More at www.metscitiblog.com-------------------------------------------------------------------------Andrew Marchand of ESPN radio is reporting that the Mets will have a sit down with Scott Boras tomorrow in NYC. Boras is in town because of the Teixeira press conference today. Obviously, the topics of conversation will be Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez. Also, a possible topic could be Alex Cora. The veteran untility infielder has been on the Mets radar and I believe that Boras is his agent as well. It might not be discussed though as the market for Lowe and Perez is a lot more important at this time.
At this point, it is a crap shoot whether either pitcher ends up at Citi Field next year. With Boras, you never know. He somehow comes up with these teams to overbid the market on his players. There are supposedly about 5 or 6 teams that are on the periphery of the Derek Lowe talks. Braves, Brewers, Yankees, Red Sox, and a couple others seem to all be waiting in the wings. The Mets have drawn a line in the sand a bit with this offer. I have a hunch that the offer may go up slightly tomorrow, but I do not anticipate anything more that adding a vesting option for a 4th year or bumping the average salary up to $13-$14 million per.
As I stated in an earlier post, if they do not sign Lowe, it will cost them more to sign Perez. It won't necessarily be per year, but he will require more than a 3 year deal at his age (27 years old). I would expect that Boras will shoot for 5 or 6 years and end up with 4 years and an option for a 5th. I would love to hear that Minaya is trying to lock up both players simultaneously, but knowing the Mets, that will just not be the case.
I will have more regarding the meeting once there is any information tomorrow.
