I'm not one of those who believes God cares much about our athletic competitions. The Tim Tebows of the the world who wear Bible verses in their eye black or give "all the glory to God" only impress me as being rather naive and shallow. There are souls dying of starvation and disease on this planet, men killing one another in endless wars. I think God has more important matters to attend to.
That said, occasionally something occurs which makes me believe God might just indeed be interested in our foolish diversions, if only from a sense of mischief and irony. The 2008 Fiesta Bowl turned out to be one of those occasions.
For weeks now we've been listening to Longhorn fans minimize their 39-33 loss to Texas Tech, how they "lost that game in the last minute". It was as if it wasn't really a loss, just a glitch in the proper order of things, a fluke. Texas should be handed the Big 12 South. After all, they beat Oklahoma. That Texas Tech thing, well, they lost that in the last minute.
They conveniently didn't mention that they were losing that game until a late rally put them ahead with a minute and a half to play. Just like the Fiesta Bowl, where Ohio State finally surged ahead with a couple of minutes left in the game. Needing a touchdown, the Longhorns scored the winning touchdown with ticks on the clock remaining, a receiver shaking off the tackle of the last defender--just like Texas Tech's Crabtree did against Texas.
The two games almost mirrored each other. Divine justice? Perhaps. But I'm curious: since the Texas Tech loss shouldn't really count since Texas lost it in the last minute, should a last minute win in the Fiesta Bowl count?
After the game, the Longhorns, who entered the game heavily favored and on a mission to blow out Ohio State to prove they were worthy of the national title, were already declaring themselves the best team in the land. After all, they beat Oklahoma.
Get in line. USC, who beat that same Ohio State team 35-3, Utah, who really is undefeated, no losses that don't count, should be ahead of the Horns, not to mention Florida and/or Oklahoma, which really are playing for the national championship. In that game, as opposed to a rivalry game back in October, beating Oklahoma really does determine the national title.

Are you seriously calling Tebow naive and shallow? Do you realize that he spends the majority of his free time making the world a better place (helping orphans, prisoners, etc)?

I'm calling anyone who wears their religion on their sleeve shallow. "Let not the left hand know what the right hand doeth". Or, "do not your alms before men...". Pharisees did a lot of good works, too.
That isn't to say Tebow isn't doing the right thing. He should do it less conspicuously, though.

BTW, are you seriously questioning my calling a twenty one year old kid--any twenty year old kid--naive and shallow?

Are you seriously calling Tebow shallow for thanking God with the same breath you quote the bible? Idiot...

Gee, Lifetime, what was it the Bible said about calling a man a fool? Or are you one of those literalists and believe "Idiot" isn't quite the same thing?

The thing you jackarses never seem to mention is the fact that the voters took Tech out of contention (top 5) when they lost to OU. The argument was that the voters put Tech out of the discussion and left only UT and OU. Texas beat OU hence the voters should have reacted the same and bolstered Texas into the Big 12 game. Did it happen? No. Would any real college fan like to twist any situation in their favor? Yes. You would be saying the same sheat had it happened to OU, **** hypocrite. So spare Fannation your garbage. We say 45-35 and all you have is the Tech game in which we narrowly lost to a better team that day, had nothing to do with the beat down you received in Dallas.
You are in the National Championship and yet OU fans still want to talk about Texas. Get off our jock and do your thing.

Agrippa,
"The thing you jackarses never seem to mention is the fact that the voters took Tech out of contention (top 5) when they lost to OU. The argument was that the voters put Tech out of the discussion and left only UT and OU."
The thing you jackarses don't seem to get is OU was selected ahead of Texas according to Big 12 rules, rules established before the season began. In a three way tie, someone was going to get the short stick. Personally I wish they had just flipped coins.
Why is it that Texas fans have faith in the voters when it comes to Texas Tech, but not when it comes to Texas? The polls were good enough to eliminate Texas Tech, but not good enough to discriminate between OU and Texas?
You are wrong about something else: I would not have said a damn thing if OU had beaten Texas then lost to Texas Tech while Texas beat Tech, and Texas had won the tiebreaker over OU. I understand the concept of a three way tie. I would have manned up, like your boy McCoy did, and said we should have taken care of our business.
You didn't beat us down in Dallas. Oklahoma had a five point lead in the fourth quarter, despite having lost the anchor of our defense to injury. Texas was the better team--that day. If OU and Texas played ten times this season, OU would have won six or seven. Overall we were the better team this year, not by much, but better. We've earned the right to play for the national title. It is unfortunate some teams get left out, but if you follow the logic of one team beating another trumps everything, then Ole Miss should be playing Thursday night, since they beat Florida. But then, who beat Ole Miss???
I know these are difficult concepts for a Longhorn to understand, but try. In any case, you might be surprised next year in the Red River Rivalry. Texas should have the better team, especially if Bradford leaves for the NFL. But the best team doesn't always win. They didn't this year in the Red River Rivalry.
Hell, you guys barely beat Ohio State, a team that got drubbed by Southern Cal. What makes you think you could play with Florida?

"The thing you jackarses don't seem to get is OU was selected ahead of Texas according to Big 12 rules, rules established before the season began." - This is understood. Whats your point? The rules was deffer to the BCS rankings. Why the **** would we lay down and say yeah OU deserves it over us? No, we are going to state our case to the voters as any real fan would. This whole blog is ignorant and hypocritical. You would argue the same sheat.
"Why is it that Texas fans have faith in the voters when it comes to Texas Tech, but not when it comes to Texas?" Are you serious? Are you that dense? Its because its our team genius and we played the season just as well as anyone else but Utah.So of course we are going to argue our case.

"Hell, you guys barely beat Ohio State, a team that got drubbed by Southern Cal. What makes you think you could play with Florida? " You are a complete moron. This statement contradicts everything you been saying. OU>Texas>Florida>Ole Miss>. It goes on and on. You are beatching about a team arguing thier case, which is petty.
Again STOP WORRYING ABOUT TEXAS... we are the 2nd winning-est program in college football history. Your school will never be ours, no matter how you try.
Go ahead and play the NC game. 45-35....you know whats up. Hope you dont choke like the last 4 years

Agrippa,
Careful there, pal, you are foaming at the mouth again. Since I am a "liar" and a "moron" I won't bother attempting to respond to your drivel--you've proven yourself incapable of intelligent dialog, and I've got better things to do with my time.
I'll be laughing about you Thursday night!

Joklahoma, your team better just focus on winning since all you do is choke like Reggie Miller in the big game i mean if you want to laugh Thursday just watch the Boise State game Joklahoma was suppose to win by a large margin, or the West Virginia game! Bob Stoopid calling for the onside kick? Mack is still your daddy! Hook'em!

Sorry about the name calling, clearly I was pissed and it was elementary. As a UT die hard, I'm tired of this soap box OU fans perpetuate with the intent clearly too agitate. You are full of your self if you think you would not be arguing the same thing if in our position. If we had SEC rules this is not a conversation. We would be in the NC game. We aren't...we let it go. OU fans seem to want to rub it in. Look, you can mention all you want about other games....head to head..45-35 you lost. Make whatever excuse you will. The better team wins.

OU is in the National Championship game, correct? So why must you write this blog and belittle Texas? Be glad OU is where they are, and keep your mouth shut about other teams.
