So Mark Texiera signed with the Yankees. While most Red Sox fans may be upset, I'm determined to stay positive. Sure my thought on the latest spending of the New York Yankees is rediculous in such economic times, but I'm not completely dissapointed. Here are a three reasons to be happy about the Red Sox not signing Texiera:

 1. They don't have to trade Mike Lowell.

Lowell is such a professional. If I'm the Red Sox I love having a guy like this on my team. He's a good leader, a great baseball player in all aspects of the game, and most of all he's a great guy. I would feel incredibly guilty if the Red Sox traded this guy a year after he turned down money and years to remain in Boston. While Lowell is not as good a hitter as Texiera, never has been never will be, the Red Sox are a very good team if Lowell is healthy.

2. Not signing Texiera leaves more money for signing guys they need more.

Ever since not signing Texiera the Sox have signed Brad Penny, Josh Bard, Rocco Baldelli, and will very soon sign John Smoltz. These are low risk guys, like Bartolo Colon was last year, whom if they can be healthy can be great contributors to a Red Sox team that only missed the World Series by one game last year. I expect a good year in '09 where the Sox go deep into the playoffs, hopefully another World Series title.

3. The Red Sox run there franchise the right way.

The Sox have stayed away from big signings since Theo Epstein has taken over at GM. The only big signings they had came in the same offseason being JD Drew for 5 years $70 million and Daisuke Matsuzaka whom was signed for 6 years at only $52 million not including the $51 million they paid to the Seibu Lions. While the Yankees all but ignore their player development these days, the Sox have brought up great players like Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, among others. These guys will hopefully be around for a long time.

The way the Yankees run their franchise is lazy, ridiculous, and flat out stupid. You can't expect to put together a team full of guys who make more than $20 million a year. Egos will run wild in the middle of the season. I see something similar to what happened in Detroit last year happening in New York, especially after the only guy that could keep this team together, Joe Torre, was run out of town last year.

It is beyond me what the Steinbrenners are thinking.

did you post twice so that it would get through this guy's head tiosammy? a little harsh, he is just an unhappy sox fan whose team lost out on mark teixeira by ten million after the Yanks spent s@#t loads of money of sabathia and burnett. Should that have really happened to the sox. Hughes, Chamberlain, Gardner and Cabrera instead of Cameron, Cano instead Orlando Hudson, No Santana Trade, a bullpen with the exception of marte, is made up almost entirely of home grown guys. That's just recently, without taking into account Rivera, Pettitte, Jeter, and Posada.

The idea that it's better to have Mike Lowell than Tex is a little crazy - Lowell is clearly in decline. But the Red Sox still have a good team. The Yankees needed a first baseman and a bat, and they got the best one available - nothing wrong with that. I don't think Smoltz or Baldelli are good acquisitions though. Though I've always loved Smoltz, you're talking about a 40+ pitcher coming off major surgery and an outfielder who gets tired after 6 innings and can't play a whole series. Say what you want about the Yankees, but the 3 guys they signed are in the prime of their careers and are long term pieces of the team that will contribute for years along with the guys like Hughes, Cano, and Chamberlain. This will remain the best rivalry in sports for years to come.

Sounds to me like you are trying very hard to convince yourself the Red Sox don't need Teixeira. While the signing of Smoltz and Baldelli may quell the majority of Sox fans' disappointment in letting the Big One get away, I promise you the rest of the Red Sox "Nation" will be bitching and moaning at midseason.

The Red Sox have too many question marks for my liking.

- Will David Ortiz bounce back or have another louzy season like 2008
- Will Mike Lowell stay healthy?
- Will Josh Beckett stay healthy?
- Will Brad Penny stay healthy? If so, does he become affective?
- Will John Smoltz stay healthy? If so, does he become affective?
- Will Dice-K win another 18 games? If so, does he learn how to pitch more than 5 to 6 innings
- Will Dustin Pedoria have another MVP type season?
- Who is the Red Sox catcher?
- If Jason Varitex returns as catcher, will he have another terrible offensive year?
- Will Jacoby Elsbury bounce back after a below average year?
- If Mike Lowell is injured, who will play 3B? Kevin Youkilis? Who plays 1B? Lars Anderson? Will he be affective?

A few points to answer some of your questions
1. If Mike Lowell is still not healthy Youk will play third and Mark Kotsay, who just resigned with the Sox, will play first.
2. I don't see how a .280 BA 50 SB 22 doubles and 7 triples from Jacoby Ellsbury is a below average year. He also ended the season on a 16 game hit streak.
3. We don't need to rely on Brad Penny or John Smoltz because we have Dice-K, Jon Lester, and Josh Beckett as well as innings eater Tim Wakefield.
4. Dustin Pedroia has proven to be a consistent force in the Sox' lineup, which is a miracle considering the odds this guy has defied.
5. I don't see where else Varitek would go. He isn't nearly as valuable to any other team than he is to the Red Sox. It doesn't matter if he doesn't perform at the plate, the way he handles the pitching staff is incredible. not to mention the signing of Josh Bard will lighten the load on Tek an little bit.
6. The Sox don't have nearly as many question marks as the Yankees do

And you guys completely missed the point to this. It wasn't to make excuses as for why the Sox didn't sign Texiera, but a few reasons why it wasn't the end all be all of the Red Sox season. And in my incredibly biased opinion the Sox have a better team than the Yankees this season. While I will admit that Texiera is exactly the type of player I would like to build a team around, not signing him isn't as big a deal to me as some other people. Take it or leave it.
