More at www.metscitiblog.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------The Mets have met with Scott Boras and according to Matt Cerrone of the MetsBlog, the talks went well. Boras and Minaya seemed, according to sources, to meet on some common ground which sees a potential deal in the future. Between the Mets being virtually the last large-market team in the running for Derek Lowe and the fact that Lowe seems to want to pitch in Queens, there looks to be momentum headed in the right direction. Of course, Boras will continue to solicit every team in the league to try and suck out a bigger offer. However, I think as long as the Mets pony up a little more cash per year and add some type of 4th year option, they should be able to get a deal done.
Anthony DiComo of MLB.com adds to what Cerrone is saying and believes, according to his sources, that the Mets discussed Oliver Perez & Manny Ramirez as well. Also, possibly Alex Cora as well for the utility role.
Although it is being reported that Tim Redding received an offer from the Mets, don't look for Perez to get one unless Lowe goes elsewhere. It is my sense that Minaya and co. probably do not want to offer both of Boras' clients a contract at the same time so that one can be judged against the other. There are also reports that Randy Wolf will be getting a contract proposal soon too.
It seems like the hot stove is started to fire up for the Mets and the starting pitcher market. It will be interesting what the reports that come out tomorrow and Friday reveal. Look for the Mets to wait until next week probably before upping the offer to Lowe.
