokers. what is philly without westbrook? and this supposed stout defense that gave up 219 yards to our backs? shut down westbrook and pound their defense with our runs and this game is over. this game only gets the media attention because we are in the same division, any critic worth his salt knows the giants have a far superior team, with better players in almost every position. we wouldnt even be having this conversation if we had our star wideout who cant help but get in trouble but would destroy the eagles secondary on his off day. just be glad you have a small chance to win because that is the beauty of sports, even inferior opponents like yourselves have a shot at beating the super bowl champs.

G'men are tough, no doubt about it. They have a very very potent running game and offensive line. Without Burress though, their pass attack is not what it once was giving the Eagles a chance to put 8 in the box....Not withstanding the weather, I see a steady dose of running on both sides. Westbrook and Buckhalter will lead the attack with screens and play actions and Jacobs and Ward doing their best impersonation of thunder and lightning. I dont see too many gimmick plays in this game...it will simply be a battle of field position, time of possession, and who commits the fewest turnovers. Too close to call right now. Stay tuned.

I am well aware...i watched the game...but thank you for relaying the completely obvious.
Next time read my comment and try to figure out what it actually means before saying something back. I asked "what kind of comment is that?" because in November we ran for 219 and accumulated over 400 yards of offense, while holding Westbrook to 26 yards rushing.
My point was it is completely dumb to act like your defense has always shut us down when weeks earlier we scored 36 points and couldn't be stopped for 4 quarters. Each game unwravels in very different ways.

sounds alot like the "men" in blue's story last year i thought that giants fans of all people would know the power of getting hot at the right time. but hey we will let our players do the talking this weekend

i thought that fans of the "men" in blue would know the importance of getting hot at the right time. because if you want to talk about playing a team that has better players at every position all you have to look at is last years superbowl. but i guess you just like bashing fans for "mouthing off" when you are just as guilty. anyway i would love to argue the fact that your team has "better players in almost every position" but ill just let my team do the talking this weekend

If you read my article i spend virtually the entire last 1/3 of it saying exactly that...

Funny, neither the Giants fans nor the Eagles fans play in the game. That being the case, I guess it really doesnt matter who brags about what or who feels about what. Fans on both sides need to realize both teams are here b/c they did something right.

Both teams did something right and being an outside fan looking in, the Giants look very similar to Dallas last season...
Not only did you get the #1 seed, but the Giants December was rough, going 1-3 and the lone win was in OT at home.
Then Philly comes in, playing very well at the moment and had just beaten the GMen in recent weeks.
Without Plax, this team has come back to Earth quickly.
As the originator of this article wrote, its all about protecting Eli...period and end of story.
Philly is awesome at stopping the run, and if their blitz disrupts Eli, it will be game over b/c even though the Giants have great pass rushers, Philly's line and west coast style has all but elminated sacks against some serious sack masters in Ware and Allen in recent weeks.
It will be a good game and I think Philly wins a tight one 21-17.
Eitherway, we (Dallas) hate you both, but would like to keep the title in the NFC East for sure.

Maybe you should stay on the outside and just continue to look in. I can't believe everyone is tossing around that the Giants are 1-3 in their last 4 games without even mentioning the fact that they played their practice squad for half of the Minnesota game and still almost won. I'm sorry, but you can't really credit that game as a legitimate loss even though that's how it stands on paper. If the Giants played their starters the entire game, that outcome would've been different and no one would be talking about the Giants 2-2 December because they'd be on a 2 game winning streak over two NFC division winners. The fact is the Giants laid down for the last half of the Vikings game with interests of staying healthy...that's not a Giants fan's opinion, that's a fact!
With that said, please stop the comparisons between the Cowboys of last year and the Giants this year. The only similarities are that the Giants are the #1 seed playing a division foe at home. The similiarities end there. Our December wasn't nearly as bad as the Cowboys' was last year as I explained with our lay down game at Minn. Our team didn't decide to spend the week off in Cabo getting a tan, they stayed home and licked their wounds in preparation for another Super Bowl push. The Giants weren't playing well last year going into the playoffs, they needed a big running day from Bradshaw in Buffalo to secure a playoff spot and only started playing well in week 17 against the Pats. The Eagles are on a hot streak for the past 6 or 7 games which not only has them set up for a let down game, but is also taxing on the body and I'm sure they're not as fresh and rested as the Giants. Also, the Giants have Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning under center, at home, whereas the Cowboys had "I haven't won a meaningful game in my career" choke artist Tony Romo under center last year fresh off a trip with his man lover (Witten) to Cabo. This year's Giants are last years Super Bowl Champions, last year's Cowboys were 2006's choke artists. Please stop with the comparisons!
Lastly, Allen had 2 sacks against Philly last week...so what exactly do you mean when you say the Eagles eliminated sacks against the sack master Allen? And the Eagles have 1 sack on Eli this season, so protecting him doesn't seem like an issue. The outcome of this game is very simple, if the Giants stop Westbrook, they win. That's it...that's all they have to do. Take away Westbrook and the Eagles turn into the Seahawks. The Giants can afford to let Westbrook have an ok game, but if he erupts like he did last game, it'll be very tough to beat the Eagles. I personally think the Eagles have had a great late season run to get here, but they're going to run out of gas in the Meadowlands and fall short. Just like the Giants ran out of gas against the Eagles after a 7 game winning streak against tough opponents. That takes its toll and the Giants will be well rested.

Ummm...bonehead, Dallas was 1-3 last December as well, and almost beat the Skins while sitting their entire team in the 2nd half....sound familiar to the Giants/Vikes game?
Dallas ended the season at 13-3, won homefield, had a rough December and then got beat by a hot Giants team at home.
That is EXACTALLY what is happening to the Giants today...the rest of your argument doesnt even hold water...I actually stopped reading after you started saying they are not the same when in reality they are.
You had a star player down in Jacobs...ok...Dallas was without TO last year for the last 2 games, remember?
Your SuperBowl MVP has played bad when pressured, period and you will lose this weekend.
Watch painfully.

The Giants were playing horribly entering the playoffs last year, and a loss is being given all the credit to jumpstarting a Superbowl run. I see so reason why a win against the #2 seed Carolina in a pressure-packed game in week 16 isn't enough to jumpstart this team.
Also, i'm sorry, but especially as a Cowboys fan who hasn't seen his team win a playoff game in 12 years...any sentence starting with "Your Superbowl MVP" and ends with "you will lose this weekend" just holds absolutely no weight whatsoever.
The man beat the undefeated Pats by himself offensively, engineering 2 TD drives in the 4th quarter, and 1 of them occurring in the final minute. He has a big shiny ring and a new air of confidence around him. He has learned how to limit turnovers and progress through his reads.
The ability to call himself "Superbowl MVP" ends all discussion about Eli, and puts it all on the offensive and defensive lines as the key to the game.

Welp...I ended up being right and my comparisons to your season this year end up being dead on the same to Dallas a year ago.
The Boys went 13-3 and clinched the #1 seed while playing bad in December and then got beat by a hot division rival in NY.
The Gmen went 12-4 and clinched the #1 while playing rough in Dec and got beat by a hot division rival in Philly.
So, at this point both of our teams are out of the playoffs.
Take your shots at Dallas all you will, but this was about your team not mine.
Every Giant fan on the planet was blind coming into that game and are probably still blind today.
Bottom line, you NEED Plaxico or your dreams of SuperBowls will end as quick as the miracle God gave you a year ago.
