Interview with 2010 DL 4-star prospect Ego Ferguson
January 7th, 2009 | High School Prospect
Most college coaches will be spending the next couple of weeks finalizing their 2009 recruiting classes. However, they have already begun making their wish lists for next years recruiting class. At the top of most coaches wish list is a 6′4″ 270 pound defensive lineman from Frederick, Maryland. That linemans name is Ego Ferguson. Ferguson attends a small private school in Frederick, St. John’s Prospect Hall. Although he comes from a small school Ferguson has gotten his name out on the recruiting trail nationwide and experts say he is one of the top 2010 prospects in the nation.
Ferguson currently holds scholarship offers from Boston College, Clemson, Connecticut, Duke, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina, N.C. State, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. Ferguson was gracious enough to do an interview with us here at Recruiting Scoop on what the recruiting process has been like.
How has the recruiting process been so far?
“The recruiting process is going pretty good so far, I am just focusing on my grades and staying modest.”
I see you have offers from pretty much every big time school in the country. How does that feel? A guy from a small private school in Frederick County with offers to Oklahoma, Nebraska, Illinois, and many other schools. That has to be a very humbling experience thinking about all the great players that have gone through those schools and onto incredible careers.
“Its really exciting to have that type of attention, I feel honored that they have that opinion of me. It just makes me want to work harder to live up to those types of expectation.”
What are you looking for most out of the school you will essentially choose?
“A combination of opportunity to compete early and a solid business program.”
Do you plan on attending any camps this summer?
“Yes, my father and I will be attending a few camps this summer. Some west coast schools, Florida, Boston College, Miami and some during the spring.”
St. Johns is more known for their basketball teams of the late 90’s with Jeff Capel, Damien Wilkins and so on, how does a guy from St. Johns get seen by so many big time colleges? Did you attend camps? Send out your video?
“First I would have to thank my father, Coach Tilghman from Roosevelt High in DC and Coach Ward. My father and Coach Tilghman took me to the Pittsburgh and Illinois camp during the summer and I really performed well. After that the word started to spread, Coach Ward followed up with a very aggressive southern trip which included schools like North Carolina, Wake Forest, Clemson, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. After that just mailing out DVDs and working closely with my father. I also won the defensive lineman MVP at the Shumann Underclassmen Combine.”
Is there any interest in going to a school that might allow you to play basketball as well?
“That’s a possible if I grow another 2-3 inches.”
Do you have anyone helping you make the decision? Coaches? family?
“My Dad”
Every Pee Wee football player wants to grow up and play D1 football. What advice would you give them on what it takes to get to where you are?
“Well I never played any Pee Wee football, this is only my third year playing football. I guess I would tell them to work hard, be respectful to their coaches and good things will come.
We want to thank Ego for taking to the time to do this interview with us and we will definitely be following him during the recruiting proces

Great to hear from such a well-spoken young man. It is apparent that he has his priorities in order, he is very respectful and modest, and has a good work ethic and upbringing. I and many, many others would love to see him become a Gamecock, where they have one of the better business programs in the nation and the international business program is consistently at or near the top!

This guy is just awesome! J.R. is a great person and was a huge influence on my son who had the benefit of working with J.R. at both a basketball and football camp this past summer. J.R. helped my child become not only a better player but also influenced my son to break out of his shell. Any school that is lucky enough to have J.R. play for them will be getting an outstanding player with a great attitude!
